Supporting ALN Pupils: Developing Independence through Assessment for Learning

This programme explores this key principle in relation to the identification of the most effective assessment for learning (AfL) strategies for pupils with ALN. It will consider the way teachers use AfL to pinpoint learning needs of all pupils. In addition we will consider how to employ specialised assessment techniques for identified learners

Practitioners will work together within a network to develop strategies that are meaningful, manageable and motivating for pupils’ practice as well as utilising enquiry-based learning opportunities that can be utilised and give focus to driving change in their own settings.

Developing Pedagogy and Curriculum: Using Enquiry to Improve Practice

Pedagogy lies at the heart of what it means to be an excellent teacher. Our challenge is to develop ourselves as reflective practitioners, engaging in an evidence-based approach to successful classroom practices.

This programme will offer practitioners an opportunity to join a research network that seeks to develop an understanding of pedagogical principles through an action research process. In the interests of subsidiarity and developing a local curriculum, practitioners will need to consider areas that they would like to develop.

Practitioners will:

» Be supported by Cardiff University » Work collaboratively to apply the research into

classroom-based practice » Engage in classroom study activities » Engage in joint practice development

Previous attendees have utilised such research to integrate into masters level study.

Putting Families First: Using Parental Engagement to Raise Attainment of All Groups of Learners

One of the enabling objectives of the National Mission is ‘to build strong and inclusive schools committed to excellence, equity and wellbeing’.

This involves working in partnership with a range of stakeholders, particularly parents. One of the most effective means of closing the attainment gap is to build relationships with parents, supporting them with home-learning and key elements of wellbeing.

This programme supports schools in developing this aspect of the wellbeing agenda, focusing particularly on the use of the Family Engagement Officer, and how a whole-school approach can lead to improved learner outcomes. Practical examples and resources will be shared and action plans will be developed to support the next steps for this area of work. Recent research relevant to parental involvement will also be explored.

Strategic use of Digital Technology for Whole School Improvement of Learning and Teaching

‘Digital competence plays an increasingly powerful role in the lives of children and young people...’ Successful Futures

This programme will provide practical steps on developing and embedding the digital competence framework (DCF) to maximise opportunities for learners. The focus will be upon how schools can formulate and implement a bespoke strategic plan to ensure digital technology is a key component of successful and innovative whole school improvement. Practitioners will be given the opportunity to audit their practice, trial and evaluate various digital strategies and then measure the impact on pupils.

There will be opportunities for collaborative work to secure the improvement of learning experiences in all schools. The programme considers the four purposes, reinforces the three cross-curriculum responsibilities and provides opportunities to practise them, through the use of authentic contexts for learning.

Focus on Pedagogy: Improving Learning and Teaching

Pedagogy lies at the heart of what it means to be an effective teacher; ‘it combines theoretical and practical knowledge and skills with fine judgement about what is required to promote effective learning in particular contexts’ [Successful Futures]

This programme will support practitioners to focus on the elements of effective teaching, making pedagogical decisions based on context and purpose. There will be an opportunity for practitioners to engage with the EEF Learning and Teaching Toolkit and the Successful Futures review as a starting point in considering what makes effective learning and teaching.

Practitioners will engage in professional dialogue around the 12 pedagogical principles and the changes in practice needed for the Curriculum for Wales. Practitioners will reflect on their current practice, what works well and the concept of backwards design for planning learning. There will be an opportunity to utilise effective tools to develop approaches needed to develop a process curriculum, maintaining a focus on the overall purposes of the Curriculum for Wales.

Developing Learner Autonomy: Pupil Voice in the Foundation Phase

‘Good teaching and learning encourages children and young people to take increasing responsibility for their own learning’ [Successful Futures]

This programme will consider ways to empower children in the curriculum planning process, giving them ownership of enhanced provision to improve levels of wellbeing, increased autonomy and engagement in learning. Practitioners will have the opportunity to observe first-hand practice in the foundation phase; talk to children about their curriculum planning roles and responsibilities; plan and implement strategies as part of a small-scale innovation project in their own setting. Practitioners will reflect on the impact of their work and the outcomes for learners in their settings in a final evaluative session.

Prior to participating in the programme, interested practitioners may wish to refer to Estyn’s ‘Active and Experiential Learning: Effective foundation phase practice in delivering literacy and numeracy in Year 1 and Year 2 December 2017’ which references Tongwynlais Primary School’s work in this area.

Challenging More Able and Talented (MAT) Pupils to Succeed

The vision of the new curriculum is embodied in the four purposes. Good teaching and learning challenges all learners.

Whilst the programme will consider the four purposes, we will focus specifically on :

» All pupils to become ambitious capable learners who… set themselves high standards and enjoy challenge…are questioning and solving problems

» All pupils to become enterprising, creative contributors who … think creatively to reframe and solve problems…identify and grasp opportunities…lead and play different roles in teams effectively and responsibly

The programme will consider how creative and innovative provision for more able pupils supports schools in raising standards for this group. The principles within the NACE Challenge Award will be discussed, supporting schools in reflecting on their practice. Practitioners will audit existing provision and have the opportunity to collaboratively develop an action plan to be used in their own settings.

Assessment for Learning – A Focus on Pedagogy to Improve Practice

Good teaching means employing assessment for learning principles.

[Successful Futures]

The development of this key pedagogical principle forms the basis of developing strategies to encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own learning.

This programme will provide an opportunity to critically evaluate current practice in the core elements of assessment for learning principles (AfL). Working collaboratively, practitioners will consider the place of AfL within the curriculum and debate pedagogical change required to enact the Curriculum for Wales as intended.

There will be an opportunity to engage with current research, as well as develop an enquiry-based approach to your own professional learning as outlined in the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership. The programme will also consider how AfL connects with some of the other pedagogical principles.

Making the Curriculum Accessible

How do we link pedagogy and research with provision to ensure that pupils access the curriculum, make excellent progress and fulfil their potential?

Many pupils have a wide range of Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and might have issues in fully accessing the curriculum. A secondary school should be able to choose from a range of different tools to secure a highly effective learning environment whilst promoting wellbeing and equity for learners.

The programme will focus on the new ALN bill and research on inclusivity. It will consider appropriate provision for secondary schools to consider when planning a curriculum that embodies the breadth and depth appropriate for its learners. A range of strategies will be considered based on experiences of what works in a particular context. Suitable for KS2 (transition), KS3, KS4 and Post 16 practitioners

Practitioners will reflect on their own practice and assess their next steps as they prepare a school curriculum that echoes ‘Successful Futures’.

Establishing an Enquiry-Based Culture to Raise Standards

The most valuable resource that all teaches have is each other, without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspectives.

[Robert John Meehan]

This programme will explore how to develop an enquiry-based approach in a self-improving system. A key principle to developing highly effective pedagogical approaches in the classroom is to utilise structured engagement in reflective practice and collaborative enquiry including action research for practitioners. The programme will support schools to become learning organisations, with practitioners encouraged to engage in enquiry to investigate and extend their practice.

This programme will support the development of enquiry tools and approaches which systematically support practitioners to use data driven methodologies to improve outcomes for all learners. Practitioners will be challenged to reflect on current practice and trial alternative approaches to further improve outcomes. This will support the ambition of Successful Futures in making our pupils reflect and engage in enquiry in order that success is achievable for all.

Making progress: Assessment and Feedback in the 21st Century Classroom

Feedback is highlighted as being one of the most effective classroom strategies for impacting pupil progress [Sutton trust teacher toolkit]; Successful Futures also identifies assessment for learning (AfL) as a key pedagogical principle. However, teachers continue to rely on marking as their most used form of assessment rather than a tool to bridge the knowledge gap.

AfL strategies can also support practitioners reduce their workload by making pupils more responsible for their own learning. Using the mantra ‘meaningful, motivational and manageable’, practitioners will be introduced to ways that teachers can build pupils’ capacity to be ambitious and capable learners using visible learning strategies and effective feedback. Practitioners will reflect upon their current practice as well as considering an evidence base from relevant research and pupil voice to support them develop their pedagogy in a collaborative professional learning forum.

Progression in the Curriculum for Wales

“By its very nature, learning involves progression. To assist in its emergence, teachers need to understand the pathways along which students are expected to progress”. [Learning Progressions: Supporting Instruction and Formative Assessment]

This programme will explore the vision of ‘assessing what matters’, keeping assessment at the heart of learning as outlined in Successful Futures. The programme will investigate progression in learning, utilising the evidence base provided by the CAMAU team in support of curriculum reform. Practitioners will have the opportunity to engage in professional discussions on curriculum reform, exploring how assessment might be focused on what is needed. Successful Futures suggests that the achievement outcomes should be framed as broad expectations achievable over a period of time. They should be “reference points, providing a road map for each individual child and young person’s progress in their learning and not universal expectations of the performance of all children and young people at fixed points” Successful Futures.

Developing Resilience and Improving Attitudes

These sessions are intended to improve understanding of how learning and teaching approaches can develop two specific groups of learners, namely:

1. Boys who are able but lack the motivation for success.

2. More able girls who struggle with issues relating to wellbeing and resilience.

The issue of boys’ poor levels of motivation and attitude is one that remains. Y Pant is currently involved in a research project with Cardiff Met which will deepen our understanding and pedagogical approaches to this issue, building on academic levels of enquiry. The collaboration with Cardiff Met will also focus on able girls who struggle with high levels of anxiety and a worrying lack of resilience.

In these sessions we will be drawing upon current and new research, speaking to pupils, observing lessons and discussing our findings. The programme is aligned with CSC’s Readiness Tool and seeks to focus, more specifically on Pe8 and Pe11 elements, and more broadly our 2020 Vision. This will be an enquiry led programme, with intersessional tasks. The sessions will involve presentations, discussion and input from Y Pant staff as well as HEI collaboration.

Practitioners will learn from each other and will be encouraged to take thinking to a deeper level. They will be expected to undertake inter-sessional activities, prepare specific lessons and parts of lessons and to conduct enquiry-based learning into their own practice in order to reach a shared understanding of the most impactful pedagogical principles on pupil progress and attainment. For this programme to be successfully rolled out in your school, it is advised that practitioners should attend in triads. This will allow for mutual support, coaching, mentoring and collaboration in order to take the learning to scale.

Delivering Consistent High Quality Teaching to Impact Learning Experiences and Outcomes (Improving Teacher Programme)

As the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership identify, ‘teaching and learning is paramount. Practitioners consistently secure the best outcomes for learners through progressively refining teaching,

influencing learners and advancing learning’.

Having finished induction, qualified practitioners often spend many years in the classroom without access to a strategy that will help them refine and develop their practice. Drawing on evidence effective learning and teaching, the Improving Teacher Programme (ITP), will refresh and enrich pedagogical principles and approaches.

Practitioners will be expected to undertake inter-sessional challenges and be prepared to monitor the success of new strategies and share findings with each other in order to create a shared understanding of what impacts on pupil outcomes.
