smiley facesThe secret to happy childrenWe all want our children to be happy. Read on and discover how you can turn your grumpy grouches into little rays of sunshine!

Lots of loveA child who feels loved unconditionally is more likely to be happy later on in life. Regularly telling your child you love them is a sure-fire way to make them feel secure and with feelings of security comes happiness. It also teaches them how to show love to others.

Buddy boostsPromote strong ties with family and friends. This will help your child feel connected and research shows children who are socially connected are likely to feel happier.

Practice makes perfectIf you really want to boost your child’s self-esteem, focus less on heaping praising on them all the time and more on providing them with opportunities to learn new skills. Acquiring new skills can really be a self-esteem builder. It can be difficult to watch our kids struggle but they will never know the thrill of mastering something unless we allow them to risk failure. Few skills are perfected on a first try. Children need to develop the can-do attitude that lets them approach future challenges with the zest and optimism that are central to a happy life.

Don’t try too hardIt probably sounds counter intuitive to modern parenting, but the best thing you can do for your child’s long-term happiness is to stop trying to keep her happy in the here and now. Recognise that you are not responsible for your child’s happiness, Parents who feel responsible for their kids’ emotions find it hard to let them experience anger, sadness, or frustration. We swoop in immediately to give them whatever we think will make them happy. Sadly children who don’t learn to deal with negative emotions are in danger of being crushed by them as adults. Once you accept that you can’t make your child feel happiness, or any other emotion for that matter, you’ll be more likely to step back and allow her to develop the coping skills she’ll need to bounce back from life’s setbacks.

Happy youChildren are like sponges, so our moods matter to them. Happy parents are more likely to have happy children whereas children of depressed parents suffer twice the average rate of depression. So the best thing you can do is attend to your own emotional wellbeing.

Page 9: Lemon Squeezy Magazine Issue 10

Lemon SQueezY 9

Out and aboutWhen a child gets lots of physical exercise, his brain releases feel-good chemicals, called endorphins, which contribute to a sense of wellbeing. Encourage your kids to head outdoors and have fun. Unstructured, child-directed play helps keep children fit, nurtures creativity, fosters independence and teaches social skills.

Stortford Music Festival’s 2011 theme, Stortfest in Wonderland,

promises to bring the weird and

wonderful world of Lewis Carroll’s topsy-turvy masterpiece to Bishop’s Stortford. There will be entertainment for all ages, making this year’s festival a true winner for the whole family. One of the highlights for the younger audience members will be Jan’s Van. Jan Edgecombe, will be visiting the festival with her van and once parked up, children and grown ups, are able to freely express with paint and chalk on the van. As well as painting, Jan will bring a maypole, juggling balls, dressing up outfits, and an array of outdoor games and crafts to keep you entertained.

The Children’s tent will include making Mad Hatter hats, puppets, lanterns, percussion instruments and Cheshire Cat masks culminating in an ‘Alice in WonderlandParade’ on Sunday afternoon. Local theatre group Actability will be providing drama workshops and there will be an African drumming and dancing workshop.Stortfest’s music lineup is impressive with confirmed headliners; The Boomtown Rats, Dodgy, The Selector, Hayseed Dixie and the Pink Floyd Dimension to name but a few. There will be plenty of food stands, a bar tent with an open stage and the ever popular chill-out tent returning as The Mad Hatters Tea Party, with cakes and hot drinks on sale. The festival will be entirely under cover. Come rain or shine, a fantastic time will be had by all. Tickets are a fraction of many larger festivals and for a limited time, early-bird bookings are being taken.

Make your own Easter eggs!Ingredients

◊ For the Easter egg: 500g milk chocolate, 1 oz butter, an egg mould.

◊ To decorate: 150g dark chocolate, 150g white chocolate, piping bags, a sheet of acetate.

How to:

1. Put the chocolate and the butter in a saucepan and melt.

2. Pour the mixture into your egg moulds – make sure you tip the mould so that the chocolate covers the whole surface and goes over the edges. Pour out any surplus chocolate.

3. Put in a cold place – but not the fridge as this can make it crack!

4. Once the chocolate has set – remove gently with a knife.

5. To stick the two halves, boil some water in a saucepan and quickly run the edges of the egg along the outside of the pan and weld.

6. Melt the dark and white chocolate in separate saucepans over a low heat and then transfer the liquid chocolate into paper piping bags. Note: this will be hot.

7. Pipe pattern motifs like butterflies or bunnies onto a sheet of acetate and place in the freezer to set.

8. Remove the chilled motifs from the freezer and using a hot knife, melt small areas on the surface of the large eggs and quickly stick the motifs in place.

Mum’s the wordHow to make Mummy happyWith Mother’s Day just around the corner, our little ones are busy gluing tissue paper daffodils to brightly coloured card and emptying their piggy banks to buy some chocolates. We’ve come up with some ideas for the family to make Mummy really happy. So leave this page open for all to see. You never know, a husband or a child might just read it!

Calling all Kids!If you are having trouble thinking of some Mother’s Day ideas, then read on and you’ll see that Mum doesn’t expect much, only to know that her children adore her. Remember, a little goes a long way.

You get what you deserveThink about what Mum really deserves and what she does for you. She spends her time being a cook, cleaner, laundry maid, taxi driver, nurse, teacher and secretary. And she does all this out of love! So walk up to Mum, give her a huge hug and say thank you!

It’s the thought that countsRather than last minute present buying, (We’re talking to you, Dad) take time to think about what Mum would really love. Anything you do or buy for her, she will appreciate more, if she knows you spent time pondering and planning.

Made with loveMums just adore anything home-made. Open up your craft cupboard and get

inspired. Whatever you create will make Mummy proud and before you know it, she’ll be showing her new work of art off to all the neighbours!

What a treat!A treat goes a long way. If you haven’t much money to spend but you want to do something special for Mum. Book up a treatment for her. She could get her nails done, have a massage or a facial. If you put one or two pounds towards it, we’re sure she’ll be so excited, she wont mind paying for the rest! Although we would recommend asking an adult’s permission before you do it! Try Tanning & Treatments on 07794 401657.

A way to her heartYou don’t have to be a chef to prepare an exquisite meal. Get some adult help and do something simple. You don’t even have to cook. Prepare a salad or make a sandwich. And if you haven’t learned how to make a

good cup of tea – now is your chance!

Make it sparkleMost Mummies hate having to do all the cleaning and love a little help from time to time. So don’t wait to be asked – just do it! Get out the polish or the vacuum

cleaner, make your bed or tidy your room and you’ll be in Mum’s good books all week!

Peace and quietThe greatest gift you can give your Mum

is time to relax. You could let

her have a little lie in. Why not rent

Why the Animals Came to TownInfantsMichael ForemanWalker Books£5.99 Paperback

This beautifully illustrated bedtime read is a powerful environmental plea from the

infamous Michael Foreman. Baboons and bison, bats, beavers and meerkats: animals from all over the world have to come to one little boy’s street. The nocturnal visit from a parade of dancing animals warns us all that the world we inhabit is in danger.

Muncle TroggJuniors Janet Foxley Chicken House £5.99 Paperback

Muncle Trogg is so small that he’s laughed at by the others for being human-sized. Fed up, he decides to take a look at the Smallings that he’s meant to look like. But what he discovers is very surprising! An affectionate and charming upside down fairytale, this is the magical story of the residents of Misty Mountain and the tiny giant who saves the day. Exciting and laugh-out-loud funny, and filled with joyful illustrations.

creative kidsSix ways with cotton woolGet wiggyCut out a wig shape from a paper bag. The bottom of the bag will become the top of the wig. Brush the glue on one section of the paper bag. Press cotton wool balls in rows to the glue to attach them to the bag. Glue and cover another section then another until the bag is completely covered by cotton wool. Allow the glue to totally dry. Your wooly wig is ready to wear.

Easter bunny earsCut out a strip of cardboard about 5cm wide by about 60cm long for a head band. Cut two ears out of cardboard each about 20cm long and 10cm wide. Cut out two smaller ears from pink paper. Glue the pink ears inside the white ears and then spread glue round the remaining white card and cover with cotton wool. Once dry glue the ears inside the head band. Tape the band to fit your head and cut off any excess.

Feeling sheepishTake five corks and colour them in with a black marker pen. Glue four of the corks to a toilet roll tube to make legs and leave to dry. Glue a pair of eyes to the fifth cork and put to one side. When the legs are dry cover the tube in glue and stick on the cotton wool balls. Take the cork with the eyes and dab on some glue. Stick the cork to the cotton wool balls at one end of the tube to make the head.

Green-haired hedgehogThis simple craft results in a live plant. Cut a raw potato in half. Cut out the inside and fill it with cotton wool. Dampen the cotton wool and sprinkle a bit of grass seed on top. In a few days you will have a green-haired hedgehog!

Top tiaraWith a royal wedding round the corner, this tiara will go down a treat. Flatten a large aluminium pie case and fold it in half. Open it up and punch holes on one side of the semi-circle. Place a ball of cotton wool in the centre of a small square of cellophane. Wrap it up and twist the tail tightly. Repeat until you have lots of jewels. Thread the tails of the jewels through the holes in the pie case. Once you’ve finished, fold the pie case back in half. Punch holes at each side and tie on a length of elastic.

Fairy garlandUsing a long piece of floss , bunch and roll three to four cotton balls loosely in glitter before stringing them 15cm apart. Hang along a windowsill as an enticing and sparkling garland to charm the wee fairy folk.

Bubbling beautyLava lamps are mesmerising to watch. Try this very simple experiment and make your own lava lamp without using heat or electricity. It’s a real beauty!

You will need:

A clear plastic bottle

Water

Vegetable oil

Food colouring

Anti-acid tablets

How to:1/4 fill your bottle with water then pour in the vegetable oil so that it fills up to 3cm from the top. Put in four drops of food colouring and watch as it settles onto a filmy layer on the water. Break up an anti-acid tablet and drop it into the bottle. The tablet sinks down to the bottom and starts to fizz. As it fizzes, the tablet breaks up the drops of food colouring and the water turns colour. The bubbles take water up with them into the oil and you start to see coloured bubbles floating around until the water sinks back down.Once the anti-acid tablet looses its effect, you can screw the lid on and keep it for another time. When you want another lava lamp display, take the lid off and pop another tablet in.

In a dark room, try shining a torch underneath the bottle, and get the effect of a real lava lamp without the heat!

How it works:Oil and water refuse to mix. Water is made up of millions and millions of tiny molecules, each with a positive charge on one end and a negative charge on the other. These molecules are called polar

molecules. The reason water always sticks together is because the positive charge of one molecule will attract the negative end of the molecule next to it. Oil is made up of non-polar molecules. The positive and negative charges are spread out more evenly and the water molecules cannot stick to them easily.Food colouring is water based, so will mix easily with the water but not the oil.Oil is less dense, so lighter that water, which is why it floats on top.The anti-acid tablet reacts with the water to make tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide gas. The bubbles attach themselves to the water and float to the surface. When the carbon dioxide bursts at the top, the water sinks back down.
