The Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The Examiner, is pleased to present the 2010 edition of the Lee’s Summit Health Care Directory. Stress is a part of life, but the healthier you are, the better able you are to manage stress when it happens. Chronic stress can impact your immune system, which lowers your resistance to getting sick. Approaching stress management from a wellness lifestyle approach can give you “money in the bank” when it comes to preventing stress, and can give you the energy you need to handle stress when it happens. The following components are part of a wellness lifestyle approach.

Attitude: The way you think about things can make all the difference in how you react to events.

Health Eating: Good nutrition and healthy eating habits can help you through your stressful times now, not just prevent a heart attack 30 years down the road. Eating well will increase your physical, mental, and emotional stamina. Fueling yourself with nutrient dense foods can boost your immune system, help you maintain a healthy weight and help you feel better about yourself.

Physical Activity: Physical activity provides immediate stress relief as well as long-term stress management. Just 20-30

minutes of walking a day, for example, can give you more energy, help you put things in perspective, improve your sleep, sharpen your mental productivity, and boost your self-confidence. Our bodies are made to move and everyone can find some type of activity that is enjoyable.

Relaxing Your Mind and Body: There are a number of relaxation techniques that can help you manage stress and also improve your concentration, productivity and personal overall well-being.

Sleep: Consistent sleep is critical for a healthy life. Although we all need varying amounts of sleep, if we do not

to managing stressget enough sleep, everything from our immune system to our ability to learn and remember information will be negatively affected. Sleep is as important as nutrition and exercise when preparing for peak performance.

Healthy Relationships: Changes in relationships can be a source of stress as can feeling socially isolated. At the same time, talking with a supportive friend or family member can be helpful in coping with stress.

Time Management: Sometimes all the things we have to do can seem overwhelming and impossible to accomplish. Learning how to be a good time manager is a skill that you can use throughout your life, which can make work, play and studying more manageable, more productive and less stressful.

Alcohol and Other Drugs: Alcohol and other drug use can lead

to many problems that can add stress to our lives. High-risk use can lead to poor decision-making, impaired abstract thinking, injury and legal problems.

Tobacco: Tobacco can impact your sleep, ability to fight infection and overall health. These issues can create stressful situations. Tobacco use by some, however, is seen as a stress reducer. In order to achieve a healthy lifestyle, it is important to learn strategies to deal with stressors and to understand that quitting tobacco use takes time and practice.

Spirituality: Spirituality means finding personal meaning in your life; it doesn’t mean just following a particular religious dogma. Exploring spirituality may be helpful in managing stress.

The two most common kinds of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. (Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 90 percent of all skin cancers in the United States. It is a slow-growing cancer that seldom spreads to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma also rarely spreads, but it does so more often than basal cell carcinoma. However, it is important that skin cancers be found and treated early because they can invade and destroy nearby tissue.

Both basal and squamous cell cancers are found mainly on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun.

Symptoms The most common warning sign of skin cancer

is a change on the skin, especially a new growth or a sore that doesn’t heal. Skin cancers don’t all look the same. For example, the cancer may start as a small, smooth, shiny, pale, or waxy lump. Or it can appear as a firm red lump. Sometimes, the lump bleeds or develops a crust. Skin cancer can also start as a flat, red spot that is rough, dry, or scaly.

Diagnosis Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell

carcinoma are generally diagnosed and treated in the same way. When an area of skin does not look normal, the doctor may remove all or part of the growth. This is called a biopsy. To check for cancer cells, the tissue is examined under a microscope by a pathologist or a dermatologist. A biopsy is the only sure way to tell if the problem is cancer.

Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. It is the No. 3 cause of death in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it starts to die. Stroke can be caused either by a clot obstructing the flow of blood to the brain (called an ischemic stroke) or by a blood vessel rupturing and preventing blood flow to the brain (called a hemorrhagic stroke)

When someone has shown symptoms of a stroke or a TIA (transient ischemic attack or mini stroke), a doctor will gather information and make a diagnosis. Because the types of stroke are different, the treatments for acute management and prevention are different. The brain is an

extremely complex organ that controls various body functions. If a stroke occurs and blood flow can’t reach the region that controls a particular body function, that part of the body won’t work as it should. Symptoms include SUDDEN:

• numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; • confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; • trouble seeing in one or both eyes; • trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination;• severe headache with no known cause.

Risk factors include: cholesterol disorders, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, physical inactivity, and being overweight or obese. If you’re having any of the stroke warning signs, call 911 and go to a designated stroke center hospital.

Recognizing strokes

Choosing a physician for your family can be a daunting task. Your selection may be governed to a certain degree by your health insurance. But even within those limitations, you will find that you have many choices. Your best strategy is to start looking for a family physician before you need one. Don’t wait until you are in urgent need of that appointment.

WHERE DO I START?You need to consider a variety of

factors before settling upon a physician to care for your health. Here are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself:

• What medical specialty are you looking for? You need to be aware of which specialty is most appropriate for your situation. For example, if you are looking for a family doctor, would you prefer an Internal Medicine physician, a Family Practice doctor, or a Pediatrician?

• Is location important? Do you need an office location that is close to home, close to work, or on the way to day care?

• Are office hours important? Do you need an office with evening and/or weekend hours?

• Is experience important to you?

What about familiarity with the latest treatments? Educational background?

• Are you more comfortable being examined by a male or a female physician? Does it matter to you?

• Do you prefer a large practice or one with just one or two physicians?

• What sort of personality are you comfortable with? Do you prefer to be an active participant in your own health care? Does the doctor inspire your trust, and do you feel comfortable with him/her? Do you communicate well with each other when you talk?

Choosing a physician is an important and personal decision with financial implications. Don’t be afraid to interview the physician’s staff and the physician. Make an initial consultation appointment to discuss your health care concerns with your potential physician. Be aware, this initial consultation may not be covered by your insurance. Be sure to check with your insurer first.

More than 350,000 die from sudden cardiac arrest each year. In the U.S., sudden cardiac death in athletes occurs most predominantly between 15-25 years of age during an organized sporting event and at the prime of an athlete’s zealous participation. It can occur without prior warning symptoms and can happen to anyone, anyplace, at anytime. Ninety percent of sudden cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital setting and less than five percent will survive. For every 60 seconds that passes without defibrillation, overall survival decreases by 10 percent.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is unlike a heart attack where blood supply to the heart muscle is severely reduced or clogged. SCA is the malfunction of the electrical system of the heart, resulting in abrupt loss of normal heartbeat. Ventricular fibrillation is the most common life threatening heart rhythm associated with sudden cardiac arrest.

Early electrical defibrillation (shock) is the only effective treatment

for ventricular fibrillation. Portable Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) are designed for non-medical responders to treat ventricular fibrillation outside of a hospital setting. AEDs are a vital component to the “chain of survival”. An AED is a small lightweight portable device (laptop computer size), which automatically analyzes the heart rhythm when connected to electrodes, instructing the operator through voice prompting whether an electrical shock is needed.

AEDs and associated training belong where large numbers of people gather to work, learn, play and/or worship. They are a vital component to the “chain of survival”. Call 911, use CPR or chest compressions, defibrillate using an AED and get early advanced cardiac life support within minutes of collapse by trained/certified responders; a critical link to successful resuscitation in most cardiac arrests. Time is of the essence!

If you are unable to make decisions about your medical care, would your loved ones know how you want to spend the last days of your life, and be able to make difficult decisions about your treatment?

Talking to your family about the way you want to die or spend the last days of life is very personal and important. You have a right to accept and refuse medical treatments, including those that may prolong your life. Thinking about and expressing your wishes now about your end-of-life needs, will spare your loved ones the burden of uncertain decision-making during a difficult time. One way of formally documenting your wishes is an Advance Directive. You can name a person or persons whom you want to make health care decisions for you when you cannot. This person would be your durable power of attorney for health care decisions. The advance directive will help your doctors and loved ones understand your preferences.

The Advance Directive includes:

1. H e a l t h c a r e Directive which allows you to state your wishes regarding treatment that may prolong your life

2. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care Decisions that allows you to name a person to make health care decisions for you when you are unable to do so.

Living wills differ from Advance Directives. Living wills apply only when you are terminally ill; Health Care Directives become effective whenever you lose your ability to make and communicate decisions. An Advance Directive stays in effect until you die unless cancelled. Requirements to notarize advance directives vary from state to state. Missouri advance directives require notarization. Provide copies of your advance directive to your doctor, durable power of attorney for health care decisions, family, friends, and clergy. It is wise to keep copies available, especially when being admitted to the hospital and when traveling.

Remember, the greatest benefit of talking about your wishes and completing your advance directive is the peace of mind that you provide for those who love you. For further information:

Everyone seems to be on the search for the magic bullet or “super food” that will result in overall good health. You have seen the lists and the claims of what “super foods” can do for you, with the implication often being that when eaten you will become “super” healthy. These lists seem to be everywhere from magazines, television shows and of course the internet; varying in length, content and claims. There are, however, commonalities among most of these lists such as: berries, fish (often high in Omega 3 fatty acids), low-fat dairy products, nuts and fiber. If it sounds familiar to what the USDA has been saying recently…that’s because it is!

In 2005, the USDA developed “MyPyramid”, a new symbol and interactive food guidance system. The main message is to help Americans live longer, better and healthier lives. MyPyramid offers personalized eating plans and tools to help you reach your dietary and lifestyle goals. Since its inception, the website, www.mypyramid.gov has added many resources to enhance this personalized approach.

These tips and ideas from MyPyramid.gov are a starting point to a healthier you. You will find a wealth of suggestions here that can help you get started toward a healthy lifestyle. Choose a change that you can make today, and move toward a healthier you. Tips to help you:

• Make half your grains whole• Vary your vegetables• Focus on fruit• Get your calcium rich foods• Go lean with protein• Find your balance between food and physical activity• Keep food safe to eat

There is definitely evidence that certain foods have higher disease fighting properties than others and incorporating them into your diet will be of benefit to you. But, if the magic bullet or “super food” is what you’re looking for, your search will be long. The bottom line is that there is no miracle food that is going to have everything needed for good health. How you feel today, tomorrow, and in the future is all up to you and the food and activity choices you make…get started!

Dr. Matt Niewald was inducted as the 2010 President of the Missouri Dental Association. He was recently awarded the American Dental Association’s Golden Apple Award for New Dentist Legislative Leadership. He remains an advocate for organized dentistry. Dr. Niewald serves on the Missouri Dept. of Health and Senior Services Oral Health Advisory Group. He donates time to the UMKC Dental School and other philanthropic activities, including the Give Kids A Smile Program which provides free dental services to uninsured children. Dr. Niewald received his BA and DDS from the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 2001. Dr. Niewald maintains a General Dentistry Office, committed to providing comprehensive oral health care to patients of all ages in Lee’s Summit. He and his wife, Dr. Kristen Niewald (also a Lee’s Summit Dentist) have two sons Aidan and Ethan.

Dr. Lucido was raised in Chicago, Ill. She completed the BA/MD program at the University of Missouri - Kansas City obtaining both her undergraduate and medical degrees in six years. She moved to Minneapolis to complete her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. She was the Chief Medical Resident at the Minneapolis V.A. Medical Center, then completed a Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of Minnesota. During her fellowship, she spent a year performing research and training in Endoscopic Ultrasound. Dr. Totta was born and raised in the Kansas City area and graduated from Bishop O'Hara High School in 1987. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology at the University of Central Missouri, he entered Medical School at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience. He trained at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Internal Medicine, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. Amy Waller received her undergraduate from the University of Missouri-Columbia with honors and her masters degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City with honors. Amy has over 15 years of GI experience and is certified as a Clinical Specialist by the American Nurse Credentialing Center. She emphasizes wellness and self-care by giving patients the information they need to make healthy lifestyle choices and health care decisions. Dr. Dowd lived in Northern California for 22 years. He was raised in the small town of Sonoma (famous for its wines). After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California. Dr. Dowd earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1992. He then went on to Dallas, Texas for his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas, Southwestern at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Eric Roadman is a native of Lee's Summit and a graduate of Lee's Summit High School. He attended Truman State University in Kirksville, Mo. and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology while competing on the track team. He then went on to Chicago and completed his Doctor of Optometry at Illinois College of Optometry in 2000. While at ICO Eric received Marchon's Practice Management Award. Eric is a member of the American Optometric Association, Missouri Optometric Association and the Lee's Summit Chamber of Commerce. Eric enjoys tennis, golf, and competing in and training for triathlons.
