I will be able to…
*Solve absolute value equations
*Decide if an absolute value equation has
no solutions or infinite solutions
ABSOLUTE VALUE
The distance between x and 0
= 3
The distance between x and 0 is 3 so x = 3 and x = -3

Remember: The quantity inside the absolute value could be positive or negative.
DEFINITION OF ABSOLUTE VALUE
=
SOLVE:
x - 4 = 6 and -(x - 4) = 6 -x + 4 = 6
-x = 2 x = 10 and x =-2
This means that 10 and -2 are 6 units away from 4.

SOLVE: 3
x + 7 = 3 and -(x + 7) = 3 -x - 7 = 3
-x = 10 x = -4 and x = -10
Meaning: -10 and -4 are 3 units away from -7.
