Silke Spingies specializes in works relating to the natural world. Using natural, asymmetric materials and formal, geometric shapes, Silke creates what appear to be natural giant flower heads that, when displayed, create a relaxing, meditative atmosphere reminiscent of being outside in a woodland environment. Each piece is made from leaves found on the trees of London – lime, cherry, ginkgo, buddleja, and beech leaves are all featured in the work. Each leaf is pressed for up to three weeks then sewn to a layer of fabric, attached to a base such as a paper lantern or polystyrene ball. This process takes up to a week, depending on the size of the sculpture and density of leaves. It’s a calm, relaxing process that requires a lot of patience. It is anticipated that the colour and texture of each piece will change over time, reflecting the changes that take place naturally in the wild.
Each piece has been shot by photographer Sam Scott-Hunter – an important part of the process to provide documentation of how the sculptures looked when first created, as they will deteriorate over time.
Silke Spingies is a German artist based in East London. Her work has recently been exhibited at Forman’s Smokehouse Gallery in London. She first became interested in working with natural objects when working on Botany for the Artist (published by Dorling Kindersley) and has since used a variety of leaves from London trees to create sculptures.
