Preface
This is the second MICCAI the agship international conference for medicalimage computing and computerassisted intervention MICCAI was created bymerging three closely related and thriving conference series VBC Visualisation in Biomedical Computing MRCAS Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery and CVRMed Computer Vision Virtual Reality and Robotics inMedicine to provide a single focus for the presentation of highquality researchin this important multidisciplinary area The rst MICCAI was held in BostonUSA in October It attracted a large number of excellent submissions andwas extremely well attended The meeting went a long way towards meeting itsambitious objectives of bringing together the best theoretical and applied workin this rapidly emerging eld and encouraging constructive dialogue betweencomputer scientists and clinicians
We are delighted to report a similar level of interest in MICCAI A total of fulllength papers were submitted covering a broad range of topics Of these were accepted for inclusion in the conference as oral presentations and as posters All the selected papers appear in these proceedings Each paperwas reviewed by four members of the Scientic Review Committee selected forscientic or clinical expertise of relevance to the subject matter Final decisionswere made by the Programme Committee following closely the advice of thereviewers We are indebted to the members of the Scientic Review Committeefor the time they devoted to the review process and for their wellinformed andgenerally detailed feedback to authors
The result is another volume of highquality papers that we hope will contribute to the development of this important and exciting area We are alsoindebted to the dedicated team of sta and students at Manchester who helpedto put together the proceedings particularly Angela Castledine Alan BrettMike Rodgers Danny Allen Christine Beeston Karen Davies Tony Lacey andChris Wolstenholme We were very pleased to welcome delegates to Cambridgeand hope that you found MICCAI an enjoyable and stimulating experience Forreaders unable to attend the conference we hope that you will nd this a valuable record of the scientic programme and look forward to meeting you atMICCAI which will be held in Pittsburgh USA
