PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Diplomat built first nine-hole golf course in county

James T. DuBois (1851-1920) was a diplomat, consul-general, political liaison, author/journalist, minister to Colombia in 1911 and he built the first nine-hole golf course in Indian River County. He was a Fellsmere winter resident from 1913-1920. James T. DuBois was born at Great Bend (now Hallstead), Bradford County, Pennsylvania on April 17, 1851. In 1897, he served as consul-general at St. Gall Switzerland for four years. During this time, on July 2, 1900, he was invited by Count Zeppelin to be present at the trial ascent of his famous airship at Manzell, on Lake Constance in Switzerland. In 1912, DuBois served as the liaison between Colombia and the United States. As a result of his understanding and sympathy with the Colombians, he brought about better relations between the countries.

In 1913, James T. DuBois and his son Henry P. DuBois purchased land in Fellsmere and built one of the early extravagant homes called “Goldflet.” All homes in Fellsmere had a name. It was a tradition. On June 2, 1917, the Fellsmere Tribune announced a new book called “Galusha A. Grow, Father of the Homestead Law.” It is a biography about a man who was Speaker of the House under

Abraham Lincoln and a close friend of James T. DuBois. Grow believed firmly in “The right of all men to the soil is as sacred as their right to life itself.” Mr. Grow introduced the Homestead Bill in 1862. This bill provided millions of acres of land for people from 1862 until 1986. It was the beginning of the settlement of the West. James T. DuBois died in New York City on May 27, 1920, a month after he left his winter home in Fellsmere. Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the stock market to stabilize:

• Commercial air service returned to Vero Beach a little more than a month ago, and demand might be exceeding expectations. On two days (Dec. 24 and 27), Elite Airways needed a second jet – yes, a second jet – to transport passengers from Newark to Vero Beach. Then on Jan. 3, Elite needed a second jet to transport passengers from Vero Beach to Newark. “For Elite Airways’ first month in Vero Beach, they have knocked it out of the park,” said Eric Menger, manager of the Vero Beach Regional Airport. “Almost every flight has been full or close to full.” Elite has non-stop flights between Vero Beach and Newark every Thursday and Sunday. The 50-seat, CRJ-200 jets make the trip in less than 2.5 hours. “We have, in essence, created a new market of people who

might have not otherwise taken a trip to do business, see New York City, or see family or friends, but now can do so very conveniently and with little or no parking or automobile expense (at least on this end),” Menger said. “So far, so good!” You simply can’t beat the convenience.• Fodor’s Travel recently named Vero Beach as one of the “10 Under-the-Radar Florida Beach Towns to Visit This Winter.” Don’t know if it’s good or bad, but the places are truly “under the radar” – I recognized only two others on the list.• The state’s high school graduation rate of 77.8 percent is nothing to brag about, but at least it’s a 12-year high. Meanwhile, it’s hard to put a positive spin on Indian River County’s trend. Our graduation rate (75.7 percent) has dropped

three years in a row and is now below the state average.• “A Chorus Line” is in the middle of a successful run at Riverside Theatre. Did you know this is a return engagement for the play at Riverside? The first time was February 1994. By the way, the director of the current production, Mitzi Hamilton, was the inspiration for the character Val in the show.• Those driving down 58th Avenue may not be aware of the large chunks of land that have been cleared for housing developments. Just west of 58th Avenue, along 33rd Street, is for Harmony Reserve; just east of 58th Avenue, along 45th Street, is for what appears to be the expansion of Waterway Village. Here’s hoping 58th Avenue doesn’t become a clogged artery to State Road 60.• A rant against Corporate America’s dismissive attitude toward loyalty: The Lemmons have their cell-phone service through AT&T. A few weeks ago, I stopped at a Verizon store to check out its generous incentives for new customers – basically, it’s

$650 toward new iPhones. Happy with our current service, I returned to AT&T, explained I’m an existing customer, and asked if there’s any way it could come close to matching Verizon’s offer. “No,” the AT&T salesperson said. End of discussion. AT&T is offering a similar incentive, but only to new customers. I’m sure if we were a Verizon customer and asked them to match the AT&T incentive, the answer would be the same. To be continued … • Sometimes, all it takes is a hashtag on Twitter to make me laugh. (In this case, a “tweet” by Joshua Smerker, it was the second hashtag.) “#VeroBeach is getting a stand-alone @chikfila #bigtime” Um, OK. I remember how giddy people were when they heard Olive Garden was coming, so maybe I’m underestimating the giddiness potential of a stand-alone Chick-Fil-A.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Carl Miller knows an I-95 interchange at Oslo Road is inevitable. So, the best he can hope for is a delay in the project. Right now, the Florida Department of Transportation is estimating the project will cost $24.6 million. Right-of-way acquisitions could start as early as 2020. “Of course, you’re talking $45 (million) to $60 million before it’s completed,” Carl said. “From a taxpayers’ perspective, it doesn’t make any sense. “My feeling is, they’re 10 years too soon.” He predicts traffic will be very light when the interchange opens. “It really is a remote area of the county,” he said.

He knows the area very well. He lives at the Indian River Aerodrome, where 53 homes share a turf runway for airplanes. (Carl and his wife, Donna, have two planes – a 1941 Piper J-3 Cub and a 1964 Piper Twin Comanche. He uses the planes for his aerial photography business, Over Exposures.) So, how remote is it? There are no county utilities, no cable television and, as Carl joked, “we have great

difficulty in getting a pizza delivered.” Which, he insists, begs the question: “Is it the right time for this interchange?” He’s somewhat dismayed the board of directors at the Aerodrome – where homes range from $200,000 to $500,000 – chose not to take a stand on this issue. He says about 10 residents are “strongly opposed” to the interchange and another 20 are “mildly opposed.” Do you know anyone selling time (to delay the interchange)? Carl would like to buy 5 to 10 years.

Carl Miller

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

The warmest January on record in Vero Beach? It was 1947, with an average temperature of 69.8 degrees, followed by 1974 (69.6 degrees) and 1972 (68.8 degrees). The coolest January on record in Vero Beach? It was 1981, with an average temperature of 52.8 degrees, followed by 1977 (54.4 degrees) and 2003 (55.8 degrees).
