ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Metro Tunnel Project recognises the importance Victorians place on civic artworks and quality design. As part of a commitment to delivering infrastructure of the highest quality, the project is commissioning permanent artworks that will be installed in the Metro Tunnel’s five new underground stations.

The Metro Tunnel Legacy Artwork Program will provide world-class public art experiences for visitors and users of the Metro Tunnel, and ensure the legacy artwork, sculptures and other pieces installed in the new stations and tunnel entrances enhance our city’s reputation as Australia’s cultural capital.

These principles underpin the program:

+ Balance the cultural character of Melbourne with the distinct identities of each place.

+ Celebrate new infrastructure and spaces.

+ Contribute to Melbourne’s reputation for arts and design excellence.

+ Help orientate travellers as they navigate the transportation system.

METRO TUNNEL CREATIVE STRATEGY

The Metro Tunnel Creative Strategy guides the delivery of creative works undertaken as part of the Metro Tunnel Project.

The strategy supports the Legacy Artwork Program, as well as the Metro Tunnel Creative Program, a program of temporary creative works that is helping ensure Melbourne remains a vibrant and attractive destination for locals, visitors, tourists and event goers during construction of Victoria’s biggest ever public transport project.

ARTWORK LOCATIONS

Six major works will be commissioned, including five works for the new underground stations at North Melbourne (near Arden Street), Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac, and one line-wide commission that spans all five stations.

The artworks will complement the station architecture, creating a sense of place and identity for each of the station precincts, while creating new landmarks for the city.

THEMES

There are three main themes for the legacy artwork:

STORYTELLING

Invites artists to consider and explore people and place, celebrate the contemporary stories of everyday Melbourne, and look to new generations and possible future stories.

MOVEMENT, REPETITION AND TIME

Artists are encouraged to explore ideas that relate to commuting, underground rail networks, urban transportation, and the mass transit experience of travellers.

THE ENVIRONMENT AND BIOPHILIC DESIGN

Bringing nature down and into the metro system, opening up the opportunity to connect with nature daily.

Each piece of permanent art will have distinct links to the area’s character and heritage, helping create a sense of place and identity for each of the station precincts. To achieve this, a local context will be applied to each piece of legacy artwork:

North MelbourneA new precinct: a shot of new energy, a rallying point, a new spark.

ParkvilleA place of knowledge and learning, care and wellbeing.

State LibraryA meeting place of ideas and knowledge exchange.

Town HallA cultural sentinel at the heart of the city.

AnzacCity gateway and parkland link. Monuments and memories.

Line-wideA celebration, a connection to country, a welcome.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES

A local, national and international search is underway for artists, painters and sculptors to create permanent public art for Melbourne’s new Metro Tunnel stations.

A mix of Victorian, national, international and Indigenous artists will be commissioned, either via expressions of interest or by invitation, to create iconic artworks that will complement the architectural design of the stations.

+ Commissions for North Melbourne and State Library Stations are via an open call for expressions of interest.

+ Commissions for Parkville and Anzac Stations are invited proposals. The Town Hall Station commission will be via direct invitation to interview.

+ The Line-wide commission is a call for Aboriginal artists only to submit an expression of interest.

The artists selected will have the opportunity to work with the Metro Tunnel Project contractor design and architectural teams to ensure their creations are embedded in the station design, setting a new benchmark in public transport infrastructure.

A highly-credentialed panel has been appointed to help select the artists who will create the legacy art. The panel includes:

Professor Donald BatesDirector of LAB Architecture Studio, Lead Architect of Federation Square and Associate Dean (Engagement) and Chair of Architectural Design at The University of Melbourne

Max DelanyCEO and Artistic Director of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art; and Adjunct Associate Professor, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, Monash University

Professor Natalie KingProminent Victorian curator with over two decades of experience in international contemporary art; Enterprise Professorial Fellow, Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne

A senior Victorian Indigenous curator is also on the panel, whose practise focuses on South Eastern Aboriginal arts and culture.

Two members from Rail Projects Victoria, one from Creative Victoria and one from the Office of the Victorian Government Architect are also represented on the panel.
