RISK & CHALLENGE

Page 4: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

One of the main appeals to many participants of physical activity is that it offers both a challenge and an acceptable level of risk.

This must always remain in balance to ensure that activities are safe and suitable

Page 5: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

CHALLENGING ACTIVITIESSome activities are clearly more

challenging than othersOAA have many challenges – *Climbing *Surfing

These types of activities require the environment to be

challenging in order to make taking part worthwhile

CHALLENGE - WITHIN ACTIVITIES

RISK ASSESSMENTPotential hazards or dangers are spotted

before any physical activity is undertaken.

All aspects of the sporting environment have to be considered in order to be sure that a degree of challenge is still present but that safety is fully considered.

What potential hazards/dangers may be spotted?

RISK CONTROL

Every effort has to be made by the participant and those in charge to ensure that the activity continues in a safe manner once the correct level of risk assessment has been carried out

ACTIVITY LEVELS AND NEEDSThey will obviously vary between individuals

Page 15: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

Activity Needs

Activity needs will vary between different activities because they will all place varying demands on theperformer

Page 16: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

Activity needs

Individual factors such

as age

Recreational activities

only have a requirement to take part

Competitive

activities - highly

committed

Performance Levels – top level have to dedicate a lot

of time

Activity EffectsThe level at which you perform is also going to

have an effect on you

High levels of participation

Low and infrequent

levels

Activity EffectsThe level at which you perform is also going to

have an effect on you

High levels of participation

Health benefits

Enjoyment of the social aspect

Have little or no

positive effect

Training

Page 20: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

TRAINING – turn sheet over

Who goes to a training session?

How often? Length of time?Is that free or do you have to pay?

Page 21: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

Available Time In order to become better time is

needed to train.

Professional performers will have a free choice of when to train BUT for amateur performers fitting in training times can be

hard

Page 22: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

Available funds

Amount of money you have available will also have an effect

More funding can mean:More timeBetter training facilities and

equipmentPossibility to hire a specialist

trainer or fitness coach

Page 23: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

Levels of ParticipationPerformers at the highest level will seek

to train as often as possible.

For some performers this would be on a daily basis and PERIODISATION would be considered.

This is to ensure they PEAK at the right time (competition/major tournament etc)

Page 24: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

This takes into account the competitive year:

Pre-Season – initial preparation, concentrating on fitness, developing techniques specific to activity

Peak Season – concentration on skills, ongoing fitness sessions as well as taking part in actual competition

Post-Season (or Off-Season) – mainly period of rest and recovery but still need to keep up levels of general fitness

Page 25: Learning Outcomes: ALL Discuss the risks & challenges that performers face Suggest the variety of activity levels & needs individuals need List the levels

In many activities now there are all-year-round demands on performers.
