Discover a Summer Learning Program (S-Term) You’ll Love

Overview Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) offers Summer Learning Programs (S-Term) for students in grades K-12. Students will have opportunities to catch up on academics, learn new skills, prepare for college and career, and make progress toward graduation. All programs are FREE.

Summer Learning Programs (S-Term) Include:

Academic Support Students will be inspired to learn and grow their skills in reading, math and other subjects.

Breakfast and Lunch All students receive free healthy meals twice a day that include entrees, salads, baked goods and locally-grown fruits and vegetables.

TransportationTransportation is available to most students who live in Saint Paul (within transportation guidelines). See map and bus guidelines on page 10-11.

How to RegisterYour child’s current grade level for the 2018-19 school year will be the grade level for summer learning programs. For example, if your student is currently in kindergarten, they may participate in a K-4 summer program. If your student is entering kindergarten in Fall 2019, they are not eligible to attend a K-4 summer learning program.

SPPS Students Currently in Grades K-8Register your student(s) online at spps.org/summer or spps.org/onestop using Spring iUpdate*. After completing and submitting Spring iUpdate, you will receive a confirmation email with your Summer Learning Program selections.

* To retrieve your One Stop username and/or password, visit spps.org/onestop or contact your student’s school.

Complete the paper registration form included in this guide and mail it to the SPPS Student Placement Center by Friday, April 19 to meet the priority enrollment deadline.

SPPS Students Currently in Grades 9-12Work with your school counselor to register. Visit spps.org/summer for site information and times.

Non-SPPS Students (all grades)Register using the form available at spps.org/summer.

• Non-SPPS students in grades K-8: Parents/guardians should complete the paper registration form.

• Non-SPPS students in grades 9-12: Students must have their school counselor help them complete the paper registration form.

Once complete, mail the paper registration form to: Summer Learning Registration, Student Placement Center, Saint Paul Public Schools, 2102 University Ave. W., Saint Paul, MN 55114.

Priority EnrollmentAny eligible student may apply to SPPS Summer Learning Programs (S-Term), but some programs fill up quickly. Apply by Friday, April 19 for the best opportunity to get into the program of your choice and to ensure your child has school bus transportation on the first day of programming.

Families who register by the priority deadline will receive an enrollment confirmation postcard the week of April 29. Students who register after the priority deadline will receive a confirmation postcard approximately two weeks before the start of their Summer Learning Program.

Four-Week ProgramsSummer Session 1 and Summer Session 2Locations: Students are assigned to sites based on their home and/or alternate address. See pages 10-11 for locations, session hours and transportation information.

Students will extend their school-year learning through active, fun and hands-on experiences. The program includes activities in math, reading, physical education, economics, health and studies about Minnesota plants and animals.

Two Session Dates (choose one): June 17-July 11 or July 15-Aug. 8

Language Immersion SPPS Summer Session 1Locations: Benjamin E. Mays IB World School | 560 Concordia Ave., Saint Paul

Available to students currently enrolled in an SPPS Language Immersion Program. Students receive instruction in both their school-year immersion and English languages along with cultural studies and summer-themed activities.

Dates: June 17-July 11 Time: 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

World Cultures (National Youth Sports Program)Locations: Hamline Elementary (drop off) | 1599 Englewood Ave., Saint Paul Hamline University, West Hall (pick up) | 1492 Hewitt Ave., Saint Paul

Students learn about cultures from around the world, participate in daily athletic activities, and experience a college campus.

Dates: July 15-Aug. 8 Time: 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Two-Week ProgramAmerican Indian Program (Grades 1-5)Locations: American Indian Magnet School | 1075 Third St E., Saint Paul Belwin | 1553 Stagecoach Trail S., Afton

American Indian and non-American Indian students spend one week at American Indian Magnet School learning indigenous cultural awareness, and one week at Belwin learning cultural connections to Minnesota animals and their habitats. This program is developed in collaboration with the Department of Indian Work.

Dates: June 17-June 28 Time: 8:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

One-Week ProgramSummer Science Session (Grades 1-5)Location: Belwin | 1553 Stagecoach Trail S., Afton

Students learn through outdoor science-based experiences and can explore over 200 acres of prairie, wetlands and forest.

Two Session Dates (choose one): July 8-12 or July 15-19 Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Students in Grades K-4Students currently in grades K-4 may register for ONE of the Summer Learning Programs listed on pages 4-5. Please note: Some programs fill quickly! Register early.

Five-Week ProgramCamp Teranga with ArtsUs (Grades K-6)Location: Dunning Recreation Center | 1221 Marshall Ave., Saint Paul

Students will develop leadership skills and engage in the arts, culture and science of communities descended from Africa's peoples through performance art, storytelling, dance, gardening and more.

Dates: June 17-July 24 (No classes July 3-5) Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Six-Week ProgramsBELL Power Scholars AcademyLocation: Maxfield Elementary | 380 Victoria St N., Saint Paul

The BELL Power Scholars Academy summer program is a full-day learning experience that combines academic instruction with fun, hands-on enrichment activities, field trips and service projects. The program is designed to help students gain new academic skills and prepare to return to school in the fall ready to excel!

Dates: June 17-July 26 Time: 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools (Grades K-8)Location: Students are assigned to a CDF Freedom Schools site based on their home and/or alternate address. See pages 10-11 for site locations and transportation information.

Students will strengthen their literacy and math skills through culturally-affirming lessons that focus on the contributions of people of color. Students develop leadership skills through science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) activities, community involvement, weekly family activities and field trips.

Dates: June 17-July 26 Time: 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Hmong Karen Youth Pride Program (HKYP)Location: Jackson Elementary | 437 Edmund Ave., Saint Paul

Students receive literacy and math instruction in Hmong and Karen with cultural enrichment activities. The program celebrates Hmong and Karen cultural heritage and includes weekly field trips and one-on-one reading assistance.

Dates: June 17-July 26 Time: 8 a.m.-3:15 p.m.

Classes will not be held on Thursday, July 4 due to the holiday.

Students receive academic support, develop leadership skills and participate in enrichment activities. Students in grade 5 will learn skills to prepare for the transition to middle school. Students in grades 6-7 choose electives to enhance their summer learning. Elective courses may include agriculture, art, digital photo/video production, instrumental music (instruments and books provided), robotics and physical education.

School Bus TransportationFind Your AreaStudents are placed at Session 1, Session 2, and CDF Freedom Schools sites based on their home or alternate address. Students in all other programs can ride the bus if they meet the eligibility requirements below. See the map below, or use the School Finder tool at spps.org/apply to confirm the Area in which you live.

Who Can Ride the Bus?Transportation may be available for students who live in the City of St. Paul and if their home or alternate address is within the program’s designated Area. Students eligible for transportation will receive a bus if they are in:

• Grades K through 5 and live more than one-half mile from a Summer Learning Program site.

• Grades 6-12 and live more than one mile from a Summer Learning Program site.

• Students can be picked up and dropped off at alternate addresses (such as a daycare) if located in the same Area.

NOTE: Families not eligible for transportation must transport their children to and from Summer Learning Program sites. Call the Transportation Department at 651-696-9600 if you are unsure about your child’s eligibility for bus transportation.
