Learning Agility:Unlock the Lessons of Experience
Learning AgilityExperience is vital to your success, but merely having an experience (such as a challenging new job or a stretch assignment) isn’t enough. Savvy learners know how to extract the essential lessons within each experience and apply them to future situations. This interactive workshop designed by the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) provides tools and skills to become more learning agile. Learning and applying the four components of CCL’s approach to learning agility will put you on the path to making the most from your experiences and position you to succeed when faced with new, challenging situations. This standard kit includes a facilitator guide and 25 participant kits.
Learning Agility Posters act as a visual aid in the classroom for the feedback strategies.
See sample on page 11
The Facilitator Guide is your roadmap to success. Inside you’ll find an overview of the course, learning objectives, timeframes, a supply list, and room requirements. It also provides step-by-step guidance on every slide and activity outlining how to prepare, what to say, and what to do at each step.
The Workshop Slide Deck helps participants connect to the material, gives key instructions when needed, and allows them to focus on the content.
Each facilitator is also provided with the following electronic resources:

Do:
Review workshop goals and outcomes.
Say:
We have a lot of content to cover in this workshop, so remaining on task within the time-frame allotted is important. To stay on task, if we approach a topic that you want to discuss in further detail but time doesn’t permit, write the topic on the Parking Lot chart for us to discuss at the end of the workshop during the Closing section. If you have a question but the timing doesn’t seem right to ask, write your question or thought as well.

Do:
Take a brief moment to introduce special guests or secondary facilitators, and then have participants introduce themselves to the class.
Show: Slide 5, Learning Orientation
Say:
The two images are representative of two kinds of learners. The first type of learner focuses on depth, an individual whose career path is consistent with being an expert in their field. They excel in their functional area, do well in situations that are similar to things they have done before, and enjoy being experts.
The second type of learner focuses on breadth, tends to get bored easily, and seeks variety and new challenges. They excel in first-time and new situations by using what they learned in previous circumstances and adapting it to fit current conditions.

Say:
Based upon the learning orientation descriptions, you may have identified with one more than the other. However, there may be attributes from both types of learning orientation that apply to you.
Do:
Turn to page 5 in your workbooks.
Say:
Read through both lists on page 5 and check all the characteristics that describe you.
Do:
Wait for 1 to 2 minutes and continue.
Show: Slide 7, Not an Either-Or Decision
Say:
Depth of skills and breadth of experience is not an either-or decision. One is not better than the other. Being aware of your learning orientation is the precursor to refining or developing your learning agility.
For instance, if you are a learner who focuses on depth, being placed in a new situation outside of your expertise may be very challenging for you. Becoming more learning agile will help you function when placed in this new situations not related to your expertise.
On the other hand, when breadth-oriented learners are faced with situations that lack variety and are routine by nature, they will be aware of when and how to seek new opportunities that will benefit their career growth.
Next, we’re going to identify a recent challenging experience you’ve had, and you will be referring to this challenge throughout the workshop to help you gain insight into how learning agile you are and the areas where you may benefit from developing.

Learning Agility in
ActionIt was early 2014, and the Ebola virus was
beginning its deadly spread through portions of Western Africa. As the outbreak crept ever closer
to Liberia’s crowded capital, Monrovia, Dr. Jerry Brown, medical director of the ELWA hospital, was concerned. What
might be the consequences of the outbreak in a city of over four million people, with only a handful of ambulances and no established isolation wards?
Dr. Brown realized that something needed to be done and quickly translated his concerns into action. Without any direct training in the treatment of the virus and no infectious disease experts in the country to reach out to, Dr. Brown and his team went about preparing themselves—not yet knowing the scope of the problem that would eventually come their way.
When the virus reached Monrovia, Dr. Brown and his team immediately found themselves fighting multiple battles. Before the first ambulance arrived, staff were refusing to administer treatment and even resigning. Dr. Brown had to persuade staff and lead by example to help overcome others’ fears and uncertainties. That was just the beginning. Government officials, aid agencies, suppliers, and others all had to be called upon and persuaded to lend their efforts to stemming the crisis. SA

Score one for conventional wisdom: CCL research shows that experience is indeed the best teacher. Specifically, we derive significantly more value in what we learn from our own experiences than from what we learn through others (bosses, colleagues, coaches, etc.) or formal learning (courses, training, etc.). Academic researchers and organizational practitioners now recognize that a deliberate focus on learning from experience is one of the most valuable approaches to developing the leadership skills that drive long-term career success.
Three aspects of our experience make this learning even more valuable. The first is quantity. The sheer number of distinct learning experiences we’ve accumulated provides us with the “raw material” for learning. The more experiences, the better for potential learning. The second is quality, or richness, of experience. Not all learning experiences are equal. Experiences with characteristics such as novelty, complexity, and high stakes offer greater opportunity for learning than those that are familiar, straightforward, and low risk. Third, diversity of experience matters. The more we encounter new types of people and situations that require different skills for success, the more we can potentially learn.
We’ll explore these aspects in more detail later. For now, it’s important to understand that while quantity, quality, and diversity of experience are very important, experience alone is not enough. There’s one more critical variable to take into account—some individuals excel relative to others in their ability to learn from their experience.

Role of Experience
