LearnEast Training Plans

The Essex Experience

Training at two levels:1. Needs of the project

Information and skills

2. How people feel

Attitudes and feelings

Both – from the viewpoint of beneficiaries and staff

The LearnEast training plan:

• Written as part of the bid

• Splits training into three levels

• ESF expectations of staff skills

Underlying the training:

• Learners are individuals with unique learning needs

• Project is about equity of access

• Project is about involving people in shaping their learning

Practical issues for learners:

• Access and accessibility

• Learning environment

• Appropriate equipment

• Appropriate learning packages

Just as importantly it’s about:

• Building learners’ confidence in their abilities

• Getting over previous negative experiences

• Learners need to have confidence we’ll deliver

Training needs to offer:

• Understanding of issues facing learners

• Practical support we can offer

• Importance of working with the learners and with partner organisations

Where we want to get to – we want to shift the balance of power to the learner!

We want to empower learners to :

• Work with us on their learning plans

• Act as role models /mentors for each other

• Make suggestions for change

• Challenge us

• Make their own choices for the future

Staff attitudes and feelings:

• About the process

• The effectiveness of cascade

• Turning theory into practice

Uncovering personal feelings about working with target groups:

• Fear

• Threat

• Insecurity

Why are we doing this project?

• At a range of levels

• How staff use this understanding

• Project Managers accepting reality

Staff developing as individuals:

• Finding space to develop

• Allowing development through talk

• Not stifling development

Practical examples from our training

• Learners participating!

• Use colleagues’ experiences and experiences of beneficiary organisations

• Groupwork to think through the barriers and explore good practice

• Putting together support information

• Staff role play talking to learners

• Following up training with talking to potential learners – testing out the training!

Training is not just about the learning sessions. It’s ongoing within our LearnEast project.
