The District of Columbia's Department ofGeneral Services fell victim to a scam in Julywhen officials there wired almost $700,000 toa hacker posing as a city vendor. The fraudstersgained information from a vendor's computersystem, reported The Washington Post, thencreated a fake email address by changing justone letter, from which they requested electronictransfers from the D.C. government. DavidUmansky, a spokesman for the district's chieffinancial officer, told the Post that since then thecity's protocols for making vendor paymentshave "been modifiedto require additionalconfirmation beforechanging bankinformation." Noneof D.C.'s .money hasbeen recovered.
