What is a Keyboard?

• An input tool, that lets the user interact with the computer

• What other input tool do you know?

5 Categories of KeysAlphabetic Keys

Their jobs are to show letters, punctuation, & spaces from using the space bar.-ABC keys have more than 1 character on them.-Some have symbols & symbols.-Others have letters & letters

Color the alphabetic keys red.

Can you tell which letter-letter characters are on the letter keys?

Numeric KeysTheir jobs are to show number representations.-there are number keys above the alpha keys-there are number keys on the right-hand keypad-the top row of number keys shares with symbols. Look at the symbols.

Color all the number keys blue.

• How many of the symbols on the number keys can you name? Trace them out with the black pencil.

Navigation KeysTheir job is to navigate which means

to move through, around, or over.The keys on the keyboard that allow the

movement of the cursor are: home, end, page up, page down, and the 4 arrows

Color the navigation keys green.Ancient sailors navigated through the waters using the stars and sun.

Navigation Keys on the Keypad

• Look at keys 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9 on the keypad.

• What do you notice?

• Under which category did we color these green all ready?

• How can they be navigation keys?

• Navigation keys are also located on the numeric keypad. Outline those keys in green.

Function KeysTheir job is to give commands to the

system-the function keys are numbered 1-12 and are noted as function keys by the letter F.

Color those keys with the brown pencil.How do you use any of the function

keys?

Esc, Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Ctrl, , Alt, Alt, , Menu, Ctrl, Enter, Backspace, Insert, Delete, Num Lock, Pause/Break, Scroll Lock, Print Scrn/SysR

What does the Esc key do? The Tab? The Shift? The Backspace? The Delete? The Insert?

your keyboard, fill in the chart.

• Look at the keyboard and think about what you have learned.

• Use a lined page or an MS Word document to write your thoughts in a ten-twelve sentence reflection.
