engine DRIVING INNOVATION

Imagine for a moment that your PC is akin to a sprawling medieval castle. And it’s your job to guard it. Sound daunting?

Let’s suppose that it is not only your job

to protect the castle, but also all of the

possessions within. Furthermore, you must

guard the entire kingdom from a possible

invasion by a rogue army from a distant

land, or from a troupe of bandits roaming the

edge of the forest. And then there could be

a sneak attack from a disgruntled dungeon

worker on the inside.

Protecting your castle and its critical assets would require some distinct planning and vigilance–and the best set of tools available. Well, the same can be said for protecting your PCs and notebooks.

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves... or Hackers, Viruses, and Compliance

Security issues are an ever-evolving hot topic for small-and-medium-sized businesses as well as larger enterprises. Companies are evaluating their current data security policies as they encounter rising concerns about identity theft, hackers stealing network data, viruses crippling multiple systems, and data loss from missing hardware. With the rise of wireless networks and VPNs, companies must also ensure that their communications are protected and remain confi dential.

In addition, the need to better manage and guard data stored and accessed through PCs has never been greater, due to strict government compliance regulations including Sarbanes-Oxley and HIPAA. Failure to protect and retain mission-critical data could be costly and result in devastating legal consequences.

Building the MoatBusinesses want to know that the data on

their systems is secure, especially as networks become continually interconnected and more users become wireless warriors. IT professionals are considering a host of new best practices that include strong passwords, encryption for wired and wireless networks, embedded security systems, biometric fi ngerprint readers, and security software.

Lenovo is at the forefront of the PC-security movement, helping businesses to better manage and protect company and customer data with their ThinkVantage Technologies. Thinkpad® notebooks and ThinkCentre® desktops utilize the ThinkVantage Client Security Solution 6.0 for a hardware and software combination that creates the most secure industry-standard PCs. They also offer an Integrated Fingerprint Reader to add extra security to your system.

The Client Security Solution helps you create and manage hardware and software security so you can maximize your productivity while ultimately lowering your total cost of ownership per system.

Raise the Drawbridge! Drop the Gate! The ThinkVantage Client Security Solution

includes an integrated security chip and downloadable software. This multi-combination vault provides robust hardware and software that enforces Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to verify the authenticity of users accessing a system. The Client Security Solution complies with the stringent security standards issued by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG)–the benchmark organization that determines data protection criteria. In fact, the Client Security Solution was the fi rst PC hardware implementation to meet TCG standards.

7engine DRIVING INNOVATION

FALL 2005

“The integrated security chip is a separate entity

from the operating system and consists of an embedded cryptographic microprocessor that secures data, communications, and digital identity.

A passphrase and/or fi ngerprint authenticates users and grants them access to mission-critical data. Even if your notebook is stolen, only you as the verifi ed notebook user can unlock encrypted data, guaranteeing a higher level of data security.

Open Sesame, Open Says MeOne of the highlights of the ThinkVantage

Client Security Solution is the Password Manager. How many user names and passwords do you currently use for all of your log-ons and confi dential data transactions? Just trying to remember your ATM pin and social security number is enough, never mind the myriad user names and passwords for system and online access.

The Password Manager recognizes that users would prefer one easy-to-remember strong password to replace multiple user IDs, Microsoft® Windows® passwords, common form-entries, and Internet log-ons. You’re more likely to mentally keep track of one password, and less likely to foolishly write it down and keep it out in the open by your computer.

This one password can be a single passphrase, a fi ngerprint, or a smart card. Passphrases are saved, managed, and encrypted through the integrated security chip. Administrators can determine the length of strong passphrases, set expiration dates, and export encrypted password information for increased security.

Security You Can Put Your Finger OnThe Password Manager gives you the option to

use biometric technology in the form of fi ngerprint recognition to provide identifi cation and entry into your PC. Select ThinkPad notebooks offer an Integrated Fingerprint Reader located right on the palm rest. First you register your fi ngerprint as an ID by swiping your fi nger so that the reader constructs “snapshots” of your unique fi ngerprint. Through capacitive sensing, a template emerges based on variations in the electrical properties found in the living layer of your skin. Once the print is stored, future swipes are compared and matched using an algorithm that can identify ridge patterns in your fi ngerprint.

The Integrated Fingerprint Reader provides a clear advantage by working with the Password Manager to replace your other passwords. Now there are no more calls to the help desk because you forgot a password or typed it incorrectly and got locked out of your system. And because a fi ngerprint is unique to only one person, it cannot be lost or shared.

Best Coat of Armor for Your BusinessThankfully, you don’t actually have to guard an

entire castle. But you do have to guard your network and individual systems. Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies provide superior data protection–the best possible coat of armor for your business. ThinkVantage Technologies help you to tailor a security plan with options and possibilities that meet the specifi c needs of how you use your notebooks and PCs. By actively investing in client security now, you can minimize the risk of data loss and theft–ensuring maximized future productivity.

A mid-sized, family owned and operated company, Kichler Lighting has transitioned to a more mobile computing environment, increasing its end-user productivity, while bringing a new set of challenges in data and hardware protection, deployment, and technical support. With the lifecycle of the PC lengthening and management of the PC environment becoming more complex, the costs and challenges associated with PC lifecycle management increase. Utilizing the full suite of ThinkVantage Technologies, Kichler is realizing both cost savings and an improved user experience across the full lifecycle of the PC.

“Kichler is in the midst of a large technology initiative to increase the mobility and productivity of our employees,” said John Schindler, CIO of Kichler. “The ThinkVantage Technologies that we implemented address every challenge that comes with a large PC deployment, something that the other commodity-based vendors were not able to offer. These tools from Lenovo have helped improve the overall reliability of our IT operating environment, allowing us to be more effi cient and cost effective.”

Lenovo Lights the Path for DeploymentWhen deciding to upgrade and refresh its

PC environment, Kichler chose tools that would ease the burden of image building, system migration, and data disposal. By deploying ImageUltra Builder, a set of tools that allows users to consolidate the image and migration process into one update, Kichler has been able to bring its image-building process back in-house, reducing the cost by approximately 75 percent. Kichler anticipates further time-savings throughout the lifecycle of the PC by eliminating the requirement to completely rebuild an image based on a new PC or change in confi guration.

As old PCs are retired, Kichler no longer has to use a manual, low-level format to remove hard drive data before recycling the PCs. By deploying ThinkVantage Technologies, such as System Migration Assistant and Secure Data Disposal, Kichler decreased the amount of staff time required to migrate and dispose of important data by 50 percent.

Lenovo Leaves the Light On—All SecureWith a large number of mobile workers, Kichler

required a vendor with proven data-protection and recovery solutions. Each Lenovo PC deployed by Kichler includes the ThinkVantage Client Security Solution (formerly the Embedded Security Subsystem), Rescue and Recovery™, and Active Protection System, each helping Kichler guarantee the safety of its data.

Kichler utilizes the Client Security Solution to secure its proprietary data through fi le and folder encryption, secure log-on, and password protection. The deployment of ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre desktops with the Client Security Solution allows Kichler to replace the company’s use of RSA secure ID cards, providing additional savings.

Before utilizing Rescue and Recovery, a suite of self-recovery tools, Kichler would incur courier charges and a three- to four-hour delay when a fi le needed to be restored from an off-site backup tape. On an annual basis, Rescue and Recovery will save Kichler an average of $26 per installed PC in retrieval charges each time a user needs to have a fi le restored.

About Kichler LightingToday, Kichler Lighting is the leading decorative

lighting fi xture company in the world. 11engine DRIVING INNOVATION

FALL 2005

The tip of the iceberg. That’s the initial

price of a PC relative to what it will actually

cost your business over the PC’s lifetime

(known as Total Cost of Ownership or

TCO). But what will that actual cost be

and what kind of control do you have over

it? Well, that depends on which PC you

decide to buy and, more importantly, why.

By many industry estimates, the purchase cost of a business PC accounts for a mere 20 percent of the total cost of operating it. That means 80 percent of TCO consists of variable costs, meaning you must navigate through a lot of troubled waters.

That’s why basing a buying decision on price alone is like the First Mate of the Titanic proclaim-ing, “Captain, beware of the ice cube ahead.” What looks manageable—or even appealing—at the outset can become overwhelming in the end. You have to look below the surface.

Deployment CostsConsider the complexity of image building and

maintenance, including applications, operating systems, hardware platforms, and multiple languages.

Connection CostsConsider all the help desk calls spawned

by off-site connectivity problems and managing personal settings or Windows® property pages.

Protection CostsConsider the undeniable reality that securing

your data is diffi cult. Hackers want your sensitive information. Notebooks are dropped or stolen, often without backup. Password resets drain IT staff resources.

* Based on a three-year product lifecycle.

Support CostsConsider the diffi culties in tracking and managing

hardware and software, especially for remote users. Worms and viruses, as well as the installation of new software and updates, can be extremely costly.

Disposal CostsConsider the business concerns associated with

retiring your hardware. Are you losing sensitive corporate information? Are you conforming with data-disposal standards—and at what cost?

ThinkVantage™ Technologies Reduce TCO—and Save Your Ship

Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies are d esigned to provide numerous cost savings throughout the PC lifecycle, from deployment to disposal, resulting in a dramatic reduction in TCO .

When shopping for PCs, consider the price. But, more importantly, consider value over the long voyage that your PCs must make. With ThinkVantage Technologies on board, you’ll chart a steadier course and avoid sinking in costs.

“Our computing needs extend beyond simply word processing and maintaining databases. Lenovo’s ThinkVantage Technologies, such as Rescue and Recovery and Access Connections, help to improve employee productivity and make our operations more effi cient and secure. Other vendors we have worked with don’t offer the functionality, reliability and long-term return on investment of ThinkPad notebooks and ThinkCentre® desktops.”

FALL 2005

The More Things Change…Technology has evolved as humans have evolved, shifting from nomadic hunter-gatherer societies to living

in settled communities. The technology our ancestors invented and perfected made it easier for us to stay in one place: plows for producing more food on farms, clay jars to store food for longer periods of time, woven cloth to keep people warm as they spent entire winters in colder climates.

In contrast, these days, technology is keeping us on the move! The products that consumers have been snapping up recently—iPods, laptops, wireless cards, cell phones, lightweight digital cameras—are all mobile devices. Where once we sat in our offices every day, doing sedentary work, now business is evolving and many of us have been launched back into a traveling lifestyle. Our jobs ask us to perform the same duties on the road as we would in the office. As societies become more and more advanced, we seem to be shifting back to our nomadic roots—but this time around, we’re doing it right.

Successful Nomads, Then and NowAs Diamond notes, prehistoric nomads could not possibly carry pottery and printing presses with them from

camp to camp: the successful nomad traveled light. Breakable belongings were out of the question: no one could afford to spend time repairing equipment when there was traveling to be done. Communication between camps and different groups was nearly impossible and largely unnecessary. Obviously, our priorities have changed since then, and so has our technology. What do we need to be successful nomads now?

A Return

From the seminal best-seller Guns, Germs, and Steel, written by historian, anthropologist,

and UCLA professor Jared Diamond: “Nomadic hunter-gatherers are limited to technology

that can be carried. If you move often and lack vehicles or draft animals, you confine your

possessions to babies, weapons, and a bare minimum of other absolute necessities small

enough to carry. You can’t be burdened with pottery and printing presses as you shift camp.”

FALL 2005

Perhaps the most important aspect OF TRUE MOBILITY is connectivity.

15engine DRIVING INNOVATION

Continued from page 13

Today’s mobile business demands fl exibility, connectivity, protection, and independence. We’ve evolved to the point where these qualities are second nature to us —but what about our equipment? Enter Lenovo. ThinkVantage™ technology from Lenovo helps in every aspect of our modern nomadic workday, keeping us fl exible, connected, protected, and independent.

Where Does a 2.7-Pound Notebook Sit?Anywhere it wants! Flexibility is a key part of

Lenovo’s ThinkVantage design elements. Certain series of ThinkPad® notebooks start at only 2.7 pounds, giving you the freedom to take your work anywhere, easily. With at least two USB 2.0 ports standard on all ThinkPad models, your notebook will be ready for presentations, printing, and anything else you can throw at it.

What happens to the critical project you have to fi nish on your overnight fl ight when the cabin lights are dimmed? The ThinkPad stays fl exible with its ThinkLight keyboard light. Located on the top edge of the display, this tiny LED lights up your keyboard, enabling you to keep working in low-light conditions.

Staying in Touch With the TribePerhaps the most important aspect of true

mobility is connectivity. Staying connected to your home base, to your co-workers who are also out in the fi eld, to your offi ces in other cities or countries, to your network anywhere in the world, is crucial to maintaining your successful nomad status. Welcome to Lenovo ThinkVantage Access Connections technology.

Getting connected to the Internet and to your company’s network can present problems even when you’re in-offi ce. Connecting from the airport, your hotel, or another company’s headquarters can be hairy at best. This is where ThinkVantage Access Connections helps: its connectivity solutions go far beyond those provided by the operating system of your ThinkPad.

Access Connections offers location profi les for all the places you can be expected to work: on an Ethernet connection in the offi ce, wirelessly in a hotel room, on home-offi ce Ethernet, or a wireless LAN when you’re traveling. Without this feature, you would need to open many different program interfaces to change your system settings for each

location. That could include opening and confi guring as many as four or fi ve properties menus and setup tools! With Access Connections, all of these changes are made through one user-friendly interface. It guides you through a step-by-step process that leaves little question as to what to do next. Save network settings and different security protocols, as well as default printers, location by location.

Access Connections also fi nds new wireless networks that your ThinkPad can join. Just click, and create a new profi le for a wireless hotspot. Now you can jump online quickly in an airport lounge, or a coffee shop. And don’t worry about your confi dential work information leaking: Access Connections can confi gure your new profi le to include Virtual Private Network (VPN) settings.

After you save the basic settings for your various profi les, Access Connections helps you stay connected by: automatically managing your basic network connections, reassigning the Microsoft® Windows® default printer to match your location, and adjusting your network confi guration to match the IT needs of each location. It knows where and when you need to use a VPN, or any other application, where and when you need fi le and printer sharing, Internet sharing and your Internet connection fi rewall enabled or disabled, and where and when you need a proxy server for browsing.

Once your profi les are created, getting connected is simply a matter of selecting a profi le and letting Access Connections do the rest. Even when you move between a WLAN and a wired LAN, Access Connections is smart enough to make the appropriate connection. Access Connections takes the hassle out of getting connected, whether you’re an individual PC user or a network administrator.

Give IT a Rest!If your IT support staff is constantly on the

phone with mobile users who are trying to fi gure out how to change their IP settings or defi ne their default printer, your help desk resources become drastically depleted. You already know that Access Connections gives nomadic workers location-specifi c profi les that can be saved and recalled at any time—but it’s also designed for easy administration by IT staff. A network administrator can build unique

connectivity profi les for any location (home, offi ce, travel), for any network adapter (WLAN, WAN, Ethernet, and Bluetooth wireless), and in any combination. These profi les can then be remotely deployed, greatly simplifying the task. Right from your desk, you can deliver Access Connections wireless settings and profi le updates to ThinkPad notebooks all over the company.

ThinkVantage Access Connections works with Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 and is conveniently installed on all new ThinkPad notebooks.

An Airbag for Your NotebookTo keep up with the nomadic lifestyle, your gear

needs to be virtually indestructible. Although the means of transportation have improved since prehistoric times, any time you bring your modern-day nomad equipment with you on the road, you run the risk that it will break. You can afford to have your notebook ruined by a fall or jolt before a crucial presentation as much as our wandering ancestors could afford to hunt an irritated buffalo with broken spears. What good is taking your notebook on the road with you if you can never use it for fear of damaging it?

ThinkVantage technology features an Active Protection System (APS), available on many ThinkPad notebooks. Employing airbag-like technology to protect the hard drive, APS is invaluable for travel. The system features an integrated motion sensor that continuously monitors the movement of the notebook. If a sudden change in motion (such as a steep slide off a tray table) is detected by the APS, it temporarily stops the hard drive to protect it from a potential crash.

The APS uses a combination of hardware and software components to protect your ThinkPad. The hardware component is a type of motion detector called an accelerometer, embedded in the motherboard to continually sense system orientation and movement. The software component receives and interprets signals from the accelerometer. It’s smart

enough to distinguish between potentially harmful movements (your notebook to the fl oor, for example), and repetitive motion (such as the vibration from a train or airplane), and to notify the hard drive to stop when a possibly damaging event is predicted.

The APS can be customized to change enablement and sensitivity settings. It provides up to four times greater impact protection than systems that do not have it, and helps reduce downtime and support costs.

Rescuing YourselfNo modern-day nomad wants to have to call in

to the offi ce every fi ve minutes when something goes wrong. Our ancestors certainly couldn’t rely on their own IT department if their equipment needed repairs. ThinkVantage technology makes it easier for you to troubleshoot problems with your ThinkPad, independently. ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery™ is a one-button solution that includes a set of tools to diagnose the issue, get help, and recover from a software crash, even if your primary operating system refuses to boot. Rescue and Recovery can help you with anything from complete software failure to restoring corrupted or deleted fi les. Reduce the time spent calling the help desk with easily accessible diagnostic tools. Fix it yourself—or instantly view key system information to help speed up support calls, if they’re necessary. Rescue and Recovery also provides a Web browser to help you access online support resources, even if your OS isn’t booting.

Age of the e-NomadAs mobile technology improves, it’s getting

easier and easier to take our gear with us wherever we go. Instead of leaving the printing presses and pottery at home, we’ve got them packed away in our notebook bags and briefcases. Lenovo ThinkVantage technologies celebrate the return to a nomadic lifestyle, and offer you all the tools you need to stay productive, protected, and successful on the road.

Before becoming a ThinkPad series notebook customer in 2004, Monumental Life found that it was repairing more than 35 computer systems a day. After researching available computer products, Monumental Life decided to replace the computers it had with ThinkPad notebooks, known for their rugged reliability. After implementing the change throughout their sizeable sales force, the company was pleased to discover that computer repairs dropped to three per day, while help desk calls decreased by 1,000 per month.

“Because our agents work on commission, it is very important that they have reliable IT tools that allow them to do their jobs in the fi eld,” said Sandy Campbell, Assistant Vice President, Technology & Training Support, Monumental Life. “Switching to ThinkPad notebooks promised to reduce our total cost of ownership and so far, we are realizing the promised savings. And, with features like Active Protection System for hard drive protection, our agents can even accidentally drop their notebooks without a problem.”

Headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, Monumental Life is one of the few life and supplemental health insurance providers today with agents who service policyholders and prospects in their homes, neighborhoods, and places of business. This large sales force requires a powerful offi ce-on-the-go that can answer both the need for mobility and the need to

safeguard sensitive client information. With ThinkPad notebooks, they found reliable computers with fl exible, high-quality technology for customer insurance and fi nancial security needs.

With nearly 3,000 mobile insurance agents, the biggest challenge we face is hardware reliability,” said Campbell. “Using ThinkPad notebooks, we have been able to cut failure rates by more than half and greatly reduce our total cost of ownership. For us, hardware reliability means greater productivity, greater success for our agents in the fi eld and more satisfi ed customers. Plus, with ThinkPad notebooks we can feel confi dent that our customers’ data is secure.”

WIRE(LESS)While wireless technology has existed for years,

it’s only recently that the industry has resolved some of the issues preventing its widespread adoption, especially with regard to wireless PC networks. (Different standards, low bandwidth, and high infrastructure and service cost have restricted wireless technology in the past.) Despite the relative newness of the technology, its popularity is fast growing; according to the Wireless LAN Association, the industry will likely grow to $5.2 billion by the end of this year. For businesses, the benefi ts are legion, including:

Easy installationRemember the last time your offi ce was

rewired? It was probably an invasive, labor-intensive mess that involved torn-apart walls, unattractive raceways, and disrupted work. Wireless delivers LAN connectivity to your entire offi ce without complicated cable installation.

Mobility Every employee on a wireless network

can have instant access to real-time information virtually anywhere within a location confi gured for wireless technology.

Flexibility, ScalabilityHire fi fty temporary employees, move

a department to a new physical location, expand or consolidate your workgroup—and easily reconfi gure your wireless LAN systems to meet the changing demands.

Lower TCOLong-term cost benefi ts in rapidly changing

environments can more than make up for the slightly higher purchase cost of wireless LAN equipment.

So How Does it Work?Wireless local area networks (WLANs) use radio

waves, instead of cables or any other type of physical connection, to communicate between two points. Typically, a wireless access point (AP) or gateway connects wireless users to the wired network with regular Ethernet cable. You’re able to access your network by using a wireless LAN adapter to communicate with the AP or gateway. Your WLAN adapter could either be in the form of a PC card, or integrated into your notebook, as it is in most ThinkPad® models.

Standards created by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) designate wireless technology into three categories: 802.11b, 802.11a, and 802.11g.

802.11b supports bandwidth up to 11Mbps. Operating in an unregulated frequency, 802.11b gear can incur interference from microwave ovens, cordless phones, and other appliances using the same 2.4GHz range. Install your 802.11b equipment a good distance from your appliances, and the interference can be avoided.

802.11a supports bandwidth up to 54Mbps and operates in the regulated 5GHz range. Compared to 802.11b, this higher frequency limits the range of 802.11a, and keeps its signals from penetrating walls and other obstructions. Because 802.11a and 802.11b use different frequencies, the two technologies are incompatible with each other.

In 2002 and 2003, WLAN products began supporting a new standard. 802.11g attempts to combine the best of both 802.11a and 802.11b. It supports bandwidth up to 54Mbps, and uses the 2.4GHz frequency for greater range. 802.11g is backward-compatible with 802.11b, which means that 802.11g access points will work with 802.11b wireless network adapters and vice versa.

If your business relies on a mobile staff, wireless connectivity is the right decision for you. You can depend on Lenovo and ThinkVantage™ technology for technical expertise, and the best in wireless.

WIRE(LESS(LESS( )LESS)LESSThrough the

The Right Tools for The JobThinkPad® notebooks and ThinkCentre®

desktops take the tedium out of system migration by offering a complete set of tools to get the job done faster. Comprised of System Migration Assistant, ImageUltra Builder, Software Delivery Assistant, and other key ThinkVantage™ technologies, this purpose-built toolset, along with some careful planning on your part, can dramatically reduce the cost and complexity of any migration, whether it’s a single system or thousands of machines around the world.

An Ounce of Planning...Every successful system migration starts with a

step back. In his May 2005 article How to Migrate to a new PC (PC Magazine), John Clyman, President of the technology consulting fi rm Narrative Logic LLC, urges IT professionals to establish a migration strategy and add a few preliminary steps before attempting to transfer any fi les from an old PC to a new one.

“First, decide how you’re going to transfer data from one system to another. Your options generally include a standard network connection or shared folders, some other physical direct connection, or removable media. Next, make a list of all the users who have accounts on your old machine, if it’s set up for multiple users. Migration will go most smoothly if you create identical individual user accounts on the new machine.”

Clyman goes on to say that you should, “ensure that your systems have all the latest security fi xes and patches. Update your antivirus software and run a complete scan of both machines, to prevent transferring an undetected infection from your old system to the new one.” He recommends running

an antispyware program as well, but cautions against running real-time scan engines, as they may interfere with the migration process. Also, disconnect both machines from the Internet to avoid attacks during the transfer.

The countdown is on, but you still have one fi nal bit of prep work before you launch your migration. If you have not already done so, run a data backup of your old system. Should something go wrong during migration, this backup may be your only means of restoring critical information.

All Systems GoWith all preparations complete, you are face

to face with the moment IT professionals have been taught to dread, the migration. But you’re not worried. You have PCs equipped with System Migration Assistant (SMA).

Patricia Fusco, Managing Editor of Small Business Computing, describes System Migration Assistant as making, “light work of migrating the old computer’s data and settings to a new computer or operating system. By duplicating the source system on a single fi le, the tool enables users to easily transfer specifi c data and settings for

System Migration Assistant (SMA) creates a snapshot of your existing system environment (source), which it uses as a blueprint to duplicate that environment on a new PC (target). The source and target PCs can be in different physical locations and even in different time zones. SMA can also be used to backup or restore settings and fi les by making the source and target the same system.

SMA migrates your work environment in two phases: the capture phase and the apply phase.

In the capture phase, the following items can be selected and copied from the source system to an SMA profi le.

• Desktop settings • Application settings• Printer settings • Files and folders• Network settings • OS user profi les

During the apply phase, SMA applies the profi le to the target system. You can choose to apply the entire profi le or specify the components of the profi le you want to apply.

SMA can be run from the graphical user interface or from a command-line prompt.

25engine DRIVING INNOVATION

FALL 2005

For fi ve years in a row, Babson College has deployed ThinkPad notebooks throughout its campus to enhance innovative learning experiences and increase student productivity. With the help of System Migration Assistant, a ThinkVantage Technology that enables users to easily transfer system and network settings between PCs, Babson has reduced the time needed to migrate data by 66 percent. The result is decreased PC downtime and improved student access to information.

Babson promotes the role technology plays in enhanced teaching and learning methods through its College Technology Initiative. This program provides every incoming freshman with a wireless-enabled ThinkPad notebook and includes a ThinkPad refresh at the beginning of their junior year. By using System Migration Assistant, Babson enables approximately 450 juniors each year to quickly transfer the data contained on their ThinkPad notebooks themselves, without requiring IT assistance.

“Through the College Technology Initiative, Babson puts powerful tools in the hands of our students, empowering them with greater access to information and advanced learning opportunities,”

says Dan Tonelli, director of IT operations at Babson College. “Using ThinkPad notebooks, our students are not burdened with PC downtime or technology hiccups since the tools to remain productive are always available at their fi ngertips. System Migration Assistant, in particular, has been critical in supporting a smooth transition of data and information from PC to PC, while helping the college reduce costs and preserve its IT resources for other priorities.”

Babson students also benefi t from the other innovative ThinkVantage Technologies on their ThinkPad notebooks. These include Access Connections, a utility that allows users to easily switch connectivity among multiple wireless and wired network settings; Rescue and Recovery™, a one-button recovery solution that helps protect against data loss from a system software failure; and the Active Protection System, an integrated motion sensor that arms notebooks with hard-disk crash protection in case of a fall.

Complementing the ThinkPad notebooks are the ThinkCentre desktops used by faculty, staff, and in campus computer labs. Babson is planning a refresh of all desktop PCs this year.

Babson College Gets an A+ by Reducing Data-Transfer Time by Two-thirds

Babson College, located in Wellesley, Mass., is recognized internationally as a leader in entrepreneurial management education. Babson grants BS degrees through its innovative undergraduate program, and grants MBA and custom MS and MBA degrees through the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College. Babson Executive Education offers executive development programs to experienced managers worldwide. For more information, please visit www.babson.edu.

applications, printers, network connections, and personal preferences.”

Sound simple? It is. System Migration Assistant transforms a once tedious and error-prone undertaking into a low-cost, push-button task. SMA automatically searches out and consolidates desktop fi les, user profi les, and hard-to-fi nd Windows® application and registry settings into a single source fi le. This fi le can then be copied in part or whole to one or multiple new systems, greatly accelerating the migration process and subsequently reducing downtime and IT staff-related expenses.

Testing, Testing—1, 2, 3…All the time you saved using SMA creates the

perfect opportunity to test your newly migrated data. As a fi nal word to the wise in How to Migrate to a New PC, John Clyman suggests all systems be thoroughly checked over before deployment.

“Once you’ve completed the migration, check your new PC to make sure the migration worked as expected. No migration program is perfect, and you’ll likely fi nd a few gaps in coverage.”

This post-migration wrap-up is also a good time to run the fi rst backup of your new systems. Just make sure you don’t copy over the backup of your old systems. It is best to hold onto this data until your new systems have passed more extensive real-world testing.

You Made itAnd you didn’t have to stare down a single lion

or outrun a single cheetah. Of course, if you don’t fi nd smooth upgrades and reliable daily operation as stimulating as the hectic migrations of the past, you can always join the wildebeests. They’re on the move every May.

FALL 2005

ENG1005 Page 32 00/00/05

BBased on his evaluation testing, Steve chose

to upgrade Saint Leo’s entire mobile PC fl eet to ThinkPads®. “We went with the ThinkPads because they offered all the stability we were looking for, integrated easily into our network, and because Kristy was able to get them for us at a great price, with all the extra services we needed.”

“This is one of the big advantages of working with GovConnection. Their unique value-added service offerings gave us a more complete solution than Lenovo could offer, greatly lowered implementation costs, and made the deployment easy for a staff with limited resources.”

Saint Leo employed several services sold under the exclusive ServiceConnection brand, including custom notebook confi guration with standardized hard drive images for all machines, asset tagging and custom labeling for each notebook box, as well as equipment leasing and overnight delivery.

“GovConnection saved us a ton of time during the distribution phase by pulling the MAC address and serial number from each notebook and putting a label with that information on the outside of each box,” says Burrell. “We were able to move students through the line and get them their new systems in under fi ve minutes. We cranked them through. It was beautiful.”

GovConnection further sped up the distribution process by removing documentation, CDs, and system accessories that Saint Leo wanted to retain control of and have ready when returning the ThinkPads at lease end. “We distribute notebooks to more than 1000 resident students,” says Steve. “We also provide ThinkPad systems for our faculty and university executives. Rolling out new machines to every one of these users without the help of GovConnection would have put unbearable strain and expense on our IT staff.”

Kristy continues to work closely with Steve, building a strong, ongoing relationship with Saint Leo. Recently, this grew to include an e-procurement partnership. Now students, faculty, and staff can purchase specially priced, pre-qualifi ed systems, software, and accessories online through GovConnection. Kristy works closely with Saint Leo’s accounts payable and procurement offi ces to deliver a smooth, automated buying experience and a greater product depth than the university could offer on its own.

When Saint Leo University needed to upgrade and distribute over 1000 notebook

computers, they called GovConnection, a subsidiary of PC Connection, Inc.

Saint Leo University CIO, Steve Burrell, faced an aging fl eet of Apple® notebooks

and a great deal of uncertainty about the direction in which he wanted to upgrade,

when he called his GovConnection Business Development Manager, Kristy Rieth. “Kristy

offered several possible upgrade solutions and even provided evaluation units for us to

test software images and hardware compatibility,” says Steve. “This was extraordinarily

helpful. My staff was able to test systems from multiple vendors in a real-world

environment and make the most educated decision possible.”PHOTOGRAPH BY FRED SMITH ASSOCIATES
