Dear Parents / Carers,

Mid Term: This week marks half term with the end of the 2015 school year, fast approaching. It is a busy me for teach-

ers and students, finalising and assessing term 4 units, preparing for end of term reporng and the school musical and

consolidang core learning expected at each year level. Home learning supports your child’s mastery of reading, spelling

and number facts. Expect that your child puts in the me and effort to achieve—even just 10 minutes a night.

A new start date for the 2016 school year: Return to school day in 2016 is now Wednesday, 27th January. Monday the

25th January, now becomes a staff development day. School Holiday dates for the 2016 year and following years are

found on www. h6p://educaon.qld.gov.au/public_media/calendar/2016-2020.html

Welcome to 2016 Prep Students and their families: Over the next four Wednesdays, we welcome our new prep stu-

dents to a6end school from 9:00—10:00 in a Prep class. While they are busy being orientated into their new environ-

ment, their parents are invited to parent informaon sessions on oral language which is the foundaon to all literacy,

early reading, early wring and early number which will elaborate on the development of these concepts. It is so ex-

cing to see children at this developmental level growing as young readers and writers!

Cyber Smart : Unfortunately only one parent a6ended the parent informaon session on knowing the world of social

media that young people engage in and what to be aware of. It is evident that some students as young as in Year 3 have

Facebook pages, when it is a requirement that they be over 13 to request their Facebook account. To get this account

they make up their age, whether it be 13 , 18, 28, 40 or whatever they pick! What they are not aware of however, is that

if they choose an older age group, they will get adversing suitable for this age group and like friends of this age, clearly

totally unsuitable for any child.

Parents need to be aware of what their child is doing on their devices. Parents should have access to their accounts and

be their friend. All social media should be done in the vicinity of adults and not in the privacy of bedrooms. Families

need to make rules about use of devices e.g never at the dinner table; all phones on the kitchen bench by 8:00pm etc.

The informaon given about puDng photos and personal informaon up was parcularly pernent. Personal & identy

safety is paramount and prospecve employers can check profiles! Everyone needs to know how to secure their sites.

A strong warning was given to take down any KIK site that children may be on. Kik Messenger is an instant messaging

applicaon for mobile devices. This app has a 17+ age restricon which has no verificaon of identy, enabling its

users to connect with strangers. The app can be installed on iPod touch and iPad devices as well as smart phones.

Instead of using phone numbers or real names to contact each other, each Kik member has a user name. No Pri-

mary aged student 17 should be using Kik Messenger. Contacts can be blocked, however this does not stop the

inial contact from strangers on this app. Conversaons and images can't be viewed publicly, which makes it much

harder for parents to monitor Kik.

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS:

Senior Gold: Miss Cronin Senior Gold enjoyed presenng their PowerPoints

(Technology task for Semester 2) on Assembly last week.

We would have loved to show everyone’s efforts, but were

only able to show the work of Marne, Wayan, Keito, Len-

ismaria, Lucan and Ashley. However, well done to all stu-

dents as your ICT skills were showcased in your work and

everyone has improved. We are enjoying studying the novel

of “Storm Boy”. We have completed the book and are now

discussing the plot, seDng and characters. This week we

hope to watch the film version. We will then be wring a

narrave comparing the novel and film. We are also enjoy-

ing the new Science unit as we discuss animal’s structural

features and the adaptaons that they have made for the

environment.

Thank you to Senior Gold for the World Teachers Day card.

HPE News:Katrina Irvine Jackson from Queensland Cricket was back for our final

week of the cricket unit. Years 2 to 6 played Diamond Crick-

for maximum involvement. Prep and Year 1 pracced

throwing in pairs and catching using a cone. They also

played a couple of games that involved aiming an overarm

throw to either hit or knock down the stumps. Well done

Junior Gold for all having their hats!

see this connue on an ongoing basis. I would encourage

you to consider playing cricket as a family, it's a great game

you could enjoy down the beach over summer.

Environmental Club News:Mrs Aleman

Last Monday the environmental club with the help of Mrs

Aleman, Mrs Marshall Mrs Atherton cooked up a delicious

sr fry. We cooked 190 cups of sr fry. The sr fry ingredi-

ents were all grown and harvested from our school vegeta-

ble garden. The sweet peas, green beans, carrots and garlic

were all picked and prepared at school. It was great to see

the enthusiasm and pride of the environmental club mem-

bers. They loved handing out the delicious sr fry to the

enre school and staff. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed

tasng our school grown veggies. This week and next week

we will be harvesng the rest of the vegetables for 2015.

There are 2 different types of cucumbers to be harvested

along with some cherry tomatoes and corn! A big thank you

to Mrs Marshall for helping with the cuDng of the beans
