When you first start thegame you must play in Story mode. This mode follows the plot ofthe original Star Wars trilogy. The characters that were in certainscenes in the movies are found in corresponding scenes in thegame. You cannot deviate from that in Story mode. For example, inEpisode IV A New Hope, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbaccawent to the holding cells on the Death Star to find Princess Leia,so in the games Story mode, you have to use those same charac-ters to find her.

After you have completed a mission through Story mode, youmay go back and play through it again in Freeplay mode. In thismode, you can return to any mission, and have the option of playingas any character from your character inventory. After you makeyour choice, the game randomly chooses a cast of other charactersfrom your inventory. This cast of characters is always available foryour use throughout the mission. You can switch to any of themat any time. The game chooses characters with the different abilitiesyou might need in order to get to all the areas of a mission. Playingin Freeplay mode gives you the ability to use characters you werentable to use in Story mode. You have the ability to change thescenes from the movie and can actually make Boba Fett fight himself during Episode V.

S p e c i a l A b i l i t i e sAlmost every character that you can use in the game has somespecial ability that will be very useful as you play. Some characterscan use the Force to move or open objects, some can hoverthrough the air over long distances, some have special tools orweapons you need, and some have greater jumping abilities to getto higher places. As you play, you will need to use all the specialabilities of your team of LEGO characters to complete the game inFreeplay mode.

Ascension GunAll characters who use sometype of blaster weapon alsocarry an ascension gun withthem. As you travel through-out the chapters of LEGOStar Wars II, be on the lookout for red circle swirlson the ground. Each swirlhas a corresponding hooksomewhere nearby. If you seea hook on a level, you know that a red circle swirl is probably hidden

somewhere close. To use this special ability, stand on the red circleswirl and fire your ascension gun to go for a ride to a locationthats otherwise inaccessible. The ascension gun lets you grappleup to hard-to-reach places, or it can be used to swing across dangerous areas.

Thermal DetonatorOne of the bounty huntersmost powerful special abilitiesis his thermal detonator. Tossthis device at your target, and then move away. After afew seconds, the detonatorexplodes, destroying objectsaround it. Although yourregular blaster fire justbounces off the shiny metalLEGO objects found around the galaxy, the thermal detonatorblasts them to pieces. This weapon helps you uncover hiddengoods and get to new places.

Travel ChutesThroughout the missions, you will find small chutes insome walls. Most charactersare too big to use the chutes, but a few are just smallenough to fit. Use a smallcharacter, such as a Jawa orUgnaught, to jump into thechute and travel to the chutesend. These chutes lead toplaces that are otherwise impossible to reach, and can reward youwith many valuables.

HoverA few characters in the game have to ability to hover through the air for acertain amount of time. Theastromech droid, R2-D2, andthe bounty hunter, BobaFett, both have this specialability. They can fly throughthe air across an area, butcannot ascend any higherthan the level where they started. These characters are crucial tofinding many hard-to-reach items and areas during your missions. If you see an object that is floating out in space just out of reach, send one of these characters to fly out and get it. The hover abilityonly lasts for a little while, though, so get what you want andreturn to safety before you drop from the sky.

i

GGAALLAAXXYYBASICSG a m e M o d e s

Protected by copyright. For those characterswho can still wield its power, the Force is a strong weaponand tool in the Star Warsuniverse. Those who use thispower for good are known asthe Jedi, and include characters such as Obi-Wan Kenobi and LukeSkywalker.
