I have an announcement to make. We are going for a unique field trip to learn about China.

Where are we going, Mrs. Beth?


We shall be visiting a site of historical importance. Some ancient Chinese objects have been found there. It will be interesting to examine them and learn about the history of China.


We will be meeting Dr. Dave. He is an archeologist working there.

Well, an archaeologist studies the past by digging up and examining the remains of ancient civilizations. They can learn a lot about the past by carefully examining ancient objects.

Wow, this is interesting. Will he allow us to help him dig?

Before we go there, let’s read a little about ancient China. This will be helpful when you go to the site and work.

Let’s go back to 400 B.C and see what China looked like. This was the time when pyramids were already built and Rome as a city was being founded. Jesus Christ was still to be born!

Confucius was a philosopher who encouraged people to live orderly and family-oriented life.

He taught about correct behavior and relationships, which helped to bring harmony and compassion in the time of war. He even had a school of his own.

He was a teacher like you Mrs. Beth. Did he also teach world history?

Hello children! I am Dr. Dave. I am so glad you came. We recently discovered this site and believe that together we all can find some interesting objects which can tell us more about the warring states era, in particular about Confucius.

This is regarded as the symbol of Confucianism.

And that is why we believe that this site is related to Confucius and we may find some interesting artifacts, which tell us more about him.


Dr. Dave There are two “sites” we have found so far. One is the place where he must have lived. The second site we have found could be his school .

Dr. Dave His philosophy was that strong family values forms the basis of a stable society, and there by the country.

Confucius did not have a school building, like you have today. He taught in the compound of his own house, under an old scholar tree.

He taught his students to become “gentlemen” so that they could wisely and effectively govern the state. He encouraged them to lead a disciplined and family-centered way of life.

We think that the objects or artifacts in the first site will tell us about Confucius’s life at home. While the objects in the school will shed more light on his teaching philosophy.

This instrument resembles Guqin. It is known that Confucius was a master of this instrument. He even taught this in his school. He considered education incomplete without learning music.

To become a perfect gentlemen, Music was one of the six arts he taught his students. Let’s look at other objects. May be we get more clues about his teaching philosophy.
