1. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening

Darren from the abdominal aortic aneurysm screening programme came to speak to us. Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening is for men who are 65 years or older. Women are 6 times less likely to get Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm. This is why only men are tested. The aorta is a big blood vessel that takes blood from your heart around your body. As some people get older, the aorta can get weak and swell up. This sort of swelling is called an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The screening is a simple test called an ultrasound test. The test takes less than 10 minutes and does not hurt.

A cool jelly is put on your tummy and a small scanner is moved over your skin. The scanner shows a picture of your aorta on a screen.

4

You might need treatment if you have a large aneurysm. You will have more tests and possibly an operation. Only 1 in 100 men who are screened will have a large aneurysm.

1.5% of men will need advice because they have a small aneurysm. They will be seen at 6 months and 12 months and told about healthy living, stopping smoking and drinking less alcohol.

Your chance of having an aneurysm is more if; • you smoke • You have high blood pressure • Your brother, sister or parent

has had an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

There may be groups of men that do not get checked, for example men in prison.

The screening programme was set up in 2012.

5

Learning Disabilities or mental health problems are some of the people who might not get checked. Doctors do not always know if men have learning disabilities or mental health problems.

The screening service send out easy read appointment letters 3 or 4 weeks before an appointment. A week before the appointment they ask the doctors if the letter arrived and if the person needs any adjustments. For example, they could help with a hoist, let people have a practise go or offer more time.

Norman asked what reasonable adjustments are being made for people with learning disabilities.

Darren wanted to know how the screening programme can spread the word about the programme. Norman said that the GP lead might be able to help.

2. Dying Matters

2 workshops about dying have been completed at Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. Another workshop is going to be done to talk about getting ready for dying.

There are lots of worksheets at the workshop like the ‘What I want to happen’ booklet and ‘It’s your plan’.

The second workshop was held at Wheatfield Hospice. Staff at Wheatfield hospital did a talk and a tour which was a positive experience. St. Jemma’s Hospice are interested in helping.

7

Barbara wants to train people in how to do the talks.

If people want to sign up then there will be flyers produced and you can contact the team.

Gurdeep asked about different funerals, cultures and religions. Gurdeep thought that the different cultures, funerals and religions should be represented at the workshops.

LEEP 1 have a drop in session to discuss difficult topics and emotions.

John Burley, Barbara Ball, Sadie Dunne, Julie Hutcherson, Lynn Richardson and the hospitals chaplaincy service are involved. Barbara will be e-mailed the minutes for this meeting.

3. Community Learning Disabilities Review

The review is of teams with nurses, physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, dieticians, speech and language therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists.

The review is going to check that services work well, find out what people think and find ways of doing things better. The review will find out what we do now, the choices we have for the future and choose what works best. The review is looking at how people get to use services, the care we give people and how the teams are organised. The project has been talking to carers and service users.

Jacob Jasi talked about the Community Learning Disabilities review.

9

The review will finish in November. We will then tell people what the choices are for the future. The proposal will go round teams in January. Jacob said that they would ask the People’s Parliament what they think and be at the Trust’s Annual Members day.

The review has also used the Health Task Group twitter feed to ask people what they think..

Sarah asked where people can give their answers. Jacob said people could email him at [email protected]

Jacob said he would be coming back to the Health Task Group to share the proposal.
