Assignment 2 contd
Material properties- What is it made of? Are there are more
than one material? Did it fail at the material interface? Whatare some key material properties affecting its use (Kc, Hv,yield strength, E, density, melting temperature, how coldeffects it, how stress effects it)? What are some key materialproperties affecting its failure? Provide values (if you can) and
meaning/significance (this is where the technical thoughtcomes in). Why is this material used in this application? Whatare its strengths (e.g., high hardness) and weaknesses (e.g.,low ductility)? What is the crystal structure? Type of bond?
Bonus: Define some of the important properties and
comment on how these properties are determined(experimentally, directly, indirectly. Offer insight into theirphysical significance (not E is the slope of the curve.) Pictureshelp (especially microstructure). Incorporate definitions in thetext using footnotes.

Assignment 2 contd
Failure- Explain how it failed- show some pictures. Is it bulk or
localized failure? Describe the potential loading scenario(estimate stresses if you like). Keywords: ductile failure vsbrittle failure, shear, necking, localization, fracture/failure.
Explain the primary failure phenomena in detail. Introducesome potential mechanisms. Define them. Include schematics
of the microstructure if you like. What are some associatedeqs with the mechanism? Was the loading condition poor? Why was the loading condition bad? Was it poorly designed?
Objective, goals, methods and approaches- List objectives andgoals. Explain methods, approaches to solving the design
problem keep this brief and only include the options thatyou will be performing. Keep simple. Keep in mind: Can youmeasure loads somehow? Fatigue/wear? How can youquantify the failure/design? How can you characterize thefailure (e.g., have you seen this failure before)? You cant just
look at it, you have the prove it.

Assignment 2 Report
Report: Once you have included some or all these,
you need to write a report. The goal of this report
should be to show that you have initial
understanding of your component, an idea how it
failed and why it failed, and an initial scope for theremaining of the term. Each section will slightly
change throughout the term so be open-minded.
Also, always start by doing the simple things well.
Keep the report as concise as possible. Also, include
your evaluation sheets.

Project Outline-Assignment 3
Focusing Scope and Introduction to Evaluation and Re-
Design Improve scope- From A1 you should have an initial
scope. Is your scope achievable? Does it fit intoMechanics of Materials and Mech Engn? Improve
methods/approaches. Consider if additional work onother sections in A1 is needed. Think critically.
Design process- The next 2 assignments are about thedesign process. Keep in mind that you also need toshow consideration as to how you are going to analyzethe work at the next level. The next level is the hands-on portion of the project. Keep this portion simple.Start planning (experimental design, analysis design-microstructure work, prototype design-building).

Assignment 3 contd
In addition to evaluating the old component, you must also begin
to consider designs for the re-designed component. Balance yourtime and effort.
Re-designed component
First, get a plan on how you are going to re-design the part:
Constraints- list them.Only choose key ones.
Are there new approaches/ methodology to include? Does your timeline (approaches) change?
You should begin to re-design the component.
How would you improve the design? Dimension design? Can youavoid the problem?
Can you change the material? Can you change the microstructure?
Be sure to say why you choose aspects of the design.
CAD work- Does my re-design part need a CAD drawing to betterillustrate it? Is this in my realm of expertise?

Report: Assignment 3
Report: This report should begin with the revised objectives, methods/approaches. Relate the design problem, its significance, and some keytechnical ideas in your methods/approaches section. Approaches shouldinclude an initial plan regarding the remaining components of the project.Provide a structure of the current report at the end of this section.
Next, your Failed-component section should be considered. This is likeResults, but you can name it however you want. Please include technicalconsiderations for each of the aspects previously mentioned. These willhelp you understand the problem better.
The final thing to include in your report is the initial work on the re-designed component. Including constraints is required and any preliminarysketches. You do not have to state future work, but please keep in mind.Include your evaluation sheet.
Note: Again, you do not need to include all of these components in thereport. It is in your best interest to keep them all in mind. Remember: its
important to consistently relate the work to the problem and to focus onkey points. Please use design-related keywords.

Assignment 4: Continuation o
analysis/design component
This assignment will be a continuation of the previous one.Things to consider:
Knowing what you now know, can you improve your project?
Continue re-designing the part. Be sure to say why you
choose each aspect of the design Can you improve how it failed and why it failed sections?
Improve technical language in previous assignments.
What have you done so far? Recap (like an abstract or a
summary would be). And what do you need to do in thefuture.
**Start planning the last phase of your project- testing, handsone, microstructure evaluation, FEA, some or all of these

Assignment 4 Report
Report: You should include an abstract in this report on what
you have done to date. Next, build on the results sectionfrom the previous report. This should be the next section inyour report. With more knowledge, can you make bettercomments on the Failed component section? Include thissection as well. Include the re-designed part. Remember toshow how it meets the requirements, and fits into the originaldesign problem. By this time you should have a fewparagraphs in your discussion section. Include future work.
Note: With a month remaining in the course you should have
the introduction completed, and should be 75 % completedthe Results section. After this assignment, the remainingwork should be finalizing your design, showing that it works, and focusing on the hands-on portion of the project.

Assignment 5. Hands-on aspect of the
project
With over a month remaining, you are required tobegin to work on the hands-on portion of theproject. This work will be included in the next 2reports. This is where Bs turn into As. Items to
consider:
Do you have a plan to finish this project? Is this planfocused?
Begin to perform the hands on portion of theproject (next report due in 3 weeks). Come and talkto me if you have questions
Focus on the key essentials and keep it simple

Assignment 5 Report
Report: Include a brief methods/approach for the
hands-on portion of the project. Remember to
relate it back to the problem (e.g., understanding
the failure better, building approach, etc). If not yet
completed, please include the re-design of yourpart. You may also include an updated version of
the re-design. Include all work performed on the
hands-on aspect of the project.

Assignment 6
Finish hands-on aspect and report on it
After you do some hands-on stuff does your designchange?
Finalize re-design and report on it
Can you add additional technical consideration to your
design/comments knowing what you now know? Summarize document and write abstract.
Make sure pictures are good quality and showthoughtful technical consideration.
Include future work Remember: Assignment 6 should complete your final
report.
Report: This is your final report. Please follow structure
guidelines.
