Hello everyone, We seem to have arrived at Easter in record time and I think we have had a productive first term. At the Precinct Campus, our senior students have hit the ground running and it’s been terrific to see the positivity from all the students, especially our Year 12’s. Churchill Campus has also had a busy term capped off recently by a great day with AGL executives who visited the campus to help out. (There is a story about that later in this issue.) Morwell Campus has also enjoyed a positive start and the recent Harmony Day was a great success. Our college house swimming sports carnival was a standout and helped by a hot day, record numbers of students participated in a well organised carnival. Across our college there are so many trips, excursions, learning opportunities and other activities to engage our students and the amount of positive feedback that I receive about our programs, teachers, support staff and students is so gratifying. Our work with the Smith Family and the Gippsland Education Precinct continues to provide benefits across our college. We are lucky to have such good friends and partners. The recent proposal that will see Ballarat University partner with Monash and eventually take over the Gippsland campus is a positive move in many ways. There will be some loss of kudos in having a world ranked university in our backyard, but over the years despite many great efforts, our communities’ participation in tertiary education has still lagged behind that of the most of the state despite this asset. As a college, and supported by our College council, we feel that if the initiative is well resourced and has a wide range of courses and different and more flexible ways to access them it will be a great advantage for Gippsland students. We feel that more of our students will be eligible to enrol and will be motivated to enrol as a result of the change. If this is the result of the change, it would be a good one! I think we should all keep an open mind on this topic and continue to participate in the ongoing discussion. There is a website (http://www.monash.edu.au/gippsland-future/) where you can contribute as well as find out more information and I urge you all to spend a bit of time thinking about this important change in our education landscape. Well, we have one term down, have a great Easter, don’t eat too much chocolate and we shall see you back next term at Kurnai College. Hello everyone,

We seem to have arrived at Easter in record time and I think we have had a productive first term. At the Precinct Campus, our senior students have hit the ground running and it’s been terrific to see the positivity from all the students, especially our Year 12’s. Churchill Campus has also had a busy term capped off recently by a great day with AGL executives

who visited the campus to help out. (There is a story about that later in this issue.) Morwell Campus has also enjoyed a positive start and the recent Harmony Day was a great success. Our college house swimming sports carnival was a standout and helped by a hot day, record numbers of students participated in a well organised carnival.

Morwell News

Morwell Campus School Captain Amy Radford has been busy raising funds for The World’s Greatest Shave. The Morwell campus SRC recently held a Crazy Hair/Out of Uniform day to help Amy with her fundraising efforts. Through donations from students and staff the SRC raised $460.00 for this great cause. If you would like to help Amy with her fundraising efforts by making a donation please contact reception at the Morwell Campus on 5165 0600. While other students were not quite as brave as Amy, many staff and students came to school with some “interesting” colours and styles. Those with the best Crazy Hair from each year level took away a cinema pass which hopefully they will be able to use during the upcoming holidays!

Winners were:

Year 10 - Emily Martin and Brad Rogers

Year 9 - Emma Darling and Marnie Bunker

Year 8 - Damon Davonport and Chelsea Radford

Year 7 - Zac Brown and Taylor Hess

The role of a PBS Student Leader is to work together with their team to develop the school as a positive learning community where students, their families, and their teachers, feel that they belong. Students at the Precinct Campus are welcoming their newly elected PBS Student Leaders for 2103. After rigorous interviews and ballot voting, the representatives, and the school community, can be assured that they have what it takes to do a great job. The team are settling into their new roles, developing communication channels, and planning for the year.

One of the most challenging aspects of the role is to bring the voice of the student body to the forefront of school business. It is this responsibility that the PBS Student Leaders take most seriously as it is the main ways that students can affect change and see developments in the school that are student driven.

We are looking forward to a great year in the PBS Student Leader team, and whilst our time currently may be spent organising the Yr. 12 student jumpers (an important task indeed) we must also look to the future of the team including the issues of the behaviour matrix, the development of the VCAL and all other concerns that students raise. We are excited about the year ahead and our continuing work with the students, for the students.

Year 12 Student Leaders for 2013 are Cassie Hooimeyer, Jasmine Kennedy, Tamara Kemp, Georgia Zammit, Kaitlyn Turner, Bethany Leak, Shannon Vansambeek, Dylan Campbell, Nathan Noblet and Jacob McCubbin.

Year 11 Student Leaders are Nyabhan Jiath, Meg Van Rooy, Hayden Stephens and Zack Smith.

School Captains are Shannon Vansambeek, Dylan Campbell, Meg Van Rooy and Hayden Stephens.

Friday, March 15th saw a team of AGL executives arrive at Churchill campus to contribute to our Learning Community. AGL, one of Australia’s oldest companies owns Loy Yang A and is a sponsor of the Kurnai Education Hub Project which is auspiced through the Smith Family. Apart from AGL’s generous financial contribution to the Hub, AGL will support a range of activities across Kurnai that will benefit our students in a range of ways but especially in the pathways and careers area. The first of these planned activities happened on Friday and according to our Hub team, Julie Nethercote and Angela Northover was a great success.

The team of 9 AGL execs worked with our Hands On Learning Team on a range of landscaping projects for the morning session. The executive and student team completed a host of planting, mulching and barking projects across the school ground. At the end of this work session, AGL donated the new wheelbarrows and gardening tools to the school. A break for lunch, where the AGL team met with our college careers team and talked of the huge range of employment opportunities that AGL offer our local community. After lunch a group of students ‘career speed dated’ the execs and learnt about the job each does as part of the AGL team.

‘AGL want to be involved in the Latrobe Valley Community, we want to employ Latrobe people and part of our involvement extends to our relationship with the Kurnai Learning Hub’ explained Anthony Fowler, the General Manager of the Merchant Energy team.

Over the course of the year other events will be rolled out where Kurnai Students can learn more about career opportunities at AGL and participate in Work Experience and similar activities.

All participants on the day observed a real genuine desire to engage with the AGL team and all participants were impressed with their hard work and positive approach. Our students, teachers and campus all benefitted from their participation in this day.

Like their company’s motto, the AGL team really were… ‘Energy in Action’!
