Guidance for Readers at Mass
Welcome to the ministry of Reader
Please prepare the Readings before coming to church. Look at both readings, the Psalm and the Gospel. You can take a Missalette in advance. There are also leaflets (the"Wednesday Word"and others) on the bookcase at the back of churcThese reflect on on and help to explain the Readings for the following Sunday.
Check the Lectionary on the ambo, to ensure that the page is open at the right place.
Check that the Bidding Prayers are in place.
At the 8.30 Mass , the reader invites the praying of the Entrance Antiphon. Announce "Entrance Antiphon", and lead it's recitation, as the priest comes through the Sacristy door.
Approach the sanctuary confidently and with courtesy with your co-reader,making a full bow to the Cross as you arrive at the foot of the altar steps.
Make sure the microphone is on and in the correct position for you. Without it you won't be heardbeyond the first few rows.
Looking at the congregation begin "A Reading from…....".There is no need to say the " The FIRST Reading is from……." There is no need to read the tag line at the beginning of the reading.
Vary the sound and tempo as you feel appropriate.
The microphone is directional so don't move from your position or you won't be heard. Use your index finger to keep your place as you read.
Look at the congregation from time to time as you read.Don't keep your head bowedand eyes fixed on the text from beginning to end.
At the end of the reading allow a few seconds for reflection before saying "THE WORD OF THE LORD"
Read out the Response to the Psalm and repeat with the congregation.
Remember a short pause before introducing the Response to the Psalm;similarly after the Psalm and before the Second Reading and before announcing the Gospel Acclamation. At the 10.30 Mass the Psalm and the Gospel Acclamation are usually sung by the choir.
The reader of the Bidding Prayers returns to their place after the priest's concluding prayer before the offertory.
Enjoy the reading and its preparation and you will express this in your voice.
Remember - You are Proclaiming the Word of God.
