Birds in ArtBirds inspire artists worldwide as these avian marvels

signal seasonal and environmental change, mesmerize with their flight, dazzle with their colors, and soothe with their songs. Diverse work by 112 artists offers innovative perspectives of birds – preening, resting on unexpected perches, engaging in mischief, and displaying tenderness. The

39th annual exhibition features 126 all-new artworks. Once again, you’re invited

to savor artists’ interpretations and discover what inspires you.

Master Wildlife Artist

Barry Van Dusen’s luminous watercolors begin with field work

– direct observation and field sketching. Over thirty years, he’s filled more than eighty sketchbooks with drawings of birds and the natural world, which attest to his dual roles as an artist – first and foremost – and as a naturalist. The spontaneous, painterly style of Van Dusen’s watercolors is an intensely personal blend of realism and impressionism.

hat lessons can be learned from the demise of the passenger pigeon? Project Passenger Pigeon, a nationwide educational initiative marking the 100th anniversary of the species’ extinction, inspired the Woodson exhibition Legacy Lost & Saved: Extinct and Endangered Birds of North America. Comprising works from the collection and loans, including two Owen Gromme passenger pigeon paintings, Legacy Lost & Saved features other artists’ portrayals of species such as the Carolina parakeet and ivory-billed woodpecker. Related programs consider how a brighter future can be shaped by the past.

Each Thursday evening, enjoy informal performances by Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra ensembles. Many Thursday evenings also offer presentations, demonstrations, or hands-on art making to enhance your Birds in Art experience.
