leigh news 3FRUIT GROWING IN THE INVERLEIGH AREA

I recently had the opportunity to spend some quality time with Stuart Peel in his Inverleigh home, talking about the history and demise of the Apricot Industry here in Inverleigh. Stuart’s memory goes back to the early 1940’s up un-til about 1950 when apricots were grown extensively around the township. He was in primary school at the time (in the early 1940’s) and can recall picking apricots on their family property. Here is some of his recollections:

The Apricots were picked, just as they were turning pink, using 4 gallon kerosene tins as buckets. These were then carried, two buckets at a time, to the central collec-tion point in the orchard and transferred into wooden fruit boxes, 2 kero tins to a box. On the orchard the boxes had a wooden lid nailed on top before being carried by truck to the Inverleigh Railway Station and transferred into Railway Wagons and cover with a tarp. The tarps were of pretty good

quality and therefore very heavy to handle and get into place on the wagon. It was the Farmers responsibility to not only pick and pack the fruit, but to label the boxes, as well as de-liver them and hand pack them into the wagons from where they were send off to the factory? or who knows where for processing, probably into Jam and the like. The following day or so, the boxes were return to Inverleigh to be reused as more fruit was picked and packed.

Each fruit box was about 6 inches wide by about 3 to 4 feet long and 2 foot high (pretty good recollec-tion by a primary school kid) and each had to brand-ed on the end with the name of the farmer etc (eg “Q” for McQueen, one of many local farmers). The picking season ran for about 2 or 3 weeks during December and Janu-ary and besides Apricots, Apples, Pears and Plums were also grown in the area and their harvest times may have varied.

The demise of the Apricot fruit in Inverleigh was due to a brown rot in the late 1940’s, perhaps into the very early 1950’s and a low prices. There are some trees still existing on the river flat behind the general store, but Stuart recalls many 5 and 10 acre orchards on the south side of Common Road, including McQueens, Les Savage and also behind Max Peel’s home towards the river. Other orchards were on the corner of Common Rd and the highway, as well as the other side of the village behind Sandy McCallum’s family home and also on the North side of the Highway, west from the Police Station. There were also orchards on the east side of Inverleigh where the Sand Pits now are. Thanks to Eric “Stuart” Peel for sharing this with me to pass on to you all, to his father Eric Thomas Peel, who passed on life skills and knowledge to his sons and Stuart’s Grandfather “Smyth”, among the first to pick fruit in this area. If you have more information about fruit indus-try in Inverleigh, or a similar article you would like to share with the local community, get in touch with me and/or forward information to: [email protected].

The Inverleigh Pro-duce & Lifestyle Market is back for another season! Kicking off on Sunday Sep-tember the 16th at Lawsons Park from 9am to 1pm. The park has proved to be the ideal location for the Mar-ket providing ample space for growth and also a great atmosphere for stallholders and customers alike, being pet friendly and spacious in gorgeous natural surround-ings. We would like to remind the community that free stall sites will continue to be offered to any not-for-profit or community-based organizations and that free busking will also be offered again to any up and coming talent amongst local and re-gional youth. Last year through the markets community gifting initiative we managed to donate over $4000 back into the local and wider commu-nities, including donations of either cash or produce to The Outpost Homeless Shelter, Inverleigh Primary School, Inverleigh Football and Net-ball Club and the Inverleigh Social Club. Our stallholder line-up is already looking abun-

dant for the first market, with once again lots of amazing local growers, producers, creators, craftsman and artisans from the produce, food and lifestyle categories. The mar-ket is also now accepting all new Stallholder applications, which can be submitted through our newly created website. The market committee members will continue to run the Fruit and Vegetable stall them-selves in an attempt to source more local produce, and to ensure its freshness, with a view to having an end result of providing only local organic, chemical free and bio-dy-

namic goods. Our first market for the 2018/2019 season will be on Sun-day the 16th of September from 9am to 1pm. The market will con-tinue to run on the third Sunday of the month from September to March (excluding January) for the 2018/2019 season, from 9am to 1pm. Anyone interested in be-coming a stallholder or looking for further information regarding this Market can send us email at [email protected] or check out our website @ www.inverleighmarket.com

On the 1st of July this year, our Premier, Daniel Andrews, created Victorian Energy Compare. This site was set up offering all Victorians that receive an electricity and/or gas account two separate offersOFFER NO. 1 - For the first time the Victorian Govern-ment is offering a website where you can compare your electricity bill to all available providers (https://compare.energy.vic.gov.au/). Up until this point, we have only had comparison companies like “iSelect” where you could compare providers but only with those providers who offered a commission to iSelect for this service. This cut out many of the smaller retailers, even though they could offer much cheaper prices than any iSelect were offering. We have all been lured in by the mass marketing of large discounts offered on power (some as high as 38%) and large discounts for pay on time. These have lulled us all into a false sense of security that we are getting the best price possible when we haven’t been, because we haven’t ever been told where these discounts originate from.OFFER NO. 2 - A $50.00 cheque will be posted to you whether you compare and change providers or not. This offer is available to all account holders irrespective of whether you receive any pension or concession discounts on your bills, just for visiting the website. If you have an electricity and/or gas bill, you are eligible to take up this offer. However, this offer ends in a bit over 3 months time. There is only one small problem with this process. You have to have access to a computer, the internet and have an email address. I realised early on that this process prevents many retired people and pensioners from gaining access to find-

ing and switching to a much cheaper provider, or from access-ing the free $50.00 cheque on offer, when these are the people, who, at the least, could most benefit from receiving a $50.00 cheque with no strings attached. I have spoken with Victorian Energy Compare explain-ing that I live in an area where many people don’t have access to the internet. I have gained permission to use my email address to help anyone wishing to access this offer that do not have internet access. I am now volunteering my services to anyone that would like to activate these offers. If you give me a ring and organise a time to come and see me with your latest electricity and/or gas accounts I can activate this process for you via my email account. Please note: Your $50.00 rebate will not be sent to me. It will be posted to you, personally, at the address where you receive your electricity/gas accounts. I have already helped two people in Inverleigh who do not have the internet, to claim their $50 rebate. They are extremely grateful to have had access to this offer. Personally, I thought I had access to the cheapest electricity on offer. That was until this site was set up. Since then, I have cut a further $360.00 off my yearly power bills with a company that offered no discount from my bill and no pay on time discount, only very real savings. (I cannot com-pare gas as I have bottled gas.) Feel free to contact me if you don’t have any family members or friends who can help you. I will keep confidences and only want to assist those who have no way of accessing this rebate or comparing available rates.

POLICE REPORT FOR AUGUST 2018Hello all, I had an incident reported to me on the 31/7/2018 involving a secondary school student riding her bicycle along Gregory Drive Inverleigh around 8 am heading towards Common Road. It has been reported that a white coloured utility drove extremely close to the rider causing her to fall from the bicycle. No registration has been obtained and we are seeking anybody who may have seen the incident or knows the vehicle involved. I would hope that drivers would give cyclists a wide berth when passing as cyclists are very vulnerable especially when involved in a collision with a vehicle. There was another similar incident in a neighbouring area where the rider was injured and the driver was actually jailed. There have been some ongoing incidents involving offenders in the grounds of the Teesdale Primary school on weekends often on a Friday evening. Incidents have included the sports shed door being forced open, graffiti on walls, attempts made to kick in toilet doors and the most recent activity involved offenders throwing rocks through the rear glass door and a portable window. As this has happened over several weekends it is obviously some youths from the local area. Could residents keep an eye on the school and report suspicious behaviour to Police and the school. Parents in the area please know where your children

actually are on Friday and Saturday nights. If children say they are going to a friend’s house check with that house to see that they are actually there. Cameras are being installed and when caught the offenders will have a court appearance, make sure it is not your children doing this. Some people are contacting me in relation to dumped rubbish including building materials. Council should be notified for the investigation and clean up of the area. I am still getting some people excessively speeding in the area including a motorist doing 120 km/h in the 60 km/h zone travelling East over the Leigh River bridge on the Hamilton Highway. I also caught a P Plater doing 138 in the 100 zone of the Rokewood-Shelford Road Shelford. Recently I attended a collision on the Hamilton Highway at Burnside road Murgheboluc where a P plater ran into the rear of a turning car in the 80 km/h zone. Whilst at the scene I found numerous cars speeding there even though I had my Blue lights on. As a result of this and other incidents at the location I am doing more patrols of this area. Please make sure you do not exceed 80 km/h around this hill.

Keep safe Chris

INVERLEIGH CEMETERY OLD TREE REMOVALS

The Trustees of the Inverleigh Cemetery Trust have decided to have removed a number of dead or dying Pine Trees along the western and eastern boundaries of the Cemetery, with some branch removals on the northern boundary. The trees to be removed are all old, either dead or on the way out, have developed the charac-teristic lean of very old and dying Pine Trees, and are considered to be a public risk, both to Cemetery visitors who may be walking in their vicinity or to grave sites / monuments that are within the area where they could fall. If anyone has any queries they can ring either:

Sandy McCallum (President of the Cemetery Trust) on 0408 378 752 or

Des Guinane (Secretary of the Cemetery Trust) on 0409 224 811.

INVERLEIGH TOWN ENTRANCE UPDATE At last, progress is being made for the long awaited Inverleigh Town Entrance project! You will notice some large stones at the east and west ends of town. These 2-3 tonne stones

will become the 2 metre high ends of the sign; with local paddock stone be-ing used in a traditional drystone style; filling in the middle. After a lengthy planning and commu-nity consultation phase, our chosen stonemason, David Long will begin building the gently curved traditional drystone-wall; after concrete footings are established hopefully by mid September.

Media Release15 August 2018Surf Coast Shire Council submission on Inverleigh Wind Farm proposal At a special meeting on 14 August Surf Coast Shire Council confirmed the details of its submission to the Minister for Planning on an application to build a wind farm at a site fronting Peels and Gnarwarre Roads.

The proposal known as the Inverleigh Wind Farm seeks to establish 16 wind turbines at the site.

In Victoria the Minister for Planning is the respon-sible authority for assessing wind farm applications not local Councils.

Surf Coast Shire Council’s submission notes that wind farms are an important element in Victoria achieving a target of 25% of energy being generated by renewable sources by 2020.

The submission reiterates Council’s support of this goal and the fact that it has convened the Renew-able Energy Taskforce to help guide local activities to achieve this target.

The submission notes that the topography and weather in the general area appear conducive to a wind farm operation but that a range of social, environmental and economic factors need to be considered before suitability of the site can be deter-mined.

Council’s submission also requests the Minister for Planning consider the adequacy of the engagement with the community.

“Victoria needs wind farms if we are to achieve the state government target of 25% renewable energy by 2020,” said Surf Coast Shire Mayor Cr David Bell.

“Council recognises this fact and supports the devel-opment of wind farms in the shire. This is confirmed through the work we are undertaking with the Renewable Energy Taskforce, where we are looking to deliver local actions that will help achieve the renewable energy targets,” said Cr Bell.

“However, Council does not have the ex-pertise to assess the Inverleigh Wind Farm proposal at a technical level and we are aware of local community concerns that we ask the minis-ter to consider.

“Whilst Council did not run its own community consultation process to inform its submission a number of community members have come for-ward with a range of views including concerns about local impacts.”

Council’s submission highlights a range of these concerns and asks that representatives of the minister take the time to understand these is-sues, said the Mayor.

“We request those assessing this application to visit the proposed site and meet with neighbour-ing property owners to get a fuller sense of the implications of the application,” said Cr Bell.

“It’s apparent to Council, through conversations with community members, and our own obser-vations, that the community engagement on the Inverleigh Wind Farm has not met community expectation nor has it followed DELWP’s guide-lines for engagement.

“Council’s submission therefore notes that an alternative community engagement model that provided early, ongoing and meaningful en-gagement would improve the likelihood of an outcome that meets community expectation and supports state objectives for acceptance of renewable energy,” said Cr Bell.

“Council encourages all interested people to make their own submission to the Minister for Planning,” Cr Bell added.

Information about the Inverleigh Wind Farm is available at www.inverleighwindfarm.net

Submissions are due by 20 August 2018 and must quote application number PA1800340. They can be sent to:POST: Minister for Planning PO Box 500, East Melbourne VIC 8002EMAIL: [email protected]

AUGUST 2018 CALENDARLeigh News 11

Football season was over, which meant only a couple of weeks until the summer tennis season began. We couldn’t wait! Sadly though, the first week of the season in October was a wash out due to those spring rains… how deflated we all felt! Although the farming community didn’t share the same disappointment. There were many junior teams at Inverleigh Tennis Club in our “younger” days, lots of kids wanting to play a match of tennis from many of the country clubs competing in the Bannockburn Tennis Association. So grateful for those busy parents carting us carloads of kids across the country-side, as we can remember playing at some isolated tennis courts, such as at Maude, Sutherlands Creek and Gher-inghap. These same parents would also take up umpire duties and give encouragement to both teams compet-ing. Morning tea was a highlight and was always supplied by the home team, some were quite a spread, typical of country club hosts. Seeing “wrigglers” in the made-up cordial guaranteed a few squeals, but was part of country life with water tanks. There was many a club rivalry born which carried through to seniors also. The teams usually consisted of three (3) boys and three (3) girls with each player participating in two dou-bles matches and a mixed set. It could be a long morning depending on the

score and could make the parents pushed for time to get to their afternoon tennis matches. Tennis training was always fun, although not when someone hit the ball over the fence into the thorny boxthorn bushes on Mrs Burke’s property. There also used to be a concrete wall you could hit against which backed onto those thorny boxthorn bushes …. certainly an incentive for accuracy in your strokes!

This is no longer an issue as Mrs Burke’s property no longer exists as it is now all part of the Primary School grounds. For the junior competition, age groups consisted of U/13, U/15 and U/17. We were rewarded occasionally and enjoyed success by winning a Pre-miership. The photo seen here is from season 1976/77 Under 15 C Grade team. We had an overabundance of team members in that age group that season. Each week we took turns to stand out and cheer on our team. Tennis season was so popular that it also comprised other compe-titions, one being the popular tennis tournament which was held at the Inverleigh Tennis Club over the Christ-mas break for many years. Boxing Day was Doubles day and the following Saturday would be the Mixed Doubles competition day. This was always a very well supported tournament, so much so, that whole sections would have to go to neighbouring club’s tennis courts: Teesdale, Shelford, Murgheboluc and Bannockburn. Inverleigh had seven (7) courts available to them, comprising 4 x club courts, 1 x school court, 2 x St Paul’s Church courts. The tournament organisers had quite the task arranging the draw and to make the call to play what sections elsewhere. It was such a great social time for the community, even with it being held at a busy time for farmers during harvesting,

they still came to play. You would have lined up your doubles and/or mixed partner at the start of the season for the tournament, and the memory of waiting to hear your names called out over the PA system along with which court to play on, brings back great memories. Of course, to play on Court 1 at the clu-brooms in front of all those people was the ultimate. Most of our families were involved with the Club playing tennis and helped in the organisation of the tournament at some time over the years, so there are many memories of happy times spent at the Inverleigh Tennis Club. After growing too old for junior competition, we moved onto playing tennis in the senior afternoon compe-tition. This is where we experienced a different degree of competitiveness, as we were playing against adults of vary-ing ages. As for members of the winning team pictured, some are still known to pick up the racquet on either a social or competitive nature. Anne-Maree is currently a member of the Bannockburn Tennis Club’s midweek ladies competi-tion within the Geelong Tennis Associ-ation and recently competed in winning back to back grand finals. Helen rup-tured her Achilles during a rally whilst playing years ago and decided tennis wasn’t good for her health anymore. Currently the Inverleigh Tennis Club consists of two junior teams play-ing in the 2017/18 summer tennis sea-son. No longer are there any Saturday mixed senior or midweek ladies teams, although it is hoped these will return in the future. We hope you have enjoyed reading about some of our memories of playing tennis at the Inverleigh Tennis Club, as we had many happy times there. SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL The term has been a busy but exciting one. We are already seeing great results from the professional development that Miss Deppeler, Mrs Miller and I have undertaken. The students have really enjoyed using their “sizzling starts” as part of the 7 Steps to Writing Success program and their creative writing has really flourished. It is great to see the results of the implementa-tion of our new and exciting programs that will further support the educational needs of all our students. Grade Three Camp Our students really enjoyed participating in the camp with other schools from the Moorabool Valley Association (MVA). This is a great opportunity for the kids to try new things and push themselves out of their comfort zones. There were many highlights for the kids. One of which was the enormous swing that they all got the opportunity to have a turn on. Another highlight was the night time nature walk, and the kids were pretty happy with the food too! Professional Development This year the staff and I have attended numerous professional development events. We continue to focus on differentiation and point of need teaching as well as incorporating the new skills we have learnt. Targeting spelling, developing a Growth and a Mathematical Mindset and the 7 Steps to Writing Success program are all professional development programs we have participated in this year to increase the literacy and

numeracy of the students. We will continue to use this knowledge to enhance our teaching and learning opportuni-ties for our students. School Website If you haven’t already, please take a look at our new website. It will continue to develop with more content being added as the year progresses. I will upload our school news-letters and upcoming dates on the calendar to ensure that everyone is aware of what is happening in terms of excur-sions and swimming programs etc. Shopping Tour On Saturday 13th October we are running a shop-ping tour to Melbourne – why not join us and get organised for Christmas! The bus departs at 6.45am from Shelford Primary. The cost is $40.00 and includes morning and after-noon tea. as this is when the damage is occurring. If you notice anything suspicious, please notify the Inverleigh Police. We hope that together we can help stop this unwanted vandalism and dam-age from occurring any more. Year 1/2 Swimming ProgramOur 1/2 classes have now completed their 10 day swimming program at Leisure Link. The program was a huge success, with almost all students being able to attend. The feedback from staff and from the swimming instructors has been very positive, with students showing great respect and representing our school well over the 10 days. Students were well and truly tired by the end of the program, and have settled back into regular classroom instruction this week. Thank you to Meg Andrews for her organisation of the program and to Tamara McGuire and Laura Child for ensuring students were respectful and responsible and organised for the two weeks.Mudbrick Café Dates for 2018 – Open Wednesdays (once a term) 11.30-12.15pm The last Café date for 2018 is Wednesday 7th Novem-ber. Indonesian Music Incursion Students in Year 3-6 participated in an-other Indonesian Culture incursion. They joined in activities to learn about Indonesian music, dance and instruments. They had the chance to learn a tradi-tional Javanese dance and also play a bamboo instrument called the “angklung”. It was great to see all the students having a go and enjoying this different experience.School Concert The preparation and rehearsals for this year’s school concert are in full swing. Earl Leonard has worked hard with our students to develop songs and a script based on the 5 school values at Teesdale. The concert will be held at the Geelong West Town Hall on Thursday September 20. Tickets can be purchased at the door. Attendance The school’s attendance policy was updated through School Council last term. It can be found on the school’s website. One change of legislation to note for all families is around the communication of absences. If your child is absent and you have not made contact with the school to inform us of a reason – by message on Sentral to class teachers, absence notice from the office or phone call – you will now receive a message asking you to let the school know the reason for the absence. This is a change in state-wide legislation for all schools and families, to know that all students are safe and where they should be. Thank you for supporting staff with this process. Athletics Congratulations to the following students who are moving on to the next round of athletics on 11th September. We wish you all the best of luck and know you will all do your best on the day. Creativity comes to Inverleigh Public Hall on Saturday 27th October. We invite you to participate in creating small art pieces in a variety of mediums. Albert Einstein said, “Creativity was intel-ligence having fun,” - turn your creative ideas into reality. With Christmas approaching, why not get crafty and create a present for family friends, loved ones? Be creative, productive and relax. We have 5 tutors from the Golden Plains Arts Inc. that you can have fun with and learn from, sharing their skills and mediums of interest. Lyn Dickson will be using assorted papers and collected recycled materials to collage an artwork for our mini canvases. Marion Parker has chosen to work with 3D paper construction, using paper in creative ways, helping you produce images of visual interest. Rosslyn Bosnar has exciting new ways to create with ‘acrylic pour-ing’ on small articles. Marita Reynolds is working with Inktense pencils to create brightly coloured imagery using pencil that when mixed with water takes on an intense colour and Peter Reynolds will be sharing his Zentangle skills, using pattern either in black or colour, to produce interesting designs. All materials are supplied, no previous experience required. Get the creative juices flowing! You can create 1 to 5 images of your choice using and learn-ing a medium of interest. When the day is completed we ask that you leave one piece of work for an exhibition that will be held at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre in November. Bookings are essential. Call Marita on 0425 735 581.

DRAFT INVEREIGH STRUCTURE PLAN UPDATE

VEGGIE-LICIOUS WEEK

Over the last week of July, children across our Shire participated in an innovative food education initiative known as Veggie-licious Week.

Over 170 children from our child care rooms, kindergartens and Family Day Care services took part in various fun activities designed to create exposure to different vegetables and provide hands-on opportunities to increase confidence and knowledge around vegetables.

Activities during the week included cooking sessions, (making vegetable soup, slices, and mini pizzas), garden planting activities, with seedling pot plants to take home; vegetable story time, education and exposure sessions; dress-up days and vegetable themed arts and craft activities.

GRANTS SUCCESSES

Golden Plains Shire Council has secured two key grants of $100,000 and $10,000 to support our community’s health and wellbeing efforts.

Council has secured $100,000 from the Victorian Government’s Country Football and Netball Program 2018-19 for the redevelopment of the Bannockburn Victoria Park netball courts, and a $10,000 VicHealth Exploration grant from the Innovation Challenge grant program. Council would like to acknowledge the State Government and VicHealth for their support with these important initiatives.

IMPORTANT NOTICES VETERANS GRANTS

The Victorian Government has opened the Veterans Capital Works Grant Program, designed to help fund capital works for facilities that support veterans, their families and the broader community.

Major Grants of up to $200,000 and Minor Grants of up to $50,000 are available. Eligible projects include renovations to ex-service organisation buildings and facilities that will help improve access and usability of the facility for veterans and the broader community and ensure the on-going viability of facilities either through increased usage or operating efficiencies. Applications close on Monday 27 August. Details can be found at www.dpc.vic.gov.au/veterans/veterans-grants

JOBS: • Finance Manager (applications close 20 August 2018)• Strategic Planner (applications close 20 August 2018)• Team Leader People and Safety (applications close 13 August 2018)

Information regarding all vacancies, including position descriptions, can be found at goldenplains.applynow.net.au

There are some great initiatives happening in our Shire at the moment to support local parents and children.

Below you can learn about ‘Veggie-licious week’ activities – over 170 children around the Shire were involved and I hope we now have lots of new veggie fans around the Shire. We are also inviting families to celebrate National Science Week with their children by attending Science Sensations with Professor Brains at the Bannockburn Library on Tuesday 14 August from 10am. Families can enjoy super science with elements of surprise experiments to enthuse and amaze all. Additionally our Healthy Families Program, in conjunction with Drummond Street Services, are facilitating a ‘Parenting Children Who Worry Too Much’ seminar for parents of children aged between two and 10 years of age. Check out our our online events calendar at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/events for more information.

We have also had some recent success with obtaining funding to support health and wellbeing in our Shire. It is so important to Council to support physical activity, increase participation rates and improve facilities for our residents. The Bannockburn netball court surfaces are not up to scratch and the community expressed concerns about the safety of the facility as well – community safety is paramount to Council. Looking at how we can help our adult residents ‘Step over the Sidelines’ is a great initiative – we know that inactivity is a big problem and we know being active has huge benefits to the participant, beyond just the physical.

Cr Helena Kirby – Mayor

Council would like to thank the 70 people who came to see the draft Structure Plan proposed for Inverleigh at the conversation posts in June.

We received detailed and valuable feedback, including seven written submissions. We have heard some very clear messages about Inverleigh, including that the country town/village character is cherished by the community, some conflicting views about lot sizes and proposals for rural and service industry, commercial, recreation and horse riding/bridle paths. Find out more, including the next steps, by searching for ‘Draft Inverleigh Structure Plan update’ on our website.

MAYOR MESSAGE – SEPTEMBER 2018

More than 70 business leaders and young entrepreneurs enjoyed lunch and networking at Clyde Park Vineyard & Bistro at our August Business Networking event.

Guests heard from Peter Dostis and Linda Wong from Runway on their journey to help start-ups and entrepreneurs in both Geelong and Ballarat. We also heard from local success story Josh Walker from World Class Vintage, who continues to go from strength to strength in his online business. These events are a great opportunity to connect with other local businesses and I encourage you to sign up to receive economic development updates to your email by visiting goldenplains.vic.gov.au/newsletter/signup.

Local residents, community groups and organisations have put forward 13 community projects as part of the State Government's ‘Pick My Project’ initiative. It’s time for the community, including local businesses, to get behind their favourite projects and vote. Without the votes, projects from Golden Plains Shire might not be funded – see the story below for more information.

Cr Helena Kirby – Mayor

STOP KITTY LITTERING PICK YOUR PROJECT: VOTE TODAY

Council will be offering residents, with support of local vets, a 50% discount on desexing with each new cat registration from Monday 1 September 2018 for a limited time. This initiative aims to address increased numbers of cats being impounded and euthanised in Golden Plains Shire.

To be eligible for the offer, the cat must be currently unregistered and the vet practices will need to process registration applications on site at their facilities.

Contact one of two Vet clinics to organise an appointment (and mention this offer). Residents in the south of the Shire should contact the Golden Plains Veterinary Practice on 5281 2226, and residents in the north of the Shire should contact the Smythesdale Veterinary Practice on 5318 5750.

‘Pick my Project’ voting is now live, which means Victorians can vote on their favourite projects, with 13 fantastic Golden Plains Shire projects put forward by residents, community groups and organisations.

Pick My Project is a State Government community grants initiative, with $30 million available to fund local projects. Victorians were asked to come up with project ideas earlier this year and make a submission.

Members of the Golden Plains community are encouraged to view the list of local projects and help make their favourite project ideas a reality by voting for the top three eligible projects in their community by 17 September.

To vote for a local project, visit pickmyproject.vic.gov.au

Mother Nature really turned on some beautiful weather to showcase our golf course and also our local Community for the recent Inverleigh Disc Golf Open. Inverleigh Golf Club along with the Geelong Disc Golf Club combined to host this event, which was held over 2 days on the 24th & 25th August. Glorious sunshine shone on the specially designed course, and after a foggy start to the 1st day, the 60 players who descended on Inverleigh, were treated to perfect conditions for Disc Golf. Inverleigh is a full champi-onship elite level course on the sports A-tier Australian tour. It is a very challenging course that throws up many obstacles, including many trees and acacia bushes. Plans are in place to make the disc golf course permanent, which can only further benefit Inverleigh. Players travelled from interstate and locally to compete at Inverleigh, including the current Male & Fe-male Champions – Patrick Robinson & Cassie Sweetten.

And it wasn’t only the Golf Club that benefited over the weekend, the Inverleigh Community in general was buzzing and local businesses also reaped the benefits. Accom-modation at the 2 local B & B’s – R & R, and Artworks were fully booked, as well as local eateries. It is estimated that this event injected

IN OTHER NEWS Spring Babies

Flight training begins in spring, which is when we start getting young birds on the ground who are unable to fly. If you see a baby bird on the ground, it’s most likely its parents are nearby.

We’ve all heard about how birds will reject their off-spring if humans touch them. This is not true!

If you are able to reach the nest, the best thing you can do is to gently pick up the nestling and put it back in the nest.

Nestlings are fuzzy or have naked skin. They are too young to survive long periods out of the nest.

Anxiety and Phobias in Pets

Just like people pets can suffer anxiety. The fear response is natural and beneficial, when there is a reason to be afraid. However, when this re-sponse occurs when there is no threat or danger, this is called anxiety.

An anxious or fearful dog is more likely to bite. We often hear people say, “He didn’t give a warning before he bit me”.

Signs your dog might be feeling anxious include:

*Looking away or down *Ears to the side *Licking lips *Panting *Aggression or biting *Destroying furniture *Barking continuously *Moving slowly away from you *Urinating in the wrong place

Many dogs find it difficult to be left alone for long periods. They are used to our company and struggle to cope when we leave for work, school or shopping. Dogs often turn to vocalisation and destructive behaviour to relieve the stress of being alone.

Teaching your dog to spend time on its own will greatly reduce the chances of destructive behaviour.

Tips to help with separation anxiety:

*Take your dog for a walk in the morning *Set up a treasure hunt in the back yard with treats, and bones. *Rotate toys in the yard, rather than having the same toys every day *Don’t make a big deal when you leave for the day or when you return. *Reward calm behaviour

Fledglings have most of their feathers and it’s quite com-mon for them to fall out of their nest and spend several days hoping around on the ground while learning to fly.

Their parents will continue to feed and protect them.

In either situation, if you think the baby bird is injured. Contact the clinic or bring it into the clinic. Our Veterinarians will always treat native wildlife at no charge.

Signs of stress or anxiety in cats - symptoms are often subtle and non specific and include:

*Spraying *Excessive grooming *Hiding away for extended periods *Excessive meowing *Reduced appetite

Cats are very sensitive to the environment around them and many things can cause anxiety:

*Moving house *New family members human or animal *Change in daily routine *Loud parties and noises

Some of the behavioural problems triggered by separation anxi-ety in cats are the same as those seen in dogs. Vocalizing after the owner leaves, inappropriate urination, and less often destructiveness.

Tips to help with separation anxiety:

*Leave a distracting toy *A comfortable perch that allows a view from a window *Carpeted towers or scratch poles *Leaving a radio on

What to do if you suspect your pet suffers from anxiety.

The first step is to discuss the situation with our Veterinari-ans. It is important to make sure your pets behaviour is not due to an underlying medical problem.

For example inappropriate urination may mean your pet has a urinary tract infection. A cat that is overgrooming may have a food allergy.

In some cases, our Vets may precribe anti-anxiety medications

Future Friendly Solar Power recently installed solar energy systems for the Inverleigh Bowls Club, Shelford Cricket Club and the Inverleigh Golf Club “The Golf Club system is being fully funded under the Solar for communities grant. It consists of a 5kW inverter and 24 x 275W Trina Honey panels providing 6.6kW of maximum catch-ment. Total cost is $9,500, David from the Golf club said.” This system has come at the perfect time for the club as a brand new electric pumping sprinkler system has just been installed. This will allow the club to use the new sprinkler system without increas-ing the electricity costs to the club.” The system should generate 11,000 Kilowatt hours per year (kWh) which will save the club around $3,000 per year. The Inverleigh Bowls Club have been able to secure $13,750 in funding for a larger system that consists of 40 x 275w Trina Honey panels a total of 11kW and a 10kW Fronius inverter. This system should generate around 18,000 Kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year. The Bowls club can expect to save around $5,000 per year off their energy bills. The Shelford Cricket club have the same system as the Golf Club, saving the Club around $3,000 per year. The bowls season is just around the corner starting in October. After a successful season in 2017/18, having our midweek team make the finals and our Saturday team winning the Grand Final in Division 5, the members are looking forward to another great year.

We have some new initiatives kicking off this year which we hope will offer the community the opportunity to enjoy lawn bowls and the great club facilities.

The first is “BOWLING WITH BABIES”. If you have a baby, please come along. Such a great opportu-nity to meet new parents and babies in the local area, give lawn bowls a try and get outdoors for some fresh country air. The first catch up will be on Thursday 11 October 2018 at the Inverleigh Bowls Club from 10am-12pm. Please don’t worry if you

can’t make it on time or if you need to leave early, we would love to welcome you to the club regardless and understand that life isn’t always predictable and planned when there are little people involved. We are planning to meet for a catch up and bowl every Thursday for 4 weeks with the possibility to continue if everyone enjoys it. We have family friendly facilities available including a change table and spaces on the green for your babies to play while you have a bowl and chat in a relaxed atmosphere. Cost is $2 and we can also arrange for a coffee/ tea/ hot chocolate from Sonny Café (at your own cost) if you would like one. All we ask is that you wear flat soled shoes (runners etc.) Bowls are provided as well as some friendly people to help you to learn to play! We know that there are lots of babies in the Inverleigh and surround-ing areas with our local community growing all the time. Please consider coming down to the club to give this a try, who knows, you may even discover a new talent and a new friend! Lawn bowls is a sport suitable for all ages and abilities. Please get in touch with Suzy Coleman for more info on 0431 080 977 or like our Facebook page, Inverleigh Bowls Club where further information will be available soon. We look forward to seeing you there.

“JACK ATTACK” The other initiative is for our local school children. We would like to offer a 2 day (2hrs per day) coaching / training clinic in lawn bowls for 8 to 13 year olds. We want to run this for 2 consecutive days in the first week of the September school holidays. Our members, running this, have working with children certificates. There will be no cost involved, we just ask

that flat soled shoes be worn (runners) and the club will provide bowls and coaching. Please keep an eye out in the school newsletter for more details on this or contact Marj Peel to register your interest. [email protected] We will continue to run our “BAREFOOT BOWLS” on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, keep an eye out for the signs around town, everyone is welcome to drop in. Our members will be at the club each Friday night (5.30pm onwards) from mid-September for practice, so please feel free to drop in and have a try of lawn bowls, we are always looking for new players. The bar will be open on these nights as well. I look forward to keeping you all up to date with what is happening around the club during the season.
