WINTER/SPRING PROGRAM 2019

MONDAY 10 -12 One Session – February 25 Tuition $6.00 #101 - CURRENT TRENDS IN MUSICAL THEATER

Daniel Egan returns to LIR to discuss how musical theater is -- and is not -- changing in our time. New types of narratives, new styles of music, new stagings: how are they changing this field we love? And what has happened to melody?! For all the changes, what has stayed the same?

MONDAY 10 -12 One Session – March 4 Tuition $6.00 #102 - BAD GIRLS IN THE BIBLE “Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History!” sounds like it ought to be found on tee shirts and coffee mugs. Amazingly, it describes women in the Bible perfectly. Are you familiar with these women—Tamar, Rahab, Deborah, Bathsheba, Esther and others? We will travel back in time 4000 years to the land of Canaan to discover what it was like for women. We will meet intelligent, strategic, compassionate women with a sense of humor!...strong women who dared to fight for their homes, families and tribes.

Dr. Elissa Kaplan is the founder and director of Growing Projects, an educational consulting company. MONDAY 10 -12 One Session – March 11 Tuition $6.00 #103 - THE CHANGING ROLE OF WOMEN IN AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATER Dr. Daniel Egan returns to explore changing definitions of women in the American musical theater – from traditional ingénues (Laurey in Oklahoma!, Maria in West Side Story) to less traditionally defined women like Annie Oakley, Mama Rose, Dolly, Evita and Dot, to our own era and Light in the Piazza’s Margaret Johnson, Fun Home’s three Alisons and Hamilton’s Schuyler sisters. The changing role of female characters reflects changing cultural attitudes as well as new ways of telling stories with music.

MONDAY 1 -3 Two Sessions – March 18 & 25 Tuition $12.00 #104 - WOMEN ARTISTS FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY Beth S. Gersh-Nešić, Ph.D. is an art historian and director of the New York Arts Exchange, an arts educational service. This semester she will discuss:

Session 1: Women artists from the Renaissance through the Neoclassical Period (c. 1800), most notably Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith Leyster and Elisabeth Vigée-LeBrun

Session 2: Women artists from Romanticism through Post-Impressionism, most notably Rose Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, and Edmonia Lewis.

MONDAY 10 -12 Two Sessions – April 8 & 15 Tuition $12.00 #105 - JEWISH WAGONS WEST The Jews were very much among the original settlers who went West. Andree Brooks will tell us much about these people: Who they were; What propelled them to make the hazardous journey; What were some of their experiences? Stories of the Wild West, the experimental agricultural communities, the birth of the blue jeans, the key role played by the city of San Francisco, the formerly hidden contributions of the conversos as well as other Westward tales will be included in this interesting history. MONDAY 1 -3___One Session - April 8 Tuition $6.00 #106 - WENDY THE WELDER: WORK AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD IN WORLD WAR II Andrew Gustafson of Turnstile Tours will look back at the history of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and how World War II represented a major change in the culture of work but also continued traditions of female labor dating back more than a century. During WWII the Yard employed 70,000 civilian workers and built or repaired 5,000 vessels. Desperately short of labor, the Navy employed more than 10,000 women. TUESDAY 1-3 One Session - February 26 Tuition $6.00 #201 – THE AGE OF ROCK 1930 – 1980 FROM BLUES TO PUNK Professor, composer and bassist Brian Q. Torff will survey the growth and evolution of Rock music from its early blues origins in the Mississippi Delta to the brash sounds of Punk in the 1970s. The contributions of Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Soul and Motown will be analyzed for social and musical impact.

TUESDAY 1-3 One Session - March 19 Tuition $6.00 #202 – “How shalt thou hope for mercy rendering none?” JUSTICE AND MERCY IN THE MERCHANT OF VENICE Shakespeare’s complex, dark comedy is fraught with profound problems and questions: The relationship between insiders and outsiders? Is race destiny? Is revenge understandable, if not condonable? Can we find compassion for our enemies? How do we contend with hypocrisy and Schadenfreude? Dr. Mark W. Weisstuch from the Skirball Academy will lead a discussion on how these themes reverberate through the play’s high-tension trial scene. TUESDAY 10-12 One Session - March 26 Tuition $6.00 #203 - GALAPAGOS, ECUADOR Joanne Zammit, world traveler, brings us to the islands where Charles Darwin formed his theory of Natural Selection and Survival of the Fittest. See the dramatic landforms of these still growing islands. See how the flora and fauna have adapted to harsh conditions. Learn about the protection offered to keep these islands in pristine condition. Enjoy the beauty and bounty of the Galapagos.

TUESDAY 1 -3 One Session - March 26 Tuition $6.00 #204 - THE JAZZ AGE IN NEW YORK CITY 1917 – 1938 Professor, composer and bassist Brian Q. Torff will explore the development of jazz during the Harlem Renaissance and Prohibition with gangsters and speakeasies, radio and race records and the artistic achievements of Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Billie Holiday and the impact of swing on American life in the 1930s.

TUESDAY 10-12 One Session – April 9 NOTE TIME CORRECTION Tuition $6.00 #205 – AN IMPORTANT TOPIC Dr. Kevin Buterbaugh, professor of Political Science and Economics at Southern CT State College, defers his choice of topic until near presentation time when he will select an important current event. He will deliver this lecture twice.

TUESDAY 10-12 One Session – April 16 Tuition $6.00 #206 - AN IMPORTANT TOPIC ENCORE This is a REPEAT of Dr. Kevin Buterbaugh’s presentation last week. IF YOU REGISTERED FOR COURSE #205, DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS ONE. TUESDAY 1 – 3 One Session April 16 Tuition $6.00 #207 – THE NEXT RECESSION AND GOVERNMENT POLICY OPTIONS It has been nine years since the onset of the Great Recession, and the economy is growing at a pace that is producing historically low unemployment. The economic forces that create recessions are still with us, however, and it is likely that the U.S. economy will return to negative growth in the near future, given the past frequency of economic downturns. Dr. Mark LeClair, Professor at Fairfield U., will look at the forces that are likely to lead to that downturn and the constraints now faced by policy-makers in responding to declining growth. TUESDAY 10-12 One Session – May 7 Tuition $6.00 #208 - NORTHEAST ASIA AT A CROSSROADS Dr. Alexis Dudden, History Professor at the U. of CT and the author of several books, has lived in Japan and South Korea. In this class, Dr. Dudden will discuss the issues that she sees becoming increasingly important in the Far East. TUESDAY 1-3 One Session – May 7 Tuition $6.00 #209 – AN IMPROMPTU STORY From overuse perhaps the designation of “classic” has all but lost its meaning. Dr. Georgiana White will attempt to explore the essence of “classic” ----timeless appeal ---- in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

WEDNESDAY 10-12 Three Sessions – February 20, 27 & March 6 Tuition $18.00 #301 - GREAT SINGERS PAST AND PRESENT, PART 2 Continuing “Great Singers” from the Fall semester, Dr. Jerome Sehulster will explore singers from other countries including Germany, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Russia and others. Performances are from both national and international operas. WEDNESDAY 1-3 Two Sessions - February 20 & March 27 Tuition $12.00 #302 – CONVERSATIONS WITH ART This semester Helane Rheingold will discuss:

Session 1: AFRICAN-AMERICAN ARTISTS-some known, many more unknown

Session 2: PAUL GAUGUIN AND ‘LES NABIS?”-In 1890 Maurice Denis was scarcely 20 when he said ”Remember that a painting-before being a war-horse, a nude or an anecdote of some kind-is basically a flat surface covered with colors dispersed in a certain order.” WEDNESDAY 1-3 One Session – March 13 Tuition $6.00 #303 - CHINA AND CHINA: IMPERIALISM AND THE DECORATIVE ARTS In the 17th – 18th centuries there was a fascination with all things Chinese in the West. This was seen through Chinese porcelain, a valued import. Designs based on European fantasies of China reveal more about the West than about China itself. Dr. Joseph Portanova, NYU Professor, will trace some of the myths, especially those revealed by the most famous of these designs, the Willow Pattern WEDNESDAY 10-12 One Session – March 20 Tuition $6.00 #304 ASTRONOMY: THE HEAVENS AND THEIR MYTHS People have gazed at the stars since the beginning of time. Dr. Anne Peskin’s discussion will study the region around the North Pole. The North (Polar) star and those that circumnavigate it (Big, Little Dippers, Casseopia) have Indian, Greek and Swedish myths about these constellations.

WEDNESDAY 10-12 One Session – April 3 Tuition $6.00 #305 - THE STATUS OF REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS IN CONNECTICUT Claudia Connor, JD, CEO of The CT Institute of Refugees and Immigrants, will explain the ins and outs of immigration to the United States: who our immigrants are, from where have they come, why do they come? What are the differences between people seeking asylum, those who are legal refugees, and other immigrants? How do they become classified? What are the ways and what is it like to try to get to the United States? What are the differences in our immigration system since the Trump Administration? Who and what is needed to assist these people?

A refugee, now working with CIRI, will accompany our speaker, to answer many of your questions.

WEDNESDAY 1-3 One Session – April 3 Tuition $6.00 #306 – WE REMEMBER: THE POLITICS, ETHICS, AESTHETICS, AND LITERATURE OF MEMORY All literature is (as Wordsworth wrote) “emotion recollected in tranquility.” But what are the things that we “never forget”? The art of memoir-writing goes hand-in-hand with the construction of the self from deep examination. We will consider a range of literary excerpts (across time and place) that concern what “remembering” means. Dr. Frederick Roden, Professor of English at the U. of CT, will discuss the relationship between history and collective memory, and compare the private versus the public. In “life writing” we narrate our experience and existence. Why are our stories important to us and meaningful to others? WEDNESDAY 1-3 One Session – April 17 Tuition $6.00 #307 – CONNECTICUT IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Eric Chandler is actively involved in American Revolutionary Living History. This talk will discuss Connecticut’s roles as a Provision State, Arsenal and War Cavalry. WEDNESDAY 10-12 Two Sessions – May 1 & 8 Tuition $12.00 #308 - ENGLISH MIGRATION AND NATIVE AMERICANS Carmine Limone, LIR’s resident historian, will review the causes for the Great Migration from England to New England during the mid to late 1600’s and its impact on Native Americans.

WEDNESDAY 1-3 One Session – May 1 Tuition $6.00 #309– UNDERSTANDING PROVERBS You recognize the proverb “Birds of a feather flock together.” What is a proverb? Where do they originate? Who writes proverbs? How do we use them? Why have they endured through centuries? Reverend Blaine Edele will help us consider these questions and maybe come up with a few proverbs of our own. THURSDAY 1-3 One Session – April 18 Tuition $6.00 #402 - THE WORLD BETWEEN EMPIRES: ART AND IDENTITY IN THE ANCIENT MIDDLE EAST Page Knox, adjunct professor at Columbia University and educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will lecture about this upcoming exhibition at the Museum. This exhibition presents a new perspective on the art and culture of the Near East during the period of the Parthian and Roman empires' struggle for regional control (ca 100 BC - 250 AD). Objects from Timna, Petra, Jerusalem, Baalbek, Palmyra, Dura-Europos, and Hatra demonstrate how cities and their inhabitants created artistic and cultural identities between imperial powers and along the great spice and silk routes that connected them to each other and to a wider world. FRIDAY 10-12 One Session – March 1 Tuition $6.00 #501 –HOW ART EVOLVES: 500 YEARS, FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO NOW How have our markets, theologies, cultures, tools, materials, economies and science changed the production, presentation and our desires for Art? How have cultural needs determined the appearance and sale of art? What forces change how we make art and what we want and need in art? David Dunlop is an artist and Faculty Member at Silvermine.

FRIDAY 10-12 One Session – March 8 Tuition $6.00 #502 – SOUNDS AND STORYTELLING: A HISTORY OF PROGRAM MUSIC In the 19th century, many composers became enchanted with the idea that instrumental music should no longer be a simple arrangement of pleasant sounding tones. To these romantics, music was meant to tell a story, to convey imagery, to introduce characters and perhaps a narrative. Composers like Beethoven, Berlioz, Liszt and Debussy set out to evoke various tales using no singers or narrators. Dr. Gilad Harel will discuss this new style-later dubbed “program music” where composers bent and often broke the rules in what would become an important aspect of music in the Romantic period.

FRIDAY 10-12 One Session – March 29 Tuition $6.00 #503 – UNDERSTANDING LEVITICUS: THE HARDEST, AND BEST, BOOK OF THE BIBLE For most modern readers, Leviticus - the mind-numbingly repetitive collection of ritual laws regarding sacrifice and purity found at the heart of the Torah - is almost impossible to read, much less appreciate. In this session, Yale Professor, Dr. Joel Baden will explore this little-loved book, and show how despite its ostensibly boring nature, Leviticus in fact contains one of the Bible's clearest and most beautiful expressions of humanity's relationship to God.

FRIDAY 10-12 One Session – April 12 Tuition $6.00 #504 – THE EVOLUTION OF PIANO MUSIC The piano is among the most iconic of musical instruments. From its humble origin it emerged to completely supplant the harpsichord, and was championed by composers ranging from Mozart to Brahms. In this lecture, Dr. Gilad Harel will show how the instrument evolved in the 18th and 19th centuries, and how the music and musicians evolved along with it
