I wonder if I might have your attention?

Bless to us our thinking; and, learning, may we glorify You.

Bless to us our senses; and, perceiving, may we delight in what you make.

Bless to us our conversation; In speaking may we build up all.

So may we think more truly;know more clearly

and grow together in loving service.Amen.

You may think that this is you ...

But, honestly, this is more like it ...

And its chock-full of these ... and they keep on connecting ... !!!

... and you keep on learning.

But actually, it's not just about brains.

It's a whole body thing: nervous system, endocrine system, the social relationships ... !!

So ...the first set of study skills are also life skills:good company; good diet; exercise; rest and sleep; music making;

You weren't expecting that, were you?

Probably you were expecting this stuff ...

Yes

but first ...

Adam names the animals

... and that was it's name.

Iow: as Adam came to know each animal, he consolidated his learning with a name...

... we construct our own learning (eg language)

We build knowledge: adding new stuffto what we already know or think we know.

Our study skills need to help us to make connections and put things together...

and we have to take control of our learning to help it to happen.

Back to this stuff ...

AFTER the break ...

writing essays

Aim: to gain confidence in how to approach writing an essay in a theological college.

Looking at basic tasks

using some fake examples

some groupwork.

eg.

"Evaluate the accounts of divine providence found in Noddy in Toytown and Rupert Bear Annual, 1966".

breakdown

break down task into components

also: look a LO's and other guidance in handbook

Breakdown eg.

"Evaluate the accounts of divine providence found in Noddy in Toytown and Rupert Bear Annual 1966".

"Evaluate" = ?

"Divine providence" =?

DP in NiT=? DP in RBA =?

SWOT each.

Weigh respective merits and downsides against each other.

LO: "Show understanding of issues in systematic theology as they relate to contemporary literature."

assemble

-Pull together the information you have already-identify and find the information you lack-save it in ways that make sense to you-keep weighing up information against the task

Assemble eg.

"Evaluate the accounts of divine providence found in Noddy in Toytown and Rupert Bear Annual 1966".

LO: "Show understanding of issues in systematic theology as they relate to contemporary literature."

therefore: know that you should make sure that you demonstrate a good understanding of DP and that it doesn't get lost in literary analysis.

definition of evaluate; understanding[s] of DP; exposition of DP in NiT and in RBA; list and explanation of strengths and weaknesses of each.

Actually it's now nearly written. Just need to match up the SWOTs and evaluate them and make sure that there's a good flow between sections.

Make sure structure is clear to reader: contents/overview; subheadings. Check references, citations etc. Conclusion contains no new info?

weave together

a lot of the 'shape' flows out of the task

pay attention to the transitions between sections and points

It might help to have a diagram of the main argument, or to attempt to summarise it to someone else, to check if it flows.

make sure conclusion has no new info

Weave together eg.

"Evaluate the accounts of divine providence found in Noddy in Toytown and Rupert Bear Annual 1966".

groupwork examples
