LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Vision

The setting: a war waged on a battlefield during 100

plus degree weather. There are casualties. Seeing those closest to you torn from your side and

fatigued by hunger and thirst, vision is one of the first

things lost after carrying 50-pound armor for days.

Despite the will to press on, your handicap keeps

you doing nothing more than shooting into the abyss with the sole hope of hitting a target. You need a

moment to stop, close your eyes and regroup. In

that moment, breathing slows. The sound of gunfire

and explosions fade, you hear your own heartbeat.

Your eye open and where there was haze there is now clarity. The iris focuses and the future is clear.

The inspiration for this issue comes from the ever-

growing pop culture forged in our community for the

past 10 years ushered in by two revolutionaries. I gave Scharad Lightbourne and Farreno Ferguson the

concept, ‘Legends of the Fall’, and they ran with it as

displayed on the cover shot by Donald Knowles. I’d

like to send a special thanks to the flight attendants

Erinn and De’Anna, , and the STYLEZINE team for pushing for perfection.

The vision is clear.

POWER TO THE PEOPLEI have never been more proud of my Bahamian artists. We are truly the next generation to break grounds in the Bahamian industry. Not only are we raising the bar and setting standards, we are laying the foundation for others to come up. People like TaDa, have worked so hard to take things to another level and shown that it not only takes talent, but heart and passion as well. Scharad and Farreno, need not say no more, your work speaks for itself. Its evident by the amount of young upcoming photographers that you guys are doing something right! Kareem Mortimer and Maria Govan are just blowing up the Bahamian film industry. BeTV

VISUAL VOCABULARYEverywhere you go in this town we call Nassau, you see ladies rockin' the same clothes. What ever happened to individual style? When did the boundary between fash ion & s ty le become blurred, so much in fact that now only 'fashion' d ictates what 's sty l ish & i n d i v i d u a l s t y l e i s n o t recognized as 'fashion'? In place of style we have slowly

started to honor Fashion Merchandise. What looks good and works for her, may not look good and work for you.

Style on the other hand, doesn't need a rack, it thrives on individuality, courage & creativity. This is what people really go for when they aspire to be fashionable, they're showing they aren't just part of an assembly line, it's all about making an outfit work for them.

Wardrobe should be our visual vocabulary, how we speak to others before we even speak. So, what does it say about you, when you look like everyone else? You know, as Bahamian women we are blessed with curves, some more than most. So, those fashionable skinny jeans might not work for your

bahama mama butt, or that designer halter top might make those bahama boobies look more like cannon balls in a sling. So, the next time you're out shopping truly think about your individuality, what works for you and what you can make work, instead of letting fashion & merchandising dictate what y o u s h o u l d w e a r . . . J u s t something to think about.Tara Genea, BAH

SUN SAND AND SEAA s a f a s h i o n , a r t , a n d entertainment enthusiast, I almost came to a point of despair in the local Bahamian market and its appeal and development. However, 2008 was a phenomenal year for Bahamian Entertainment, Art and Fashion and truly proved me wrong. I now have faith in

our market and in our local talent. For the first time ever I bought Bahamian art istsʼ albums! As a matter of fact, itʼs the first time that I have ever purchased an album! From Promise Riddim to Wolf, Be, a n d Ta d a , I L O V E M Y BAHAMIAN MUSIC!

Iʼm really proud of the talent here and in 2008 artists really took advantage of every opportunity to show it and I know this is just a sneak peak of whatʼs to come.

These are the days when you nod your head and recognize that beat by Frontline/Buffboo or Believe, the lyricist behind the mic is Wolf, and the teenage heartthrob is Sammie Starr. You know the voice of your in-your-face MC So$a, vocals by Be and Tada, and that signature ʻArtovationʼ is Diplight Media. No imitations of American artists and remakes that only sound worse or any “wanna-beʼs” of the sort…this is the real deal here. To all the artists and enthusiasts that are despaired or persistent, weʼre finally embracing the true quality and efforts of our own…shame on you if you didnʼt notice itʼs high time we showed our support. Finally, there is hope for our generation…thereʼs more to us than sun, sand and sea.

Your number one fan.Camille Kenny, BAH

EARN RESPECTEarning respect starts with self-respect. Here are some of the keys to keeping the balance.

Respect YourselfThereʼs no greater indicator of insecurity than self-disrespect. We all know about self-respect but self-disrespect is not staying on top of your game. Itʼs the lack of studying oneʼs craft, failure to research,

neglecting to rehearse and settling for mediocrity. Know your worth and appreciate it.

Donʼt put out to get in.People use people. Thatʼs just the way it is. The people who get used more are those who are so quick to give something up in order to fit into a particular circle. The problem is, however, once youʼve put out thereʼs no guarantee of getting in. No one wants s o m e o n e o r s o m e t h i n g associated with them thatʼs common, easily accessible, cheap. Common doesnʼt equal respect.

Stop Brown Nosing I r e a l l y w a n t e d t o s a y something else here but this is a family friendly magazine – so…I repeat, ʻStop brown nosing!ʼ Granted just about everyone has that little bit of ego that needs to be stroked, thereʼs absolutely no reason to have your head shoved so far up the nebulous crack of someone ʼs poster ior that people canʼt trust you. They give compliments not because theyʼre sincere, but because theyʼre expecting something out of the deal. People see straight through a fake. You may get ahead temporarily but stay there, you wonʼt.

Tell it like it isThis is no set up people. Really. When are we going to get to the point where we just say ʻthe hell with it!ʼ When are we going to just be honest with our ʻfriends ʼ , ʻassociates ʼ and ʻcolleaguesʼ and just tell it like it is? ʻThat hair color doesnʼt suit you, try another oneʼ, ʻthat photo isnʼt your best workʼ Or even the way producer Bigg E (Ian Cleare) asked me straight up, ʻWhy your voice sound like that in the songʼ? That was his polite way of saying he thought the vocals could use more work. If someone values your

opinion, itʼs always better to tell it like it is. That one simple concept earns you respect and believe it or not trust.

Do youItʼs okay to look at others for inspiration but in 2009, do you. Don ʼ t be a knock off o f someoneʼs style or personality. While it takes a while to refine all those layers of sheer brilliance, itʼs much easier to refine a natural diamond than it is to chemically create one which by the way is worth much less.Bodine Johnson, BAH

MALE STYLES RISINGIʼm growing weary of seeing dudes walking around, dressed the same as the next. Where is the individuality?! A while back, it seemed as though every Bahamian male wore the typical “Tommy” or “Polo” button down, khakis and “boat shoes”; that basically became a “Saturday outing” staple. I assume guys used this as a way to fit into our “macho d o m i n a t i n g ” s o c i e t y , f a s h i o n a b l y . A

revolution of male individual style and self-expression has arisen. Nowadays, itʼs actually cool for guys to change up their personal styles more than before. The key to it however is CONFIDENCE! There is a fine line between seeing a guy (the individual) first, with nice clothes on and seeing nice clothes on “whatʼs-his-face”. GET INTO IT— get creative; m i x p a t t e r s , co l o r s a n d t e x t u r e s . P u t o n s o m e sneakers with a suit, plaid shirt with striped pants, or even high-top sneakers with shorts. For heavenʼs sake, get rid that l a m e “ S a t u r d a y - o u t i n g ” uniform! “Style fills the gap between how you see yourself and how you want other people to see you” – Mike Piscitelli, Menʼs fashion designer. Now think about that! Linkages!Kedar Clarke, BAH

Jamal Smith, aka 29 year old, Smitty from The Country is not your average sneaker head. Being an 80ʼs baby I was raised in the Bahamas during a time when it was all about having the latest pair of Jordanʼs. Jordanʼs were l i k e t h e b i g g e s t t h i n g f o r youngsters, the only problem was there was not really much variety. You had to wait until it was time for the new ones to drop. Either take a trip all the way to Miami or spend hundreds at the Sports Center or Hoffers and Sons.

After gaining vast knowledge about sneakers from research online, conversing with friends who had similar interests and keeping in touch with former employees at Nike, I found joy in “putting on“ people to what was hot. I decided on doing a little bit of business myself and imported sneakers to the Bahamas. This was still not enough to fulfill my passion until I met magazine co-

creator of Stylezine ScharadL who encouraged me to expand to a larger audience so here I am putting on my KICKS.

Even as a toddler, Tony, 28, refused to go outside unless

he had a pair of shoes on, f uss i ng and c r y i ng un t i l

someone put his socks and shoes on him to make him feel complete. Tony's, obsession with dope kicks however, officially kicked off in 1992, the year his little brother received a pair of

Jordan's from his mom and he was "blessed" with and I quote " A n u g l y p a i r o f n o - n a m e Converse". From there Tony went head on into what could be described today as a healthy obsession with having Fresh kicks. Asked about his ongoing love-affair wiht sneakers Tony said " I look at my sneakers like I look at women, who wants to have the girl everbody else has or had? I feel the same way about my sneakers." It's that attitude that drives him to hunt releltlessly for sneakers the averavge man may never find or even may refuse to wear. His hunger for sneakers makes him a true Sneaker-Monster.

KICKS are the guide to lead the sneaker joneser through the maze of ordinary, plain and lukewarm sneakers into the treasure chest of Hot, Live and out of this world tennis. Yea people in other words sneaker crack for the shoe addicts.

S Cre8tive Recreation: Birthed in 2002, Creative Recreations three founders set out to create the perfect cross between athletic and dress shoes. The result was a cross-breed of sneaker-styles that slaps you across the face with freshness (kinda like Irish Spring for you're feet). Offering many styles with Italian inspired names and designs its no wonder "Recs" are hot on the heels of Supras as the sneaker choice for the in crowd. Featured is the Cesario-High, the most popular style offered. It comes in many unique color ways and combinations. They also put out many limited release color ways (such as the color way featured), that are sure to have you looking flyer than the rest of them.

Lanvin: This is for them dudes who REALLY want to set them as a cut above the rest. Lanvin Sneakers are the "sneaker-du-jour" of the stars with everyone from Kanye to Jay-Z to Usher wearing them. Lanvin, an old-school French brand decided to vamp

with flashy materials and metallic looks to create a sneaker that

Rugged enough to wear to places such as “The tracks” but still smooth enough to stunt at your uptown party or event. With Kanyeʼs increasing presence in the game and ever lasting groundbreaking moves in the fashion industry I can almost bet a conch snack that this shoe will evolve into some serious eye-candy.

Alessandro Dell' Acqua: One of the pre-imminent Italian fashion designers known the world over, Dell' Acqua brings the same vigor to his signature shoe and sneaker col lect ion. Luxurious and Eccentric are words to describe this sneaker collection that allows for a freedom of self-expression. They are sought after for style and comfort by all.

prices currently around $600 USD this shoe to a fly guy is likened to the latest Gucci or Louis Vutton bag for women. Very popular in the Asian market and making its way in the U.S. these sneakers were also made popular by music artist Kanye West in his music video “Stronger”. The shoe seems to be a take from the classic air force one highʼs with the patented leather (flow shine) Jordan material. The straps and t o n g u e h a v e b e e n exaggerated, which seems

to be the focal point of the shoe that sets them apart from the crowd. With the horizons of the younger generation of Bahamians being broadened this shoe might become infectious in t h e “ m o n o - s h o e ” A i r Jordan capital of the world known as the Bahamas.

Kanye West x Louis Vuitton: In a word...Sick. Kanye has teamed with the legendary brand to create a sneaker designed and inspired by Kanye himself. It is good to see he takes the same approach to sneaker design as he does to his music. Apart from a few shots of him wearing them in public and Kanye's remarks about the collabo, any other info on these bad-boys is strictly hush hush.

Sneaky Steve: Though there are tons of high-top white and blue sneakers out there, wear these and you're instantly "The Man". A Norwegian brand, Sneaky Steve is hard to locate outside of Europe. Good Luck finding a pair...

Supras originally “beamed out of space” as a “skateboarder” or “backpacker” shoe. A wide audience is surprisingly embracing usually huge conflicts with the traditional bad-boy gangster image of Bahamian youth the shoes. Following the same path as the ever-popular “Air Force Ones” these shoes are being predicted to replace them from the east, west, over-the-hill and everything in between. Sightings of the alien shoe have been at local clubs such as “Waterloo”, “Plush”, “Uptown”, and “Fluid”. The style of the shoe is a fusion of ar t is t ic flai r, skateboarding comfor t and now a bit more hood swagger (Yes the most o v e r u s e d cliché but it s e r v e s t h e p u r p o s e o f d e fi n i t i o n ) . Popularity of the shoe has b e e n attributed to r a p superstar “ L i l Wayne”, Jay-z etc. This shoe i s a l s o a f a v o r i t e o f yours truly who has a few on ice for that hype event.

FDOTH o w l o n g h a v e y o u b e e n d o i n g photography?

I’ve been at photography for close to 8 years now, got into it during my last years in high school .

What’s t h e experience like working under a future cacique award winner Donald Knowles?

Working under Donald has been fun from the first day we met when I started at The Nassau Guardian. He always showed me he was prepared to show me all he knew, and ever since we been down. He is def a great mentor and friend.

What was the name of the very first model that you ever shot?

My first solo shoot was with the lovely Sherice Major who has no blossomed into one of Nassau’s Top Models. I remember

STYLEZINE www.diplightmedia.com

how shy she was that day, we both were actually because it was our her 1st time and also mine.

With such longevity in the creative arts where do you still find motivation to continue to evolve? What's your staying power?

Well def I believe in what I do, and know that I have what it takes to make things

happen. Mama always said with God all things are possible, and that’s

what drives me day to day.

Your online video magazine E:Life 242 just went into hard copy. What's the origin behind the name and the concept?

The origin of the name eLIFE was kind of a play on the latest CD by favorite band M i n t C o n d i t i o n … s o I

grabbed it and put 242 on it to represent the ENTERTAINMENT

LIFE of the 242. Everything these days is entering the digital age, so

I’m capitalizing on that.

There has been countless comparisons between ScharadL and yourself from

inception. What makes your work different from Scharad?

I make my work different. Basically who am I determines my work, so me and Scharad’s work may be similar but the laws of nature will have it where it is never the same.

So straight up who’s better you or ScharadL?

Some days I am, Some days he is and some days the other photographers are. Visual arts are hard to place a best title on it, but we both doing it big and I think the general public is recognizing that.

Who is your greatest competition?

Competition !!! I mean I’m constantly evolving my thought process and workflow, so unless people out there plan on keeping up with my every thought I HAVE NO COMPETITION, except MYSELF !!!

Are there any other Bahamian artist you would like to collaborate with?

People out there have been calling me the Industry facilitator, which means there is not much I won’t help or collaborate on. So I am willing to collab with all once the project is right and its m u t u a l l y beneficial.

H o w d o

transferring y o u r knowledge and experience onto young up and coming artist? Do you have a protégé?

I have been transferring knowledge ever since I started this, I have to because people like Donald & David Knowles, Pat Hanna, Tim Aylen, Peter Ramsay and Derek Smith did the same for me, so I assist anyone with questions.

What will iKonz be in 2015?

iKonzMedia will be the company to watch, and by 2015 we hope to own the industry with our different offerings whether it be Videos, Magazines or Audio.

What's next for FDOT?

FDOT is a brand that I have developed and hope to see turn into a household name that becomes synonymous with good work. I want to keep doing what I do and not look back and mind the noise in the market.

If you could be doing anything besides photography right

now what would it be?

C h i l l i n g ! ! ! I ’ m a workaholic so when I

get a chance to b r e a k , I B R E A K HARD. I chill, hang out and just have fun, anyone who has been around me on a “chill session” knows how I go .

Being in the entertainment business does that automatically make you a socialite? How does Mrs. FDOT feel about that?

I am def a sociable guy, I like meeting people and learning about them. As an artist its good t o k n o w h o w other people see the world, because i t helps you to know how to structure a n y particular project to really grab t h e attention of t h e g e n . Public. At the moment there is no Official Mrs. FDOT but the c louds are clearing and there is a l i g h t b e a m i n g through LOL !!

Who is the most memorable model that you have ever shot? What was the experience like?

After shooting so many it’s hard to say who was the most memorable, but I have had fun with all of them and most of them turn into good friends. But all my Bahamian models were great to work with and the international models I have the opp to shoot

were all a blast and stay in contact with me via the web or phone.

As a forerunner in Artovation what do you feel is holding Bahamians back from that promised land of success?

WORK ETHIC & MIND SET are the biggest killers of the Bahamian Dream.. I feel we sometimes want things handed to us instantly. We want to ‘Be like Mike’ but not

ever get drafted and work our way to the top of the league.

So I feel once we c a n s h o w t h e

Who is on high rotation on your ipod?

Like I said Mint Condition is my favorite band, so I got every album from them on there, in addition to Anthony Hamilton. Still do my TOP 40, so the new Jeezy album, the new T. I. album and a lot others are on there, but I am fan of soul music, so I keep those in heavy rotation.

Who’s album will sell more Jay-z Blueprint 3 or Lil Wayne's The Carter 4?

That’s a toss up … but I would more than likely buy the BluePrint 3, Jay-Z’s music has more soul infusion which is more up my stream.

If you were on an episode of Room Raiders, what would we find in your room?

My Apple MacBook Pro, a host of hard drives, a television and bed. I also have probably the best collection of KING Magazines on the Island.

How do you like your women, chopped or screwed?

T h e s c r e w e d t h i n g s o u n d s m o r e appropriate, but I am a fan of beautiful women. All it takes is a great smile and a personality that matches to reel me in !!

What fast food franchise has made the most money off of you?

Not crazy on the fast food, but between KFC and Bamboo Shack they probably can write me a check for some stock dividends after the amount of money I throw down in there establishments.

Any final words?

There is nothing left to say except … Keeping doing you and reppin the 242 and the one thing you can be sure of is that FDOT and iKONZ Media will be here to bring it to you live and in living color.

< SCHARADL

SCHARADLHow is ScharadL different from the man in the mirror 2 years ago?

Well I think I have more of an appreciation for life and the family and friends that I’m blessed with. I love life in general, good people and I take nothing for granted, nothing! I’ve flushed out the bad habits and evil people. I don’t w a s t e t i m e w i t h i n s i g n i f i c a n t t h i n g s anymore. I’ve grown.

Y o u ’ r e a photographer, v ideographer and graphic artist. Which one is your true love?

I l o v e a n y t h i n g where I can be creative really, I’ve been artistic all my l i fe, d i v i n g i n t o d i f fe ren t a r t genres over the past years but I love photography the most right now because it allows me to completely turn a blank canvas into art. I love all those art forms you mentioned but photography is the girl I want to be with the most right now.

When did you know it was time to leave your job at The Counsellors to work on your own?

It was a long period of creative wrestling with higher powers, the need to be different and the box I was being confined to for a “creative” agency. What made it worse were haters and the immaturity level of

people who didn't want to see me advance. Mind you, there were a few that supported me but when my artistic, mental and creative abilities grew, I had to get out of that box.

state of the economy and the ‘changes’ that he will bring effect your freelance art form?

Well I don’t live or work in the US so I don’t think his new appointment will directly affect myself as a freelancer. The only real way I could see it affecting me is that the US economy improves leading to more people traveling, out of those persons traveling are couples getting married. Those destination

weddings are where the money is. That’s the only real way I can see it affecting me at this point right now.

What drives ScharadL?

I think if I could say anything about what drives me, I’d say me. I want to learn and accomplish so much while I can. I never want to stop doing what I do. I think my drive is like well oiled machinery. It keeps working. What pushes that are my influences, amazing friends, loving and supportive parents and an overflow of blessings. My grandmother, I love that woman so much, her passing in this world has made me want to prove so much more to myself. That’s powerful to say but if I believe it, I definitely can do it.

ADVERTISEIN STYLEZINE

There have been countless comparisons of your photography style to FDOT. What make you different and or similar to him?

I think we both love what we do and put time and effort into it, Its not about the girl in the bikini or how many hits we get online, its about the moment and brining this moment to the people, almost like we are disciples trying to bring food to those that want to be fed. If I had any thing that differentiates, I’d say personality. Someone told me that they made an analogy about “F” and me. they said, he is like P.Diddy and I’m like Jay-Z, both styles equally as big but definitely different in demeanor. I think that sums it up.

Straight up who’s better, you or FDOT?

You’ve got to support and believe in yourself before you can support and

Page 21: Legends of The Fall

believe in someone else. “Dot” is one of the few photographers on the island who I actually respect. Too many sheep out there, not enough shepherds.

Your photo shoots use to be over run by love and support from your Diplight Family. A s o f r e c e n t l y w h a t c a u s e d t h e disappearance of your supporting cast?

Over run is an interesting word. You make it sound like they were rats or something. That wasn’t the case. Well at first, it was good, I was new at this (photography) and I asked for help from partners and their close associates. It was great that we were helping one another out. My passion and discipline grew for the art itself and I think for others, it may have gone in a different direction.

P e r s o n a l i t y , schedules and interests grew a s w e l l . I t h i n k I realized that i t w a s n ’ t n e c e s s a r y a n y m o r e . Being in a professional environment, I understood that you have people for hair, m a k e u p , w a r d r o b e , l i g h t i n g , a r t direction but I was not on that level, so with those factors among others, things got downsized so that I could focus more.

It really made a difference but the love and support aspects never changed, just the capacity that it was displayed. You can’t forget where you came from or the people that helped you to get there.

You put on the Kinesis art show and had rave reviews. What was the reason that you put on a full sensory art show? How do you follow up a show that got you such critical acclaim?

I’d always wanted to do an art show but I needed a good reason to. After countless brainstorming sessions with family and close friends, I just decided that it was time to. From November of 2007, I’d been planning and planning, conceptual iz ing and creatively coming up with something Nassau had never seen before. My

upbringing and discipline for the arts made it

so stimulating in c o n c e p t

my mind, heart and soul on this

project. I use all my senses as an artist, so why not share that appreciation with the public? That’s what I wanted to give the people I wanted them to see, hear, smell, feel and taste. I wanted to give them an experience.

How do I follow up? I’ve got some projects in my head circulating around some others. Everyone is expecting another one, a “K2…(laughs). I guess once I filter them out, then the next stage begins. I don’t think it’s a matter of following up to what was done before. I think it’s the experience that you give people and how it ultimately affects them.

Who was y o u r

most

memorable person that you shot with for Kinesis? What was that experience like?

There is no doubt that my spokesperson Andre Chapelle was the most memorable. I had an out of body experience on the shoot, never before had I felt so in sync with the subject. I felt every shutter click, every breath of air that was made in the studio that day. The image that was used to promote Kinesis is one of those I think could not be bought. It is the BEST photography I’ve EVER done. I am NEVER going to have that experience ever again because something that I captured in that room will never be captured again.

Does it feel surreal to know that you and FDOT are looked at as the only options w h e n i t c o m e s t o h i g h f a s h i o n photography?

To be frank with you, we are not the only options because no matter how “big”

you get here in your own country, it’s the respect, support and financial

gain that are always hard to make equal. Everyone loves you but no one supports or respects you. They will say your name, add you to facebook, and myspace. They even text you to inquire about your packages but will they pay you what your work is worth, nah, they

neighbor o r l i t t l e b r o t h e r t o take the pics of them, post them online and call it photography. So when we become the “only” options for high fashion photography, and my income shows that, then maybe I’ll start feeling differently.

Page 23: Legends of The Fall

If you ran your own nightclub what type of music would you play and whom would you cater to?

Techno Music…duh! Jerks his head forward and makes a beat with his mouth “Dum! Dum! Dum! Dum!” I’d have the hottest dance tracks in the world and have the house remixes to all the hot Neo Bahamian songs playing. (Tada…get at me!)

You are a pretty stylish/trendy guy, what fashion/tech gear can’t you do without. Give me your top 5 gear fresh items.

1. My Ray Ban Aviators, 2. iPhone, 3. Ralph Lauren Polo Black 4. White V-neck5. Chuck Taylors.

Have you had any wardrobe malfunctions on any of your shoots?

Hey, they happen all the time. You learn to get use to it. It’s work so seeing body parts just becomes apart of the territory.

Who is the biggest star that you have worked with?

Without a doubt, Jeanene Fox, international supermodel. She’s been on every European magazine cover, Stuff Magazine, and others; she’s done the Super Bowl AXE commercial just last year. She was huge and yet so down to earth! She flew down here just to shoot with me for Kinesis, her piece titled “Va Bene Capitano” got rave reviews. Check out the video on youtube for yourself.

We know you must be getting A LOT of attention from the women, now more than ever. How is Scharad dealing with it especially with the added incentive, that being you’re single now.

(Scharad laughs) Nik, why you got to have my business out there man like facebook! Well…its different for me. I was never the popular kid in school but I’m holding my

STYLEZINE www.diplightmedia.com

real female friends dear to me right now, they keep me level headed.

If you were on an episode of MTV’s ‘NEXT’ what type of women would you be looking for?

Right now, my biggest turn on is an independent woman. That is SO sexy to me. I’ve learned from past relationships that this type of woman will complete you as a man; she will be the one to become your SUPPORT system. She’s intelligent, sensible and educated with tons of lady swag (coin that). She’s got to be in my dreams and not my nightmares…otherwise…NEXT!

Do you like your women stirred or shaken?

Shaken…who wants someone boring? I’m already corny and boring so there has to be a balance to make the relationship exciting. I love a woman who carries herself like a lady but can still bring out the “junglass” every now and then with her gun fingers in the air screaming “pull it, pull it!”

What’s next on the agenda for you and your company?

I think staying on the forefront of innovative ideas and concepts will remain the focus. We just relaunched diplightmeida.com. We’ve got all new photo series coming out like M.I and The Stylistics. STYLEZINE is bigger and better and maybe even a Kinesis 2?

What do you say to the haters and critics out there?

I understand why people choose to hate on me. Genuine people know who I really am. You need haters, it brings balance to your life, causes you to work harder. Get over it cause you’re not really that important in my life and if I see you in a public space, it’s no big deal for me to say “hi.”

So, the idea for Moda first came to

life when we were asked by ScharadL

to write the fashion column for

Stylezine. Stylezine? What’s that? It

didn’t matter…he had us at the word

“fashion”. Not until our initial

meeting did we fully understand what

the magazine was about and were

thrilled to be a part of it. Before we

could begin, we had to come up with

a name. “Moda”, being the Italian

word for fashion and knowing our

love for the industry…we couldn’t

think of a better name.

Our task? Provide our readers with

an overview of Spring 2009 fashion

trends from our point of view.

This season offers infinite wardrobe

possibilities. On the runways, we are

seeing a myriad of trends. Beige has

become the new black, bright colors

like oranges and pinks are stark

contrasts to beige, classics like LBD’s

(little black dresses) are modernized

with different textures and styles, and

what better way to say “spring” than

with a beautiful, bold pattern? When

it comes to everything else (the etc

of an outfit), that is the accessories…

shoes are getting higher, bags are

getting smaller and jewelry is as

chunky (and funky) as ever.

With all of these choices, fashion

mavens will have to look no further

than their already jam-packed closets

to try any one of these styles. This

season is all about experimentation---

with colors, textures, patterns and

with old styles that are making a

comeback (say hi to the return of

retro!). Simple (and cheap) pieces

can be added to an ordinary outfit,

instantly creating “of the moment”

appeal. This is great, because you

won’t have to spend a lot of money

to achieve this- hey we’re in the midst

of a recession—every dollar has to

be stretched as far as it can go!

Luckily, we have combed the retail

stores in Nassau to find that many of

them offer high-end, one of a kind

pieces at affordable prices; perfect for

the season. Most notably, Final

Accents, PrimaDona and Head over

Heels will be sure to have you

looking your best for the season, no

matter the occasion.

Ladies, no longer should neutrals be considered a “base” color in an outfit. We’re sure most women have a few pieces that they are tired of wearing. Maybe it’s that traditional beige suit for work or perhaps it’s a neutral colored party dress that you’ve never been a fan of because you think is too “bland”. Pull them out of your closet and dust them off. Make them the driving force in your outfit. Is an overall neutral look not your thing? No problem. Any one of these subdue pieces can be instantly revamped with a splash of color. Take that beige suit, lose the jacket, add a colorful scarf, jewelry and large sunglasses and become a modern “Jackie-O”. Or, jazz up that plain satin dress with a few colorful bangles for a chic fashionista look.

Because it’s all about the clothes, accessories should be subdued. Some Bahamian women are famous (or infamous) for matching their hair to their blouse to their earrings to their necklace to their bracelets to their bag to their shoes. This is not fashionable! Please do not do this—the “matchy, matchy” look has never been in style and hopefully (we really hope) will never be in style. R e m e m b e r, s o m e t i m e s subtlety is key when it comes to wearing bright colours…let one thing be the “stand out” in your outfit, and everything else should compliment it. No one wants to see a big orange traffic cone walking towards them *cringe*. Too much of anything is not a good thing!

For those of you who have had those retro looks stored in your closet, hoping to one day pull them out again, tis’ the season! Retro is back for spring, giving the traditional floral or pattern new life with its funky colors and fun patterns. Again, subtlety is key when wearing something like this. Let the outfit speak for itself and keep all other elements to a minimum. Remember that the must have accessory for this outfit is a fun and quirky attitude!

“Remember, sometimes subtlety is key when it comes to wearing bright colors.”

Page 27: Legends of The Fall

Another trend returning this season (and every season really) is the LBD. Every

fashionista has one or two of these dresses stored in their closet and

can pull these out at the sign of the first party invite.

For spring, how about jazz ing up an old

c l a s s i c w i t h a different texture ( tr y a rouched fabric) or add a t o u c h o f sophistication with a f a s h i o n a b l e hairpiece. Color can also work well

with the LBD. Try a neon clutch or shoe

that will have all eyes on you when you step

out on the town.

What woman didn’t watch the Sex and the City movie mainly to see what fabulous shoe Carrie was running around NYC in? The higher the shoe, the better! Well, this might not always be the case, but the shoes we’ve seen this season are all incredibly high and all incredibly chic! Try a strappy heel in a neon color, or a fun wedge in classic red. Whatever the shoe, remember that it is not necessary for a shoe to match every color in your outfit…in fact it can be the standout piece in a look- we love that!

ACCESSORIES

The same goes for a bag. The clutch is uber popular this season, and they have gotten even smaller- stark contrast

from the higher heel. Women, stop carrying large day bags to the club! It’s not necessary, and is just annoying when someone bumps into the large laptop case on your shoulder! Choose a clutch with a textured material, like python or snakeskin (faux of course—we’re animal friendly too)! Even better, a straw clutch is very chic and very Bahamian- support your own!

With all of the trends that we have discussed this season, remember…they do not all have to be worn at the same time! Please do not let us see you rocking every single trend in one o u t fi t — i t ’ s n o t n e c e s s a r y. G i ve yourself options and do not wear all of your statement pieces at once. This limits the amount of wardrobe possibilities you have. In case you haven’t gotten it, concentrate on one or two hot trends at a time!

C h o o s e w h a t wo r k s f o r you….not all women are fans of neon colors and sky- high heels. Take whatever trend you’re most comfortable with and use them to play up your best features. We’re not trying to make all of our readers dress the same--- in fact we would hate that. We are here to provide our look at the hottest trends for each season and show women that there are many stores in Nassau to find them.

Remember that ill fitting clothes are NEVER in style…no matter “how of the moment” a trend can be…..if you’re not comfortable in it...do not wear it. Whatever trend is your favorite (we personally love all), become a walking ad for confidence and sophistication- that never goes out of style! Scharad, task completed!

T A R A & K R I S T I N A A R E

Surprising trend on the runways for spring is the red lip. Be it matte or glossy, crimson or cherry, rouge is no longer confined to fall. Pair with a LIGHT bronzer for a healthy glow. When doing a red lip, don’t forget to line them first. Properly lined lips will last longer with fewer touch ups throughout the day.

Divas, don’t put away those smudge brushes yet, the smoky eye is here to stay! This season leaves the dark shadows behind, substituting them for softer, more ethereal colors. Browns and golds are the colors of choice; pair it with a matching eyeliner, for a dramatic, but soft effect.

Peach is the new “go to” color for cheeks. This gives the illusion of looking made up, without becoming an abusive bronzer. Ladies, on that note, go easy on the blush, as peach tends to be a highly pigmented color. You want to look sun-kissed, not sun-burnt.

Bye Bye Bronzer!

GIORGIO DEFINESswagger

I’m not an artist or a designer, but I aspire to be a part of a movement

that will take men far beyond the Bahamian male mentality. You see, my

persona has always been less buying out the bar and more owning the

club. Fashion is the most unrecognized art form locally. What you wear

should equate to who you are, what

you stand for and should be an

expression of you as an individual. Judging the current scene, I hope not.

When I got dressed in 2003, it was

basically the same thing my uncle

wore in ’95. What’s wrong with it is

my little brother wants to wear the

same thing in 2009!

I think the w o r s t

compliment I ever got was from my

ex-girl’s best friend who said that I

always looked nice because I could

match. Albeit she was thoughtful,

I took that comment as a blatant

double entendre. Since then, I

started to experiment with clothing brands outside local

malls and the usual department

stores in the state of Florida. My

styles are tailored, belt free and

suspend from my shoulders via

braces! Seriously though, “style” is

j u s t t h a t … u n i q u e, i n n o v a t i ve,

insightful and...PHRESH! Today, I’m

more debonair than I was yesterday

however not nearly as FLY as I will be tomorrow……..now THAT’s PHRESH!

Swagger is like an all access pass to phresh. Being phresh doesn’t mean that you are the phreshest. Breaking it down further I mean you don’t have to be wearing a new shirt to be phresh. If you have swagger you have the ability to make a simple one colour t-shirt look like a $200 designer shirt.

Just because you ordered some expensive clothes online doesn’t mean you automatically have swagger.

Swagger, it isn’t the clothes you wear, the jewellery you own, the car you drive or even the car your parents drive (jokes). You are your swagger. The clothes don’t make the man, the man makes the clothes. When your presence is felt in a room shortly after you walk in and have not said a word, that’s swagger! When you have this magical aura that draws people to want to be around you, that’s swagger. When people go out of their way to get to know you, that’s swagger.

Their presence is so strong you can’t help but notice them; their personality is so infectious you either love them or love to hate them. Swag doesn’t have an age limit. My father’s swag is so m e a n I h a v e j a c k h i m sometimes literally the 50 something year old swag is still in effect today. However let’s take it even further back so I can really school ya’ll on the origins of swagger, to the man who invented swagger. Jesus Christ! The man’s presence was so overwhelming that he drew in nations to hear him speak. Think about it and don’t let it fly over your head.

“Just because you

ordered expensive

clothes online

doesn’t mean you

automatically have

swagger.”

S o m e t h i n g s should be made off icial , others should be made extinct. What’s right in and what should be left out!

A. Rosar ies…Right In !

Okay, so you might not

know how many Hail

Mary’s to recite but

now you have an

excuse when tipsy off

the Jesus juice. Amen

to that!

If stylezine is my podium for Phresh then call me Barack!! If I don’t have the title for best dressed straight man on the island cheaper you don’t read the rest of what I have to say. I am Giorgio Knowles, an avid reader of the Life Book Called Phresh. What is the life book called phresh? Every time I step out the house I start opening the pages reading a new chapter observing everyone and every th ing they are wear ing . Sometimes I find pages that are interesting most of the time its just the same old page from the day before (polo hat, polo shirt). I always wondered if style was a talent that God had given me because I mean how could I consider that a talent it’s just putting on clothes right? But some people put on clothes, and some people get dressed.

At 22, what certifies me, Muff, to write this article is the fact that I pay homage to the adage, “The more you know, the more you realize you know nothing at all.” As I take my maiden voyage as a contributor to Stylezine, I think we should build our foundation on some of the necessities. Ladies, you also need to take heed because he is a representation of you. If you’re offended, it’s probably because I’m talking about you. In which case, I have no apologies.

STYLEZINE www.diplightmedia.com

Page 31: Legends of The Fall

‣ Style – It is a qualitative art because it is interpreted differently by each individual. Let’s delete the

thought that dressing different means you’re gay. Think about it. The girl you’re

trying to get caught your eye because she stood out, shouldn’t you do the same? If someone says you’re gay, they’re actually upset

because you look different than them. In which case, they’re actually ‘liking man’ seeing they want you to look like them.

‣ Male Fashion in Nassau - Allow me to dumb it down. An oversized polo shirt, baggy jeans and boat shoes/Clarks is NOT dressing up. If you think about it, it’s been a staple in our society since ’95. It’s seriously time for a change. Don’t believe me. Walk into any high school party (esp. private school) and look at every young man equipped with the above accessorized with a matching hat, gold chain and Techno Marine. Our female counterparts evolve

every year or so like clock work, we’ve got some catching up to do.

‣ Moderation- Anything in excess is a bad thing. Too tight denotes you might be European, a suspect character or both. Too baggy means you’re stuck in 2001, you borrowed it or you are very fond of

looking like a bedspread. The key is being versatile which can result in you attracting all of the right attention and

respect. All ladies want a man who’s a gentleman but has that rough edge.

‣ Individualism- Truth be told, no matter how stylish you think you are haters exist!

However, pleasing them should never be your focus. It’s all about being you. There are basic principles but

rules were meant to be broken. Try to personalize fashion trends. If you

completely replicate trends, sooner or later people will realize you have no true

identity. On top of that, even your friends will make fun of it behind your back. Trust me! Offend someone every now and then, it’s a great feeling!

‣ Evolution – Represent yourself ! However, I prefer not to see my 40 year old father in an Ed Hardy tee and slim jeans. In other words, as you

grow older you are required to mature. So the next time you approach a female and she ignores you, check yourself ! It might be that she judged the book by the cover and from what she saw; she isn’t interested in the pages. But, be careful not to apply any lotion (sidebar: stop lotioning these gals’ is on the way)!
