Learning difficulty no barrier to success Sheet metal apprentice, Aaron Scarce completed his apprenticeship earlier this year, being the first ECA apprentice to graduate the Dyslexia Support Pro- gram. Aaron had been diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, and despite an impressive array of pre- vocational training, had failed to secure an Engineer- ing apprenticeship until his talents were recognised by East Coast Apprenticeships. “I had applied at other group training organisations and struggled through some of their testing.” said Aa- ron ECA CEO Alan Sparks said, “We suspected learning difficulties were playing a role and developed the Dyslexia Support Program to help break down barri- ers.” Host employer Steridium has been so impressed with Aaron’s abilities, he’s been offered a full-time position. “Aaron’s very conscientious, good at what he does, he learns things quickly, and the sort of work we do suits Aaron. That’s the sort of person we want working for this business in the future.”

Cody Stibbards started his Horticulture traineeship with host YMCA of Bundaberg in December 2017. Some of the duties Cody does day to day is hedging, pruning, whipper snipping and mowing. Cody also partakes in landscaping tasks such as constructing new garden beds. Cody really enjoys working at YMCA and attends the Bundaberg TAFE campus once a month for the theory side of his traineeship.

The YMCA of Bundaberg Inc is a not-for profit charity, operating under a license issued by YMCA of Austral-ia. In addition to the traditional offerings of Childcare, Health, Fitness and sporting activities, the YMCA of Bundaberg has expanded locally to become a major provider of disability support services, youth and sen-iors programs to the Bundaberg ccommunity. YMCA of Bundaberg have been a host employer with ECA since 2017 and currently have 3 trainees and are looking at hosting many more in the future.
