Guest Speaker: Tom Turpin“The New Good Old Days” :
Things have changed a bit since Professor Turpin grew up on a Kansas farm in the ‘50’s.Relive those days when outhouses, ‘coon hunting, telephone party lines, and
school consolidations were a way of life.We may not want to go back to those “Good Old Days”
but they did have their good (and funny) points.
Tom Turpin is a Purdue University professor of entomology and Cooperative ExtensionService entomologist. Turpin created “Bug Bowl” in 1990 to demonstrated insect mobility
to his students; the annual event, now part of Purdue Spring Fest, attracts more than25,000 people as well as worldwide media attention. A popular speaker, he gives
presentations on a variety of agricultural-related topics to audiences of all ages and has beenfeatured in national magazines, on network television shows, and talk and call-in radio
programs. A dedicated teacher, he has received numerous teaching honors,including Purdue’s top undergraduate teaching award. In 2008 Turpin was named therecipient of the Hovde Award for service to the people of Indiana. He is the author of
numerous scientific papers, a textbook, and a popular book about insects called,Flies in the Face of Fashion, Mites Make Right, and Other Bugdacious Tales.
