An international program held annually in North Battleford, Saskatchewan,

Summer School for the Solo Voice is a week long intensive study and performanceopportunity for singers, accompanists, teachers and choral conductors at beginner, intermediate and senior levels. It is a non-auditioned program open to participants aged eightand older, regardless of experience. For many adults and youth, this is their first time singingin public, while others have participated in music festivals for years, and yet others areteachers and university students pursuing a career in music.

Summer School for the Solo Voice is able to accommodate a wide range of ages and abilitiesby employing highly qualified instructors who excel both as teachers and as performers.Collectively these instructors offer three to eight classes simultaneously. Each participant isgiven personal choice of daily classes, enabling them to custom make their own program, specializing in the areas they find most interesting and useful.

Singers, accompanists, private and classroom teachers, as well as members of community, church and school choirs have all found this to be a valuable program. Often times familymembers attend together (children, parents and grandparents!). SSSV strives to buildconfidence and leadership skills in participants so they can continue participating in,supporting &/or facilitating the Arts upon returning to their respective communities throughoutthe province, country and abroad.

The primary function of Summer School for the Solo Voice is to culture and

enable the Arts in Saskatchewan, while its mandate has always been tooffer the highest level of instruction for the lowest possible cost so as toallow anyone who is interested, the ability to participate. A portion of thebudget is always allotted to help students at a financial disadvantage to attend. We believethat music should be available to everyone and work hard to create partnerships and buildcommunity through and for the learning and sharing of music.

Over the years Summer School for the Solo Voice has diversified to include: AdvancedSingers, Advanced Accompanists, Collaborative Arts, Piano Technique and Repertoire,Musical Theatre, Pedagogy, Speech Arts, Theory, Composition, Adult Beginner, ChoralConducting, Musical Theatre, Drama, Children and Jazz programs within the larger structure.Because of the expertise of the staff, students are able to choose classes that fit their age, ability and level of experience as well as specializing in an area of particular interest to them.

Saskatchewan, being wide spread and largely made up of smaller rural communities, has noone 'cultural hub"

that effectively serves all of its residents. We are fortunate to have largercentres that bring in clinicians for a day or two, but these workshops are by and large for aspecific group of students and not usually open to public participation. We are also fortunateto have had musical arts summer programs in the past, many of which are no longerfunctioning, often times due to financial constraints. SSSV has continued to grow and flourishin North Battleford over the past 20 years.

Page 16: LEISURE SERVICES...10 North Battleford Table Tennis Club Inc - Equipment $ 2,110.00 $ 2,106.69 $ 2,106.69 Yes Yes 28-May-18 11 Battle River Treaty 6 Health Centre - Pancake Breakfast

Saskatchewan is rich with talent and potential in the Performing Arts.Unfortunately its distance from bigger centres hinders access to teachers of the calibreSummer School for the Solo Voice provides and the Advanced Singers program offers, leaving many of our artists at a disadvantage. Summer School for the Solo Voice works tolevel that, and the inclusion of the many different programs within the school ensures a placefor singers, teachers, conductors, accompanists and speech artists of all levels in ourcommunity and province.

To the best of my knowledge, no other such program exists. To quote Laurence Ewashko, a

highly respected international conductor, singer and master teacher, "I don't think anythinglike this exists anywhere else in the world...It is a really unique and wonderful experience forthese people who are creating community - community which is filled with joy, filled with loveand listening and watching each other...". (News Optimist)

SSSV goes to great lengths to accommodate participants with mental and physicalchallenges, further affirming our commitment to the goal of music for all.

The age group that benefits from this program ranges from 8 years to 80+ (some of ouroldest participants have been 78-81 year old grandparents attending and singing with theirgrandchildren). Singers, conductors, accompanists and teachers of all ages

and levels of experience will not only benefit from what they learn and theperformance opportunities they receive, but they will then take thisknowledge and boosted confidence back into their communities. Summer

School for the Solo Voice has proven to be a wonderful experience that boosts confidence,

hones abilities, teaches new skills and creates community leaders in the Arts.

While a significant number of our staff and students are from Saskatchewan, staff and

students come from all over Canada, the United States and abroad. We have had staff

members from Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, England and SouthAfrica as well as students from Saskatchewan

, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario,

Quebec, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, North Dakota, France, and Tokyo.

SSSV fosters the development and growth of musicians while raisingawareness of and appreciation for the Arts.

"

It's amazing, " he [Geoffrey Pratley, world renowned musician from the UK] says. "

You must surelythink you're in a big city like Calgary or Winnipeg. In a small place, to have all this lot? It's

marvellous, isn't it?" (News Optimist)

Part A) Replacement of Picnic Tables: the current tables are in need of replacement. The Chamber has repaired, resurfaced, etc., the current tables for a couple of decades, but their useful life is now over. (This is the request of the City of North Battleford)Part B) Repair/Replace a Water Line: under the parking lot on the property, a water lineis broken and when or if, the water is on, it leaks and is deteriorating the parking lot andsurrounding ground structures. It is the water line that provides water for use by thepublic in the outdoor picnic areas, as well as the watering systems in the park area. TheChamber has repaired the line twice (2 different spots) over the last couple of years,

butthe contractor has now said it requires replacing in full.Part C) Provision of services and supplies for supporting the public washroom facilities. 2outdoor washrooms are available for service to the public and their needs during usage inthe park area. The washrooms are available during regular work days. The supplies andprovision of services are to continue to offer the demanded services for public washroomfacilities.

There are several thousands of people who make use of the Rotary Park, stop in at theroadside attractions (RCMP statue and barbed wire bison), and make use of publicwashroom facilities, The demand for these services is non-stop and critical for families,

visitors and travellers.
