Communication Skills are Half the
Battle in Job InterviewsBy Billie Watkins
Billie Watkins is the Chicago branch manager of Robert Half Legal, a leading staffing service specializing in
the placement of attorneys, paralegals, legal administrators and other legal professionals with law firms andcorporate legal departments. Based in Menlo Park, Calif., Robert Half Legal has offices in major cities
throughout the United States and Canada. For more information, visitwww.roberthalflegal.com.
How you perform in job interviews is an especially critical determining factor today in whether you are
tendered an offer of employment. Even candidates who perform well on the first interview must now be
prepared to go several rounds to prove they are strong contenders. Attorneys surveyed by Robert Half Legal
said that, on average, they interview candidates four times before extending an employment offer.
Effective communication skills are increasingly critical in the eyes of hiring managers. As a result, the skill
with which you communicate in an interview can make the difference in whether you land the job or not. The
following tips can help you present yourself and your credentials in the best possible light.
Give substantive answers. In every interview, answer questions in a factual, sincere manner and provide
specific examples that illustrate your skills and expertise. Giving sufficient detail doesn't mean you need to
over-answer, though. Avoid going off on tangents or talking about experiences that are not relevant to the
position at hand.
Practice your 'elevator pitch.'To ensure you make your main points regarding your abilities in a
straightforward manner, compose and thoroughly rehearse a two- or three-sentence summary of significant
professional achievements, qualifications and career goals. This will keep you from rambling or going off
track. Beyond this, be ready to explain your range of talents and why you are well-suited for this particular
position. It's also appropriate to discuss long-term career goals, particularly in terms of growth in
responsibility.
Pay attention. It's not at all unusual to be somewhat nervous during a job interview, but you'll need to be
relaxed enough to listen carefully to the interviewer's description of the position and pick up hints about the
firm's management style and culture. Job interviews should be considered two-way conversations in which
you'll gather as well as provide information so that you can better evaluate potential employment
opportunities.
Rehearse answers to common questions. Be prepared to answer common interview questions, such as
"What are your strengths," "What are your weaknesses," or "What interests you in our firm?" In addition,
think about how you might answer less standardized questions that tie into the position itself or your fit with
the organization's culture. Rehearsing answers in advance based on what you know from your research
about the firm can turn such questions into opportunities to showcase your skills and professional ambitions.
Project a professional demeanor. Maintain eye contact and speak with a confident voice. Judicious use of
body language - firmly shaking hands, sitting up straight and leaning slightly forward in the chair, for
example - convey enthusiasm as well as professionalism.
Don't be too enthusiastic. Take care that your upbeat attitude doesn't become excessive. Candidates who
answer every question with the same eager tone may come across as nave or unprofessional. It's
preferable to vary the tone of your answers - for example, speak enthusiastically about past achievements
and with a quieter sincerity about your interest in the firm and the contributions you will make.
Stay positive.Avoid making negative remarks about former employers and colleagues. Also steer clear of
self-deprecating comments-even those delivered in a humorous way-as these do not reinforce a
professional image or demonstrate competence.
Don't overstate your case. While it's important to give sufficient color to your accomplishments, avoid
sounding boastful or arrogant. And this should go without saying: Be truthful. Interviewers will discover
factual misrepresentations in the course of reference checking; therefore, it's critical you describe your
abilities and work history accurately.
Try not to become overly discouraged if an interview or series of interviews doesn't end in a job offer. The
people you meet during your job search can become valuable contacts in your professional network. The
interview process itself, meanwhile, will serve as a learning experience. You will perform more confidently in
subsequent interviews and ultimately obtain the position that suits you best.

4LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY
PEP TALK
By: Caren Mansfield, amember of the IllinoisParalegal Association
Yes, its nowFebruary. Its cold andlikely to stay that wayfor a while. The clothesare a little tight andexercise seems like anoption out of grasp. Just
want to stay in bed? Notreally that interested in
work or your paralegalcareer. Its that time of
year.As in any profession a
paralegal will have highsand lows in the career.Unless you are verylucky in the years of
working as a paralegal, you will have both.Right now it can seemthat you are in one ofthe lows. Its a com-bination of things thatcauses the lows. Jobstress is a big factor butso is lack of feeling asense of achievement, overload, burnout from
work and just gettingthrough the holidays, and just generally feel-ing yucky without feel-ing sick.
So whats a paralegalto do to regain thatsense of joy and accom-plishment at work.
First, you are justgoing to have to exer-cise. But remember, that does not mean youhave to put on your
workout clothes and goto the gym. Put on your
walking shoes and walkat lunch, walk on yourbreak, and take thestairs when you movefrom floor to floor in
your building. You willbe surprised how muchbetter you feel. Studieshave shown that even if
your exercise is in smallincrements its the totalthat counts.
Next, ask for morechallenging projects orif necessary, help withcurrent ones. Engaging
your brain is one of themost compelling ways toenergize. While you areat it, change the appear-ance of your cubicle oroffice. Read about fengshui and realize thatthose boxes sitting in
your office and all theclutter does make youfeel foggy and less pro-ductive. Figure out howto re-arrange to make a
flow and clear yourbrain.
In this economy itmay not make the bestsense to make a jobchange but you canalways ask to help out inareas you are not famil-iar with to stretch your
wings a bit. Another way to
change your perspective
is just go stand in thesun. Yes, it is anothermedical fact that winterblues can have a root ina lack of vitamin D.While it seemed likethere was no sun for a
while, get out on asunny, clear day and
walk around the block. You are killing two birds
with one stone. Exercise
and vitamin D.Multitasking is some-thing that paralegals justdo well!
You are normal if youhave the low periods in
your career. Justremember that they willpass even as the highpoints do too. It is notso bad to sometimesplod along on an even
keel. So before youabandon your positionor your career whenexperiencing a low peri-od take a step back toreflect objectively.Walk, get in the sun andget back on track. Ihope you all experiencemore of those highpoints in your careerthan the low ones.
