FRIDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2019 | TERM 3 | WEEK 9

Principal’s Message This will be the last newsletter for term 3, it only seems like yesterday that we were beginning this term! It has been another very busy and productive term with great learning opportunities for all students. I would like to thank all of the students at Lennox Head Public School for their continued excellent behaviour, inclusiveness and adhering continually to our Three Key Values of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity. I continue to receive emails and phone calls from places that we have visited on excursions or on camps and everyone praises your excellent contributions and manners. This is a testament to the great work that all of the staff do here, and of course your parents. Well done everyone. Stage 3 Excursion to Lake Keepit A special thank you to all of the staff and students who travelled to Lake Keepit last week. From all reports you all had a fantastic time and came home with plenty of stories to share. I think it was an eye opener to many students as to how dry the countryside is as soon as you leave the coast. It certainly puts the drought into perspective. A special thanks to the staff who gave up their time for 24 hours a day over the week of the Stage 3 camp and a special mention to the teachers on the Year 5 bus who had to deal with a lot of travel sickness on the way back. This is never a pleasant job. Thank you! P&C Fundraiser – Colour Run The Colour Run information has been distributed to all students. Please ensure that you follow the instructions on the paperwork that came home last week and start collecting your sponsors now! Remember this is a fundraiser, so it would be fantastic if lots of money was raised by you all for the P&C which will enable the purchase of items for the school. More information regarding this will be sent out next week, this will include some paperwork that will require permission from parents to allow their child/children to participate on the day. Absences If your child is absent from school please wait for the text message to be sent to your phone after the classroom rolls are marked and reply to the message with the reason why your child is absent from school. We ask that you please don’t use School Stream to submit an absence as we then have to print these out which results in a lot of paper wastage. ‘Tell Them From Me’ Survey In case you missed it in the last newsletter this is the link for the ‘Tell Them From Me’ survey: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/9rnvp By completing this survey it helps us with future planning and also identifies areas in which we may need to improve. The survey is also completely anonymous. 2020 Enrolments If you are enrolling for Kindergarten at Lennox Head Public School in 2020 we need your enrolment forms before the end of this term. Orientations begin on Tuesday 29 October next term. If you are aware that you are leaving the school at the end of the year, please contact the office and let us know.

NAPLAN Results have been distributed to all parents. Our Year 3 students were above the state average in every area that was tested. There were some very pleasing results and growth for many students. Our Year 5 students were above state average in reading and grammar and punctuation. They were comparable with state average in spelling and numeracy. Our Year 5 writing results were lower. However this was done online for the first time and we did have several glitches on this day and our students were not able to re sit this paper. This is currently an area being looked at by the NSW Department of Education. Remember each test is only one event and we need to look at various assessments to determine what each student is more accurately able to achieve. Any concerns regarding this please contact the school or your child's teacher. We hope that you all have a fantastic break over the school holidays and come back refreshed ready for the super busy times that always occur in term 4! Term 4 for all students and staff will commence on Monday 14 October. There is no Staff Development Day at the beginning of term 4. Have a safe and wonderful holiday, Deb Langfield Principal L.S.T.T. Concert Band Lennox Head P.S. Southern Cross P.S. Teven Tintenbar P.S

Semester 2 Fees Thank you to all who have paid fees, either as part payment or in full. Full payment fees were due Friday 13 September. Part payments can be made until 6 December. If you have not received your invoice or have any questions please contact Fiona Clarke [email protected] Performance Our next performance will be at Southern Cross Public School on Wednesday 25 September. Students need to be at Southern Cross Public School by 5.45pm. Notes about this performance have now been sent home, please see Miss Somerville if your child has misplaced their note. Rehearsals/Lessons There will be no Monday or Friday rehearsals in Week 10 of this term. Lessons will run as normal. Honour Students – Josie M, Fern K and Sammie D

Sport News 2019 Athletics Age Champions A huge congratulations to Neeve A, Isabella, Lillian B, Dylan W, Daniel S, Chad A and Leon K for your sporting achievements. Regional Interschool Snow Sports Championship In the first week of the July school holidays my brothers Banjo, Von and I travelled to Perisher Snow Resort to represent Lennox Head Public School in the Regional Interschool Snow Sports Championships. We all did very well. Banjo who is in Year 4 only missed out on making the Regional Team by one second in the Ski Cross. Von who is in Year 2, his times were super fast in the Ski Cross but he got disqualified for missing a gate. I have no doubt they will make the regional team next year! Amazingly I got a bronze medal in the Snowboard Cross. We all raced against the National Champions in our region so it was very tough as most of them live at the snow for the winter and as you know Lennox Head is a long way from the snow. On Monday 19 August I raced in the Amelia Mcguiness Time Trials and came 5th. The next day I raced in the NSW/QLD/ACT Snowboard Cross and knocked 5 seconds off my previous time which made me qualify for the State SSA team! On Saturday 7 September I competed in the Snowboard Cross in Mt Buller in Victoria for the Australian National Interschools Championships. It was a really fast course and numerous girls were eliminated in the qualifying stage by crashing. I qualified 11th to get into the final. The weather was quite bad for the final with wind, snow and low visibility, so it was more difficult, but it was better as I knew the course from the previous run. I was desperate to get in the top 10 and ended up coming 8th. My family was very excited and so was I. Written by Coco G in Year 6.

FRIDAY 20 SEPTEMBER 2019 | TERM 3 | WEEK 9

Be a fruit & veg superhero yourself!

Did you know only about 5% of NSW children eat enough vegetables? And the statistics are similar for adults. Our school has registered for Fruit & Veg Month – a fun and educational health promotion event that puts a positive focus on fruit and vegetables. To encourage our school families to eat more fruit and vegetables we will be sending home hints and tips over the month. Encourage your family to eat more fruit and vegetables by being a fruit & veg superhero:

Show your kids how often you eat fruit and veg – include them in all your meals and snacks too!

Talk with your kids about which fruit and veg are your favourites and why you think they are superheroes. Kids live in the moment so taste, texture, and superpowers like going fast and having super strength are what matters to them

Get your kids involved in meal planning and shopping. Put a focus on deciding which fruit and vegetables you will include in your meals and snacks*

*Cost or availability an issue? Frozen fruit and vegetables or canned vegetables (no added salt) or canned fruit (in natural juice) are great too! Use superhero tactics to up the fruit & veg at home!

Superheroes are persistent and never give up!

Despite setbacks, keep putting the fruit and veg on the table and in the lunchboxes

Some parents choose to hide fruit and veg in dishes. That can help but it is still important that kids learn to enjoy fruit and vegetables. So make sure you continue to put the fruit and vegetables out in full view as well

Don’t force your kids to eat fruit and vegetables but do give them lots of descriptive praise or non-food rewards for trying them. To keep with the superhero theme, you could chart how superpowered your family is – how many different fruit and veg did you try over a week?
