TOURISM IN Developing Nations
Tourism is importantfor many developing
nations likeGambia and Peru.
BUT they do notalways get a fairshare of the benefits.
![Page 6: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
We are lucky to live in this wonderful place. There is lovely scenery, beautiful beaches, exotic culture and wonderful wildlife. BUT we “own” little else.
![Page 7: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The foreign Investors own the land and take most of theprofits. They even bringemployees from theircountries so we do not getjobs.
It looks wonderful but
we are not allowed across those lawns.
![Page 8: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The airlines that transport the tourists are usually owned by
foreigners. They get paid for the trips.
So does it benefit us? How does this help our country?
![Page 9: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
So foreign countries and foreign companies gain most of the benefits.
BUT the local people have to put up with the disruption with often no benefits to themselves. Their culture is also affected.
![Page 10: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Making Tourism SustainableSustainable tourism is when:1. The place, its people and their culture are
respected.
2. The local people have their say in decisions about tourism.
3. Local people gain a fair share of the benefits from it including money.
4. There is as little damage to their environment as possible. (long term use - present and future)

PERU’S RAINFOREST
![Page 12: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Ese’eja tribeof Infierno in Peru, live in a reserve inthe Amazon rainforest
![Page 13: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The whole tribe of about 400 of us are in the tourist business! In 1996 we signed a 20 year contract with a tour operator! We had to build the lodge and they would bring the tourists. We had to get a loan to do it!
![Page 14: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
This was the deal they madewith us…….
1. We get 60% of the profits from the lodge.
2. We have an equal say with the tour operator in tourism decisions
3. We do all the jobs in the lodge and they train us where necessary.
![Page 15: Learning Goals: 1.To understand what is meant by sustainable tourism. 2.To understand how sustainable tourism can benefit a poor community](https://reader030.vdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022032705/56649dbc5503460f94aaeca9/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
4. We act as the rainforest guides for the tourists.
5. We sell the food and drink at the lodge.
6. We can sell wood carvings and other handicrafts made by the tribe at the lodge.
All the tribes folk benefit from this arrangement and we are all productively employed in our tourism business.

The benefits to the Ese’eja tribe:
1. It brings in money for a very poor tribe. They earn money from working in the lodge or selling their handicrafts through it.
2. They make use of all their traditional skills in farming, hunting, fishing and knowledge of the rainforest.

3. They are learning new skills and learning to communicate in English to the tourists.
4. The rainforest is benefiting from the care given to it by the tribe.
