UCOP Learning and Development Programs, Courses and Services

Building organizational capability and talent is a priority for the Office of the President. Providing opportunities for individuals to learn and grow in their careers is essentialto mastering current responsibilities and preparing for growth and changes in thework environment. We are pleased to provide these developmental programs tosupport the organization and our staff’s learning objectives.

The development opportunities listed in this brochure are designed to meet the keyneeds of our UCOP employees. Managers are encouraged to work with theirdirect reports to identify the most appropriate programs to support professional development and enrichment.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (MSAP)

“Investing Today in the Leaders of Tomorrow”

TheManagementSkillsAssessmentProgram(MSAP)isdesignedto strengthen the engagement and preparation of high-potential UC supervisors, managers and professionals in an intensive, off-site assessment center experience for early career managers. MSAPisofferedeachspringinnorthernCalifornia.

TrainedassessorsguideMSAPparticipantsthroughstructuredexercisesandofferfeedbackaboutobservedstrengthsanddevelopmentareas.MSAPisauniqueassessmentcenterexperi-ence that, over time, cumulatively builds a valuable talent pipeline thatassistsupwardmobilityandtalentdeploymentsasworkforceneeds evolve into the future.

Components include:

• Pre-programpreparation• SimulatedUCmanagementscenarios• Constructive,behavioralfeedbackfromtrainedassessors• Programfollow-upanddevelopmentplanning

BUSINESS OFFICER INSTITUTE (BOI)

UC systemwide session offered annually

The Business Officer Institute (BOI) is a three-day residential program offered by the Office of the President for all UC facilities. Theinstituteaddressesissuesofspecificconcerntotheorgani-zationandcoversarangeoftopics,suchasbudgetandfinance,audit and internal controls, research administration, human resourcesandinformationtechnology.Abusinessofficeris definedasanyindividual“havingbroadresponsibilityforthe administrative functions of academic or administrative depart-mentsinbudgetandfinance,humanresources,payroll,internalcontrols and sponsored projects.”

Those attending gain:

LIVE THEATER SEXUAL HARASSMENT AVOIDANCE TRAINING

FOR MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS

Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination based on sex and can occur in many forms and under many different circumstances.

TocomplywithAB1825,theUniversityofCaliforniarequirestwohours of sexual harassment prevention education for all supervisory andmanagement-levelemployees.Trainingisrequiredeverytwoyears. This session provides course materials in a live theater, ahighlyinteractivetrainingformatinwhichtofulfilltherequirement.

Managersandsupervisorsmustbeawareoftheirresponsibilitiesand accountability for failure to prevent and correct sexual harassmentintheworkplace.Partoftheirresponsibilities includes learning to recognize sexual harassment and the appro-priatecorrectiveactionstotakeintheeventofanoccurrence.

UCOP MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The UCOP Mentorship Program is a yearlong volunteer program that pairs experienced and successful Office of the President leaders andprofessionals—fromalldepartments—withcareerstaffwhoareseekingtodevelopprofessionally.

Theprogramprovidesasupportivestructureinwhichparticipantscan cultivate contacts, explore challenges and enhance effective-nessastheydesigntheirpersonalgrowthandcareerpathsattheOffice of the President. The program also provides the opportunity to gather information, develop peer support, learn more about management and better understand the organizational culture of the Office of the President.

Mentors are experienced Office of the President managers and professionalsinclassificationsatPSS5orabove.Mentorsare well-respectedadvisorsandcoacheswhoarewillingtoshare their experiences.

MenteesarecareerOfficeofthePresidentstaffmembersdrawnfromclassificationsPSS1–5.ThoseclassifiedinlevelPSS5areeligible to participate as either mentors or mentees.

Important elements for the process are goal setting, clear communication ofexpectations,constructivefeedback,empoweringothers,effectivedelegationand an effective appraisal process. Most of our results are achieved through managing people.
