Traditional goat farm : “La Ferme du Brillat”

Children and adults will discover a farm which breeds dairy

goat whose milk is used by farmers to make some

delicious cheeses. From May to September, you can visit

the goat breeding and maybe try to milk by yourself goats

by hand on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6.00 p.m. (prior

cheese on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6.00 pm (prior booking

Animal park : “Héria”

An animal park designed for children! They can see farm animals, bisons, aurochs, Highland cattle, wolfhounds and birds of prey at close range in an exceptionally beautiful valley, the ‘Vallée du Hérisson. Traditional cow farm : « La Grange Marleille »

Children will discover a farm which breeds dairy cattle

whose milk is used by farmers to make some delicious

cheeses, yogurts and ice creams. From June to September,

you can watch the cows being milked in the fields on

Mondays and Thursdays at 5.30 p.m. (prior booking

required, admission free). Make sure you have appropriate

shoes for the 15-minute walk to the fields, especially in wet

weather.

The know-how workshop : « L’Atelier des savoir-faire »

In the heart of the Regional Natural Park of the Haut-Jura,

the Know-How Workshop shows you the Jura’s arts and

crafts. Thousands of objects show the know-how of wood

turners, spectacle makers, diamond cutters, and many other

craftsmen.

Let yourself be charmed by the unsuspected world of this

place where you will be able to watch films and temporary

exhibitions and to make the most of recreational areas.

Many activities are offered during school holidays and in

summer (prior booking required). Creative training courses

are also organized all the year round. Ask for the

programme !

Last but not least, a two-mile walk along “the know-how

footpath” in the middle of nature will enable you to see the

many works of our craftsmen. For further information about

the footpath, ask at the workshop.

Horn craft : Mr Muyard’s workshop

In his workshop which was awarded the Living Heritage

Company label, Michel Muyard, a master craftsman who

won the regional prize for arts and crafts in 2002, will

explain to you what his job as a horn carver consists in and

that two generations in the family worked in the same

trade before him. He will show you the various horns he

uses for his work (ox, buffalo, ram and goat horn) and the

many different objects he makes. When you see him at

work on his machines, you will understand better how he

carves and engraves all his objects. An unusual variety of

gifts and souvenirs is on sale in the shop.

If you go to his small workshop in Villards-d’Héria you will see how Francis Gomes-Léal known as Fandarix makes portraits, bottle holders, candlesticks, baskets, bags and other things from wood. He uses wood from local trees, mainly pines but also oaks and beeches. Unusual objects are on display and on sale in his chalet, located along the road leading to the Gallo-Roman site. Model Museum : “Le Musée des Machines à nourrir et

courir le monde” During his life, Marcel Yerly crafted about a hundred

models between 50cm and 3m long : cars, agricultural

of wood, actually work.

which covers an area of 1000 m2 and is illustrated by a 15-

Abbey Museum “Musée de l’Abbaye”

Located in the very place where Saint-Claude Abbey was in

A three-mile hike suitable for children in a pushchair

� The Tour of Lake Étival : from the village, follow the

signposts “Les Lacs” to a car park next to a small beach.

Discover the Hérisson Waterfalls :

“Cascades du Hérisson” This most beautiful natural site in the Jura is located about

20 miles away from Moirans-en-Montagne.

You will discover seven waterfalls along a two-and-a-half

mile path. Bear in mind that you will have to use the same

path on your way back to your car. So this five-mile hike will

take you a good three hours and you will need hiking boots

but it’s really worth it.

Dogs must be kept on a lead.

Go mountain biking with a certified guide

�Why not go for a bike ride with Olivier Faivre, a certified

guide, for the whole day or a half-day? He knows the region

Crossing the lake by boat

Perfect for hikers! There is the possibility of crossing Lake

Vouglans by boat from the Bellecin nautical base to the

Fishing Jura Sud is the perfect place to fish in lakes or rivers. Each

river or lake is run by an association. When you buy a fishing

permit, you can fish on sites run by the association that has

issued the permit. The association “La Gaule Moirantine”

runs an area which covers three quarters of Lake Vouglans,

the reservoir of the Saut-Mortier dam, the Ain river down to

Lake Coiselet and a private stream, the Héria.

LOCAL PRODUCTS AND MARKETS

Fruitière 1900 Fruitière 1900 is a traditional cheese dairy where the

visitors can see how Comté cheese was made in the 19th

century, cooked over a wood fire in a giant copper cauldron.

Sylvain, a cheese maker full of enthusiasm and energy,

makes cheese in front of the visitors and explains to them

step by step how he works. The visit lasts about 2 hours and

is free.

In addition to cheese, lots of regional products are also on

sale : wine, charcuterie and wooden objects.

find their raw-milk cheeses and yogurts on the farm or on the

ADVENTURE

Via Ferrata of Lake Vouglans More and more people have a go at Via Ferrata, which

consists in climbing on or along cliffs with the help of

equipment fixed in the cliffs (metal cables, rope bridges,

footbridges, ladders, metal rungs, etc.) The Lake Vouglans

via ferrata is a relatively easy route but bear in mind that

you need specific equipment (appropriate shoes, harness,

gloves, helmet, carabiners and shock-absorbing lanyard)

which can be rented on the spot if necessary.

The experience is both fun and exhilarating and the

exceptional view along the way suspended above the lake

is worth every trembling step!

Climbing There are three well-equipped climbing sites in the area

with special routes for children and beginners. You can

either climb by yourself or with the help of an instructor.

� The Mont Robert cliff in Moirans-en-Montagne (in front

of the tennis courts)

� The Crenans cliff (in Crenans two and a half miles away

from Moirans-en-Montagne)

� For children or beginners: a small cliff easy to climb on

the roadside just outside the Regardoir roundabout

(Moirans-en-Montagne north exit)

Swinging jump

Called “ponting” in French, the swinging jump, which can be

practised from the age of 10 to the age of 70, is an

alternative to bungee jumping and consists in jumping from

a bridge. Once you’ve jumped, this activity will give you a

great thrill as if you were on a giant swing like Tarzan in the

jungle ! A risk-free activity that is ideal for thrill seekers who

like to get the adrenalin going. Come and conquer your

Zip trekking adventure Not to be found anywhere else in France! The “Accro-

Viaduc-Aventure” is very similar to the adventure course

mentioned below, but you’ll get a real kick out of it if you

are a thrill seeker. Fly down 2000 metres of zip wires, 72

meters off the ground in complete safety. Both easy and

spine-chilling!

Aquatic hiking and canyoning Aquatic hiking is easier than canyoning. There is no need

for ropes insofar as you hike, swim and jump but don’t do

any abseiling. Suitable for children from 8 years old

provided they can swim.

Canyoning requires more athleticism, is more technical

and necessitates specific equipment. It takes a bit of

courage to jump or dive in the waterfalls but if you are a

daredevil, you’ll love it and will ask for more. Suitable for

adults and children over 12 who can swim.

Several associations listed below offer guided trips if

booked in advance. Prices vary from 35€ to 45€ per person

for three hours (equipment included).
