DESCRIPTION

A presentation for Full Sail class on Public Speaking on the TED lectures by Sir Ken Robinson outlining the unfortunate lack of schools to appreciate and cultivate creativity and imagination in our children. The 'Arts' are always last on the list of priorities. Even the art schools seem to suffer from this on occasion as is shown in the example of Janet Echelman who applied to 7 art schools and was rejected by each one. She went on to teach herself for 10 years and since then has been recognized for wondrous accomplishments in the arts. "Today Echelman has constructed net sculpture environments in metropolitan cities around the world. She sees public art as a team sport and collaborates with a range of professionals including aeronautical and mechanical engineers, architects, lighting designers, landscape architects, and fabricators." http://www.echelman.com/site/biography.html Her story is inspiring to all those who feel in their heart that they are an artist and will not be denied no matter what the excepted institutions may think. The presentation is short but the importance of the material covered is vast! Following some of the links provided will open many areas to explore further. Be inspired and expand your mind! Scott E. CASE IN POINTJanet Echelman

Taking imagination seriously …

Janet Echelman applied to 7 Art Schools and was rejected by ALL 7!

Rather than giving up she taught herself painting for 10 years …

That was when she was offered a Fulbright Scholarship to India …

CASE IN POINTJanet Echelman

Taking imagination seriously …

Janet Echelman found her true voice as an artist when her paints went missing …

Rather than giving up she resolved to look for the answer with her whole body …

She discovered in the dark a wondrous answer …

and then slightly to the right.” Quote by Sir Ken Robinson

in the imagination, the painter has first in his mind and

then in his hand; …”

CASE IN POINTJanet Echelman

Taking imagination seriously …

In Mahabalipuram India, a fishing village famous for sculpture, this miracle of creativity occurred.

She arrived but her paints did NOT …

When others would have returned home she stayed and searched for an answer …

Page 15: LeBlancScott TED_week2_presentation1

CASE IN POINTJanet Echelman

Taking imagination seriously …

She found a gift of creativity in the hands of the fishermen as they lovingly mended their nets … an unorthodox new art material.

This was the humble beginning of a new art form …

All because she dared to be wrong …

CASE IN POINTEvaluation

Janet Echelman

Taking imagination seriously …

Her story is beautifully told in her lecture for the TED convention.

She took her time and as gently as her art flows in the wind so did her words.

Her smile was radiant and her gaze traveled over the entire audience.

Janet is as dynamic as her creations! I felt a great wave of wonder and inspiration flowing through me as I listened and watched.

In her art she explains the universe in terms of force and energy = dynamism.

In her art was continuous change, activity, progress and vigor.

Taking imagination seriously …

I felt very ‘special’ as Janet shared

her creations … It was an honor and

I felt like a PRINCE.

Her IDEAS have an intoxicating effect as she explained those who she has CONNECTED with and the limitless directions her work is MOVING in.

COMPARISONSir Ken Robinson

Witty and whimsical and almost childlike in his mannerism.

Not animated in a physical way yet able to move the audience with the turn of his head or the raising of an eyebrow.

His clever unique way of seeing the ordinary and explaining this in a story is his power.

Janet Echelman

Subtle and soft spoken and yet clearly delivers every thought with gentle precision.

Also not animated in a physical way yet holds the audience with her eyes and glowing smile.

Her imagination and creations are her power.

YOU are a diamond in the rough!

Believe it and Retrieve it …It is your

HERITAGE!

WHAT DID I LEARN?

Much more than what I could include in the slides!

I don’t mean to be obscure but seriously my mind is exploding like the BIG BANG and I

have so many resources now to follow up on that I need more lifetimes.

Look at some of the links included in the citation pages at the end for some

inspiration.
