Lebo lived with his mom and his gran. They had moved to a new flat closer to the hospital. Lebo’s mom was a nurse.

Lebo missed his old friends. He was feeling a little lonely. If he had a pet, he would have a friend to play with all of the time.

“Please can I have a pet?” Lebo asked his Mom. Lebo was thinking of a puppy, just a small puppy. They now had a garden and he would take his puppy for a walk every day.

“That’s a good idea,” said Mom. Mom was thinking of a goldfish in a bowl, or a rabbit in a hutch, or even a bird in a cage.

At the weekend Lebo and his mom went to the pet shop. There were no puppies at the pet shop. Lebo was sad.

“Maybe you should go to the dog shelter,” suggested granny. “That is a good idea,” said Lebo.

Lebo and his mom looked at some of the dogs at the shelter. They were big dogs, they were not puppies. Maybe there were no puppies at the shelter either. But wait . . . . . . . . .

“Look!” shouted Lebo excitedly. The next dog he saw was a small brown puppy.

When the puppy saw Lebo, it started to wag its tail and bark. The puppy wanted to play. “I think he likes me,” giggled Lebo. “Please can we take him home?”
