LeDroit Park Public Safety Survey

Summary Highlights: 65 individuals participated in the 5 question survey 89% of respondents were LeDroit Park residents 48% of respondents feel that crime is serious in LeDroit Park The LeDroit Park Civic Association should definitely focus on the following crime
prevention initiatives: Neighborhood Watch Program, Neighborhood Safety Walks, and
Youth Activities The LeDroit Park Civic Association should consider the following crime prevention
initiatives: CPR/First Aid, Group dog walks, and Support group for crime victims
Methodology:1
The LeDroit Park Public Safety Survey, consisting of 5 multiple choice questions with optional
comment sections. Survey Monkey, an online survey tool was utilized to create the surveyand tabulate statistics. The LeDroit Park Civic Association Executive Board approved the final
survey questions before the survey was posted online. The survey was disseminated mainlythrough yahoo group listservs (3D MPD Listserv, 305 Public Safety Listserv, LeDroit Park
Public Safety Listserv and the LeDroit Park Listserv) and e-mail. The link to the survey wasalso tweeted through the LeDroit Park Civic Association Twitter Account, and posted to
numerous Facebook Accounts related to LeDroit Park. Paper copies were distributed at 2Civic Association Meetings held on February 22 and March 22. A Total of 65 people
responded to the survey over approximately a 1-month span of time.
1. What neighborhood do you live in?
89% of the individuals that responded were LeDroit Park residents
The remaining individuals that responded were from the Bloomingdale and Shaw
Neighborhoods respectively.
2. Thinking back over the last year, rate how serious you feel the level of crime is in the
LeDroit Park area:
48% Serious, 22% Somewhat serious, 16% Not too serious, 14% Very serious and no one
reported that they felt crime was Not at all serious. Individuals were left the option to makecomments if they would like to further discuss their answer.
The following is a summary of similar comments and themes: (21 people responded) Concerns around increases in:
Muggings Theft from auto
Home invasion (particularly during the day) Hold-ups Open air drug dealing Loitering among juveniles and adults (specifically around 7th & T Street, NW) Violent crime and loitering around Shaw/Howard Metro Station (LeDroit park
residents walk from this Metro station daily) and bus stops (specifically the 70 & 90
bus routes) Youth have no respect for adults/authority
1The LeDroit Park Public Safety Survey should not be used solely as a tool to predict a level of public safety of all LeDroit
Park neighbors. While efforts were made to disseminate this survey only 65 residents took part in a mostly online survey.

Increase professionalism and response time from 911 Residents that have lived in LeDroit Park for 5-10 years feel that crime is moderate yet on
the rise compared to when they first moved into LeDroit Park More than 3 people stated that they have been victims of serious crimes in the past 6
months including one person that stated, My life has been threatened, seriously threatened,
in the past 6 months. Some residents feel that crime it is part of living in the city/urban environment so it is
important to always stay alert.
3. Please indicate your level of interest in these crime prevention/public safety initiatives
The top 3 initiatives that individuals thought should be a CIVIC ASSOCIATION focus were:1. Neighborhood Watch Program 67%2. Neighborhood Safety Walks 61%3. Youth Activities 42%
The top 3 initiatives that individuals thought might be a good idea for civic associations toaddress were:

CPR/First Aid 64%2. Group dog walks 63%3. Support group for crime victims 61%
Summary of Comments: (10 people responded)
Offer parenting classes Installing more crime cameras MPD should create a newsletter every 3 months highlighting notable crimes or change of
crime in the neighborhood and tips to combat crime
Block parties to get to know each otherNeighborhood cleanup (and keeping it clean) focusing on: cleaning up dog poop, schools,
parks, and basketball courts. Reduce the amount of public housing in the neighborhood One person felt that crime prevention activities were unnecessary and that we just simply
needed to arrest more offenders and keep them locked up.

MPD Should continue to partner with HU police to reduce crime Continue to report suspicious activity immediately to police Make sentencing laws for offenders harsher, even for first-time offenders Stop the revolving door at 300 Indiana Avenue Increased foot patrol and more frequent patrol from police to prevent crime Systemic and integrated collaboration through the invisible lines of our neighboring
communities: Bloomingdale, Columbia Heights, Shaw, and U Street
