Connecting an iCON 50 to a CC50 using MicroSurvey Layout

Introduction This guide describes how to connect your Leica iCON 50 robotic

total station to a Leica CC50 data collector using Long Range

Bluetooth.

You will then learn how to create a Leica iCON50 robotic total

station profile in Layout, and connect the two devices via their long

range Bluetooth radios.

You will also learn how to connect your iCON 50 robotic total

station to your CC50 using a serial cable and then using short-range

Bluetooth.

Important Note: You only need to create a particular profile once.

After that Layout will preserve and use this already-created profile.

Current

Version This guide was written using Layout version 1.0.3.3 installed on a

Leica CC50. If you are using a different version, your screens may

look differently than what is displayed in this guide.

Before you begin Have your Leica iCON 50 robotic total station and Leica CC50 data

collector with Layout installed on it close by. You will need them to

complete this guide.

Turn on your

iCON 50 Robot We must put the iCON 50 robotic total station in the correct long

range Bluetooth state.

Press the red ON/OFF button on your robot to start it.

Then press and hold the ON/OFF button until you see the 3

lights on the display start to cycle.

When the COM (middle) light turns to red, release the

ON/OFF button. This light will remain on while the

instrument is on.

You have just turned off internal Bluetooth, and communication

with the CC50 will now be via the RH16 radio handle.

In other words, this turns on the long range Bluetooth in the

instrument.

You are now ready to start Layout.

Creating an

Instrument

Profile

Instrument profiles contains settings specific to the particular

instrument you are attempting to connect to and use. Once you have

created a profile, you can then select it when creating a new project

and all of that particular instrument’s settings will be used. This

becomes especially useful when you have multiple instruments.

Selecting a profile vs. having to enter settings every time

significantly speeds up you day.

We will create an instrument profile for the Leica iCON 50 Robotic

Total Station.

may be times when you will want to work behind the total station in

a non-robotic mode, and connect your data collector to the

instrument via a cable. Skip ahead to page 27 of this guide to learn

how to connect your iCON 50 robot to a CC50 using a serial cable.

Connecting an iCON 50 to a CC50 using MicroSurvey Layout, continued

Congratulations You have successfully created a project in Layout.

You set your instrument to be in the correct Radio Handle Bluetooth

(and then serial and short-range Bluetooth connection) mode.

You then connected your CC50 to the iCON 50 robot.

You setup your instrument over a point and took a backsight

measurement. You stored this point.

You are ready to continue measuring.

Remember, Layout will preserve these settings in your instrument

profile. You only have to create this profile once. In other words,

you don’t have to follow these steps each and every time you want

to survey using this total station and data collector.
