Civil Rights in the UnitedStates

O Civil rights are rights that deal with equalstatus and treatment of all people.

O They protect people from discrimination.O Civil rights protect peoples rights to

participate in government, such as votingand running for office.

O In the United States, civil rights areprotected by the law.

O Such laws are found in the Constitutionand its amendments, federal and state

laws, and Supreme Court decisions.O Societys idea of fair and equal treatment

A Pattern of DiscriminationO In the past centuries, the U.S. government

operated with prejudice toward certaingroups.

O Enslaved for over 250 years, African Americans received horrible treatment formuch of U.S. history.

O Until the 1860s, many U.S. citizens and

the U.S. government considered African Americans to be property and thereforeunequal to whites.

O Native Americans were long denied equalityand civil rights.

O Throughout the 1800s, the U.S. government

repeatedly violated land treaties it made withNative Americans.O Eventually the government forced from their

traditional lands onto reservations.O Native Americans were often prevented from

speaking their native languages, raising theirown children, or following their traditionalways of life.
