Welcome To Journalism Week 2013I’m so pleased to welcome you to Leeds Trinity University’s annual Journalism Week. Now in its fifth year, Journalism Week has become such a success that students are now guaranteed to hear from journalists from some of the leading broadcasters, newspapers, magazines and online.

Journalism is such a fantastic industry to be involved in. I’ve worked in the journalism and media industry for the majority of my working life, and I still find it rewarding, exciting and constantly evolving. I wholeheartedly support Journalism Week, which gives students access to a wide range of leading journalists each year. It’s so important for students to hear first-hand from journalists alongside their studies. It lets students gain a variety of industry perspectives, up-to-date insight on exciting industry developments, the challenges faced by journalists as well as tips for getting into the industry. There seems to me to be no better way to inspire students, and to help them to put their learning into the context of the journalism industry today.

Leeds Trinity University’s Centre for Journalism has an excellent reputationwithin the industry, and it’s evident that its students reap the success of this. On my first visit to Leeds Trinity University as Chancellor, I waslucky enough to spend time with a group of Journalism students whoworked together to interview me in the University’s TV studio and producea high quality news piece. I was so impressed with the students, who not only demonstrated their excellent journalism skills and expertise, but also their enthusiasm and dedication to pursue careers in journalism.I was also extremely impressed with the facilities available for the studentsto use, and the passion and expertise of the staff in the Centre for Journalism. With opportunities like Journalism Week, it’s no wonder Leeds Trinity boasts such an excellent track record of getting its students employed after University.

Journalism Week will run from Monday 25 February until Thursday 28 February, and I’d encourage all students to take full advantage of the brilliant opportunities on offer.

Gabby LoganChancellor Leeds Trinity University

We’ll be tweeting throughout Journalism Week from @journalismweek All participants, audience members and people following the week remotely are encouraged to tweet their questions and observations with the hashtag #ltjw and we’ll also be live blogging at www.journalismweek.co.uk
