Learning Together, Achieving Forever Habit: Happiness Issue 35 21st June 2019 Message from our Principal Ms Botley Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you so much for the lovely words we have had from you following our Ofsted report’s publication on Monday and for your understanding about how the Ofsted framework has changed since 2013, so despite the ‘good’ judgement rather than ‘outstanding’, our school has improved significantly since 2013. This is at the same time as starting our pre- Nursery and doubling in size in terms of pupil numbers, staff and buildings! When you read the report hopefully you will read all the positive comments about the Primary Phase. It was really lovely to see that a quotation from one of our Long Lane students made it into the report: ‘There is so much learning in this school, you can’t resist it.’ I was also pleased that our recognition from the Department for Education for being in the top 3% of schools nationally for progress was cited in the report. We received a lovely message from Robert Henderson, Director of Croydon Children’s Services which ended with ‘Please pass on my congratulations and thanks to staff, the governing body, the children and parents for all their hard work which has been recognised in this Section 5 inspection report’. I echo his thanks to you, our lovely parents, for your continued support and friendliness. We just need more of you to join our PTA! Please see their message below. We now start our sports day / open evening season. We hope the weather holds out for all our sports day events, and that we do not have to postpone any of them. Year 2 parents we hope to see lots of you at our Long Lane Open Evening on Wednesday 3 rd July, from 6pm-7.30pm. This is a chance for you and your child to get to know Long Lane, or re- acquaint yourselves if your child was in our Nursery. Congratulations to our newly elected school councillors who will take up their positions now ready to hit the ground running in September. Thank you to all the school councillors from this year who have had a real impact across the school. Their job over the next few weeks is to pass on their skills and advice to the new councillors, in our transition council period. Best wishes, Mrs Botley Scooters/Bikes at Stroud Green We have noticed that now the weather is becoming warmer more children are scootering to school. This is great but if your child is late, we can no longer store these by the office. Please can we ask that you now take them away with you or if on time park them in the playground. Thank you in advance The Office Have we got up-to-date contact details for you? Please remember to let us know if you move, change your telephone number or begin using another email address as soon as possible. This is to ensure that efficient safeguarding and data protection procedures are being implemented at all times. We need two working contact telephone numbers in school for each child. If you are in doubt … Simply pop into one of our offices or email [email protected] so that we can check and update our records. Wear your Favourite Colour On the Thursday 4th July Children will be invited to attend school in their favourite colour, this is to raise money for the 150th anniversary of Evelina Children’s hospital, where some of our children have been treated. To wear your favourite colour all is ask for is a £1 donation. Thank you in advance.

Mindful Parking and Driving Disabled parents and pedestrians have been finding it increasingly hard to use the pavements and to access school as a result of parents parking over the drop curbs. This is on top of several complaints from local residents about being blocked in their driveways. Please can we also remind you to pay extreme care and attention whilst reversing or making tricky manoeuvres and avoid driving on the pavements. Time we have to spend fielding angry calls from neighbours and apologising on behalf of those who park in this way is time taken away from our core business of learning and teaching. Likewise, money spent on signs and banners is money we could otherwise spend on visits, books and resources. Thank you Mr Craggs and Mrs Botley

SHIRLEY PARK PTA News JUST ONE WEEK UNTIL OUR SUMMER FAIR! On Saturday, 29th June 2019 we will hold our annual summer fair from 1-4pm to raise money for our children. Many thanks to the 3 volunteers who have contacted us to help so far. WE NEED LOTS MORE HELPERS! - if you can spare an hour to ‘man’ a stall, please email [email protected] or leave your name and number with Mr Rampasad, Mrs Evry, Mrs Morris or with the office staff who will pass the message on to us. We are still looking for the following items for the fair:

We had an offer of one gazebo so far. If anyone else could lend us a gazebo, we would be very grateful

for as many as we could borrow – especially if it is a sunny day!

If anyone has any good quality toys for our toy tombola – these would be used as prizes – anything that

you think your child might like to win!

If you are thinking of having a toy clear out, now is the time! The school are always looking for

toys/games for reception and breakfast club, but we are also collecting for our bric a brac stall.

WE NEED FACE PAINTERS! So far, no one has volunteered for this. Our children love having their faces

painted and we aim to keep prices low. If you know of anyone who can face paint, please let us know!

If anyone has a gas BBQ we could borrow, please let us know!

If anyone is a member of the London Ambulance Service and could help with organizing an Ambulance

to attend the fair, please email [email protected] The fire Service and police will be attending!

playtime for the class who sells the most tickets! The raffles prizes are amazing – £100 CASH as first

Picture of the Month

The picture of the month for June is of this sculpture by London-based artist Michelle Reader. She is

influenced by environmental concerns, and many of her sculptures are made out of recycled

materials. These sculptures are a life-size portrait of a family made from their own waste materials,

collected over a period of one month. Why don’t you make your own sculpture using junk modelling

materials from your recycling bin?
