This tutorial will lead you through the complete stakeout of a tennis court.

Survey to completeA client is building two new tennis courts. Every tennis court has 16 points to stakeout (two net posts and 14 court corners). The corner markings need to be staked out. Afterwards the current surface needs to be compared with the design court surface.

Before Going Outside

ObjectiveBefore going outside the dxf file as well as all the tennis court surface files that make up the DTM have to be transferred onto the RX900.

Key Screen Description1 To transfer data to or from the office computer, the

RX900 controller must be connected to the office computer (optional for RX900 controller with color screen) using Microsoft ActiveSync. Microsoft Active-Sync is the synchronization software for Windows mobile-based pockte computers.Before data can be transferred, the ActiveSync soft-ware must first be installed on the office computer. The ActiveSync software is freeware and is supplied on the GPS900 CD ROM.

2 Turn on the RX900 and connect it with the GEV161 USB cable to the PC. The Microsoft ActiveSync program will start automatically and connect with the RX controller.

3 Click the Explore button in ActiveSync. The Windows Explorer opens.

4 Copy the TennisCourt.dxf file and paste it into the folder Mobile Device/StorageCard/Data.Mobile Device is the name given to the RX controller by ActiveSync.

5 Copy all the Court surface files that make up the DTM and paste it into the folder Mobile Device/Storage-Card/DBX.

6 Close the Explorer window, the ActiveSync and discon-nect the GPS900 receiver from the PC. Connect the GPS900 receiver to the ATX900.

Preparation Conversion Orientation Stakeout Comparison

CONF 9 Select the Tennis Court DXF file in the From File field and choose the Tennis Court job in the To Job field. Access the configuration settings for the DXF Importer.

CONT 10 Ensure that the File Units are set to Metre and the Create Vertex Points setting is set to No.

DXF files have no defined units and therefore the units must be defined in the DXF Import program.

Confirm the configuration settings.

ObjectiveOrientate yourself onto the site grid by using the GPS Resection application.

CONT 3 Enter the name Tennis Court (you must enter a name for the resection !). Select the job Tennis Court in the Job field.

The Tennis Court job includes data imported from the DXF file.

Continue with Step 1 of the GPS Resection.

OCUPY 4 You need to select a control point to measure to. Select Blk_1 in the Point ID field, occupy the control point and measure it.The measurement will automatically be stopped, the point will be saved (because of the standard point occupation settings) and you will automatically progress to Step 2.

ADD 5 Within this step you can confirm the measured point and add new points to the GPS Resection calculation. Add a new point.

CONT 2 Select the Stakeout program and access the Stakeout Begin panel.

CSYS 3 The Stakeout Begin panel is a "sanity check" that allows you to choose the correct job and coordinate system. Select the Tennis Court job in the Stakeout Job field. The points to stakeout come from the stakeout job and they are stored to the job selected in the Job field. Check that the Coord System used is Tennis Court.

NEW 6 In the list of jobs highlight the job Tennis Court and create a new job for the 'normal' job.

As the new Tennis Measure job was created when the Tennis Court job was highlighted, it will take over the same coordinate system and codelist.

DATA 9 GPS900 allows you to apply a stakeout filter to a job. Highlight the Stakeout job in the Stakeout begin panel access the Tennis Court Data Management panel. The Data Management panel lists all the points in the job and also includes a map view page.

PAGE 16 Here you can see the points to stakeout and your current position. You can zoom into your current posi-tion.On the top you can see the distance (DIST:) and the fill (FILL:) or cut (CUT:) to the stakeout point.

OCUPY 17 Stakeout first point. Use the map view to move to the point to stakeout. As you near the point you may have to zoom in. When you are within 0.50m you will hear the GPS900 beeping. Look at the arrow in the map view. This shows you the direction to the point to stakeout. When you have reached the point ocupy and measure it.

18 Look again in the map view. The point has disap-peared !

The filter that you set before means that after recording a point it is removed from the map view. You only see what it left to stakeout.

19 Find the nearest point to your current position to stakeout.Switch back to the Stake page. Here you can use the bull's eys together with the numeric values to move to the stakeout point.Stakeout the point and find the next nearest point.

20 Every tennis court needs to be set out to a certain accuracy. The GPS900 allows you to define certain QC controls that ensure that points are recorded with a defined quality. Access the stakeout configuration panel and switch to the Checks page.

CONT 21 Add a position check of 0.02m and a vertical check of 0.04m.

Accept the check settings and continue.

22 Ckeck the check. Move about one metre away from the point to stakeout and measure. After the meas-urement is stopped you will receive a Difference Limit Exceeded warning. This panel shows you how far your are away from the stakeout point.

It would be possible to skip the point or save it despite being outside the defined limit. But you wont do that.

The tennis court should be set properly, so go back stakeout the correct position!

23 Finish stakeout the tennis courts. Stakeout the remaining points to finish the two tennis courts. Each court should have 16 points (two net posts and 14 court corners).

Now you have finished staking out the corners of the tennis courts. Do not leave the stakeout program, but return to the Stakeout Task panel. In the next step you will check how the current surface differs to the design court surface.

ObjectiveComparison of the current surface with the design surface of the tennis court. The design surface is represented by the DTM which was transfered onto the RX900 in "Before Going Outside".

Key Screen Description1 Return to the Stakeout Task panel.

CONT 2 In the Stakeout Task field choose DTM only and in the DTM Job field choose Court Surface and continue.

3 Inside the tennis court boundaries you are on the DTM. Here the actual surface can be compared to the DTM design surface in real-time.The D Ht field shows the design surface height at the current position. The difference from the current height and the design surface height is shown in CUT/FILL.

Notice the behaviour of the bull's eye when you approach the design surface.

4 Move around the court and check the surface in various locations. Switch to the Map view. Within the Map view the current position can be seen.
