Lesson 20: At the zooGramática: The Date

Days of the MonthThe day number is always in the ordinal form and, in speech, is always preceded by THE.

In spoken English:

> The twenty-ninth.

> The twentieth.

> The sixth.

> The seventh.

In written English:

The ordinal number form is most commonly used and 'the' is omitted.

YearsYears are divided in two:1999 -> 19/94 -> nineteen ninety-nine1984 -> 19/84 -> nineteen ninety-four1820 -> eighteen twenty

Exceptions:If the year ends in 00 we say hundred.1700 -> 17/00 -> seventeen hundred.

If the year ends in 01-09 we say O and hyphenate the words:1605 -> 16/05 -> sixteen-O-five

Months of the yearThe month is always preceded by OF.

In spoken English:

> The twenty-ninth of June.

> The twentieth of February.

> The seventh of September.

In written English:

'Of' is omitted.

Years

Page 9: Lección20

Lesson 20: At the zooFonética

The Date: The difference between BrE and AmEAn important difference between British and American English is the date.In both styles, the day and month are separated from the year with a comma in written English.

British English uses the day/month/year format:

> 07/09/1926

> 'The seventh of September nineteen twenty-six'

> 7th September, 1926.

American English uses the month/day/year format:

> 09/07/1926

> 'July ninth nineteen twenty-six'

> July 9th, 1926

Basic Spelling Rules: I before E ExceptionsWe have learnt the rule:I before E except after CHowever, there are some exceptions to the rule.

Examples of ie after c:

> Species

> Science

> Sufficient

Examples of ei not preceded by c:

> Seize

> Weird

> Vein

> Foreign

Lesson 20: At the zooDiálogo

At the zooMumAndrew, what do you like the most about the zoo?AndrewThe things I like the most are the giraffes, they are a lot taller than we are. I also like thecrocodiles with their long mouths and great big teeth!MumOK, and what don't you like about the zoo?AndrewI don't really like the cage the tigers are in. Tigers are big and they like to jump around andrun, but their cages are very small. I think it's a bit cruel to have such small cages.

Wild AnimalsRobertDo you know that there is an animal called a liger?MaryNonsense! I don't know what you're talking about.RobertIt's true! It is the cross between a lion and a tiger. Ligers grow to be much bigger thannormal lions and tigers; the biggest cat on earth is a liger and it weighs 450 kg.
