Cheltenham Connect launch Bath Road DIY Street Scheme

DIY Streets is all about local people taking ownership of the places that really matter to them and having a say in how they should be developed. Community initiative, Cheltenham Connect, have great plans to improve the Bath Road area after successfully securing a £5000 Community Pride Grant from Cheltenham Borough Council.

Both residents and local traders have expressed significant concerns about the quality of the street-space, lack of parking and seating, and absence of green planting and trees in Bath Road. It was felt that a locally led DIY Streets initiative would be a powerful way of engaging the community to help resolve some of these issues.

A dedicated website is being developed to keep all local residents and traders up to date and to encourage input from the community. DIY Streets is all about community engagement, giving you the chance to be involved in improving our neighbourhood, so be sure to have your say.

To find out more and to share your thoughts and ideas please visit www.connectdiystreets.net once the website launches in early February.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS

How to cure an air lock

If no water, or a spluttering supply, comes out of the hot tap when its opened, the likely cause is an air lock. If you have an automatic washing machine, and have both the hot and cold supplies connected, an effective remedy can be implemented quite easily.

The cold water to at least one of the downstairs taps will be connected directly to the mains (this is generally the kitchen sink tap). The washing machine will be connected to this run of cold pipe as it needs mains pressure to work properly. The mains pressure of the cold water is much greater than that of the hot water and we can use this greater pressure to push any air locks back to the hot water storage tank.

Disconnect the cold water hose from the back of the washing machine (Turn the valve off first). Disconnect the hot water hose from the valve on the hot water pipe. (Turn this valve off first also). Now connect the free end of the cold hose, to the free, hot valve. Turn on the hot water valve and then the cold water valve. This will now allow the greater pressure of the cold water to push any air back up the hot water pipe.

Leave both valves open for approximately 30 seconds and then close, cold first. Now check the flow from the hot tap at the kitchen sink and the air should have been dispelled.

Regards

Dave Stevens.

If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.

Christmas Thank You Over Christmas The Salvation Army in Gloucester prepared 250 food and 250 toy parcels for the needy in Gloucester. Major Adrian Altman the commanding officer said. “The demand was 25% up on previous years. This involved a great deal of work from our members but we could not have managed without the generosity of the people of Gloucester and we would like to thank everyone for their support at Christmas and throughout the year.”

Good news for Leckhampton Hill The flora and fauna on Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be well looked after for the next 10 years, thanks to a generous grant of £100,000 won by Cheltenham Borough Council. The area of outstanding beauty will receive £10,000 each year for the next 10 years to maintain and improve it. Julius Marstrand, chairman of the Friends of Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common (FOLK) says “In terms of outdoor space, it is one of the jewels in Cheltenham’s crown. This funding will only help us to enhance it. Hopefully some of the funds can be put towards maintaining the quarry and the lime kilns, as well as parts of the tramway that are still visible. Not only is it a site of great environmental diversity and scientific importance, but it is of great historical relevance to the town as well.”

New garden waste collection scheme to start in Leckhampton From February 2011, a new optional kerbside brown wheeled bin scheme will replace the green bag garden waste service. Residents can choose to subscribe to the scheme by paying £36 in advance for one year. Subscribers will receive a brown wheeled bin in which to keep garden waste, which is then emptied fortnightly. Approved garden waste includes: grass cuttings, hedge and shrub clippings, leaves, twigs and bark, plants, flowers and weeds, windfall fruit and small branches. But not soil, animal waste, food waste, large branches, plant post or grow bags. For those who choose not to subscribe to the new service, garden waste can still be taken to the Swindon Road Recycling Centre. The current green bag garden waste service ends on 28 January 2011. To subscribe to the new brown bin service, you can sign up online at www.cheltenham.gov.uk/waste, over the phone on 01242 264244, or in person at the Cheltenham Municipal Offices reception.

Weather warning !

This time of year, we all travel to see friends and family, but are we really ready to deal with driving in the winter weather? Phoenix driving have put together a few suggestions to help drivers to deal with this weather. The first question to ask is do I really need to travel, could I wait for the weather to improve? Ok so you need to travel have you checked your car ?

F Fuel, make sure you have enough L Light, make sure they all work, carry spare bulbs, make sure they are clean and free of snow

O Check the oil level. W Check your engine coolant and your windscreen washer fluid.

E Electrics, make sure your battery is in good working order, and that all electrics are working as they should.

R Rubber, check your tyre tread, and your tyre pressure, make sure your wiper blades are in good condition. Carry an emergency kit A basic kit should include: de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food, and any medication you may need,in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.Make sure your phone is fully charged, and you have break down cover.

When roads are slippery it can take you up to 10 times longer to stop. Reduce your speed and drive with extra care,if on ice use higher gears. Be aware that ice forms more easily on:

• hilly or exposed roads

• roads that pass under or over a bridge • roads shaded by trees or buildings

Skidding is usually caused by the driver braking, accelerating or steering too harshly or driving too fast for the road conditions. If skidding occurs, remove the cause by releasing the brake pedal fully or easing off the accelerator. Turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid. For example, if the rear of the vehicle skids to the right, steer immediately to the right to recover. Read the highway code, and Driving the essential skills, both are full of advice on driving in all types of weather.
