POS Facilities for Alumni In order to improve our reader service, with effect from 1 May 2011, the payment of the Library Borrower’s Ticket (Graduate) can be settled through the Octopus POS system at our Counter. Software Upgrade to MS Office 2010 To further enhance the teaching facilities, MS Office 2010 has been installed into the PCs at all teaching venues (including classrooms, tutorial rooms, seminar rooms, lecture theatres, Annex Hall, meeting rooms and Multimedia Zone of the LRC Complex) in May 2011. Relocation of the Digital Signage System With a view to provide more readily campus information to visitors/students, the Digital Signage System (Computer and LCD TV) had been relocated from 2/F to the nearby area of the new CS Enquiry Counter on the G/F in early June 2011. Relocation of Computer Rooms Computer Room 443 (on the 4th Floor) of the LRC has been relocated to Room 108 (on the 1st Floor) in late June 2011 in providing the teaching supports. Print Access Control System The PaperCut Print Access Control System has been implemented in September 2011 for students in all the LRC Computer Rooms (i.e. Room 107A-D, 108, 439 and 440). The quota of 1000 free printing pages had been assigned to each student without provision of paper. Simple user guides have been prepared and posted near the printing areas. Starting from 4 October 2011, VTC retiree could apply for a VTC Library Borrower’s Ticket (Retiree) with an annual fee of $300. The ticket holder is allowed to enter into any LRCs in the IVEs/HKDI/HITDC/YCs and borrow up to 5 books/audio cassettes. The application form can be obtained from any Circulation Counter of the LRCs, the Employee Benefits Section of the Human Resources Division (HRD) or by downloading it from the following web pages:

Library Borrower’s Ticket for the VTC Retiree

PC Upgrade at the LRC ComplexIt has been arranged to replace those PCs purchased in 2005-06 at the LRC Complex in providing better learning supports. It is expected that the installation would be completed in the Autumn Semester AY2011/12.

During the Summer Semester, the LRC opening hours had been extended to 7:00 pm from 16 June to 19 August 2011 (Monday to Friday) in catering the needs for the evening classes of AS courses and workshops held by CECS department.

Opening Hours during Summer Semester Break

The dismantling work for the audio-visual equipment and networking facilities at the newly renovated Hall had been carried out in June 2011 while the re-installation work was underway. The progress of the work was on schedule and the installation work was expected to be completed in late October 2011.

Reinstallation of Audio-Visual and Networking Equipment

About 5,600 volumes of books relating to Computing and Engineering disciplines had been transferred from IVE(KC), IVE(KT) and IVE(TM) campuses in July and August 2011. All transferred items were properly processed and shelved by the end of August 2011.

Relocation of Library Collections among Campuses

Green Campus Student CompetitionThe Green Campus Student Competition that was organized by the ST Internet/Intranet Working Group, had been completed successfully. There were a total of 38 products being received for the Competition and the Prize Presentation Ceremony had been held on 13 April 2011 to present the awards to the six winning teams.

Timetabling System TrainingA training session on the Timetabling System had been provided to ST users on 17 June 2011.

Three identical Briefing Sessions with 2 sessions in Cantonese and 1 in English on using the LRC facilities/services had been conducted for new staff on 1 and 2 September 2011. There were in total 21 staff attended the Sessions and the guiding materials had been uploaded to the ST Intranet web page at: http://stcc.vtc.edu.hk/LRC/StaffBriefing/index.asp

Briefing Sessions for New Staff

In order to enhance the LRC services and improve the working condition, a counter renovation project had been carried out between 13 and 31 August this summer. The new Circulation Counter resumed its normal service in early September 2011.

To ensure the Council complies with the Copyright Ordinance, a SAM tool would be implemented to automate the process of taking PC software inventory. A training had been conducted on 30 September 2011 on how to use the SAM tool to generate the software inventory reportsfor staff PCs.

Information for New StudentsIntroductory information and general guidelines for using the major facilities and services provided by the LRC had been distributed to new students during the Ceremonies of the ST Orientation Day on 30 and 31 August 2011.

Book ExhibitionsTwo book exhibitions had been arranged with the local English book and Chinese book contractors, iCaves Ltd. and the Commercial Press, on 30 and 31 August 2011 in the ST campus. Both ST staff and library colleagues from IVE(KC) and IVE(KT) were invited to select books to enrich the LRC collections.

The LRC Student Helper Project would continue for the new academic year. Students from various Disciplines had been recruited and trained to assist in computer room free-booking service, perform technical support for PCs in the LRC (including virus checking/updating and Windows update), provide general support and handle enquiries on the common facilities and resources as well as perform shelf-reading and re-shelving of books and periodicals.

Visits to the LRC

Training Sessions for Final Year Students Four training sessions on the use of learning resources had been conducted for final year students of AS and BA departments in early September and October 2011.

Training Sessions on Electronic Resources for Students of Top-up Degree Programme There were 12 sessions of demonstration with hands-on practice on using EBSCOhost and ProQuest Databases arranged for the new UNN students in early September 2011.
