Welcome to Learn with Derby Museums! We hope you fi nd this wall planner and the informati on on it helpful for the coming school year.

Derby Museums off ers a wealth of school sessions across our three city centre sites, helping you to both cover your Nati onal curriculum needs and engage in memorable experiences with your pupils - in inspirati onal learning spaces!

We listen to our teachers and have introduced a number of new sessions to meet the requirements of a changing Nati onal curriculum (see curriculum mapping matrix). We’re always happy to hear your thoughts.

TIME TRAVEL TOYSPICKFORD’S HOUSE

Pupils must ‘discover’ the Toy Chest. They will think about life before electricity and batt eries and have the opportunity to play with a range of moving toys that do not need batt eries to fi nd out how they work. Pupils will identi fy what ‘forces’ are involved. A modern Toy Chest is also available containing a selecti on of modern equivalents. Pupils must match them up and try both versions, making comparisons and deciding which they like best and why.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKEYour pupils will have the opportunity to make a traditi onal toy to take away.

HOUSES & HOMESPICKFORD’S HOUSE

A member of the 18th century Pickford family will welcome your pupils to the house, encouraging them to noti ce and discuss the similariti es and diff erences between this house and their own. The group will have a guided tour around the house. On the upper fl oor, they will be tasked with matching dolls of master/mistress and servants to their appropriate rooms through Q&A sessions and they will then use the House’s handling collecti on to investi gate mystery household objects.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKEEach pupil will have the opportunity to make a clay house plaque to take away. Both are relevant to the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 1: History that all pupils, “understand historical concepts such as conti nuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, diff erence and signifi cance, and use them to make connecti ons, draw contrasts, analyse trends, (and) frame historically-valid questi ons…(pupils should)…learn about signifi cant historical events, people and places in their own locality”.

ADVENTURES IN THE STONE AGEMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

What kind of world did we live in 40,000 years ago? How did we survive towards the end of an ice age, with technologies based upon stone, wood, antlers, bones and fi re – and upon human ingenuity! This interacti ve and hands-on session examines the ti me frame of the Palaeolithic era and considers climate, geography and lifestyles – before history began!

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to create their own piece of prehistoric art. This session supports pupils being taught about ‘changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age’ (Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History), by examining the ti mespans of prehistory (Palaeolithic and Neolithic) in relati on to the historical periods studied on the curriculum.

SECRETS OF THE MUMMIESMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

You will be met by our costumed High Priestess, Azziza. Her Highness will lead you into the gallery to describe life in Ancient Egypt and share some fascinati ng stories about objects in the Museum. All pupils will have the opportunity to dress as ancient Egypti ans. The class will be split into 2 groups. Half will discover the process of mummifi cati on using replica objects and a willing volunteer, whilst the others visit our Mummies and the Egypti an collecti on. The class will all parti cipate to ensure the dead will live for eternity in the Egypti an aft erlife!

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to make their own clay shabti to take away. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History: “pupils…know and understand signifi cant aspects of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisati ons: the expansion and dissoluti on of empires: characteristi cs of non-European societi es…pupils should be taught about the achievements of the earliest civilisati ons”, (including Ancient Egypt).

ROMAN DERBYMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

The session begins with costumed guide, Senilis the Roman Pott er, meeti ng the children. He will share tales about his life as a soldier in the fort of Derventi o using the objects on display at the Museum to illustrate his story. Derby is well-known for its large Roman cemetery and pupils will take part in recreati ng the elaborate customs of a Roman funeral.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to make their own replica Derbyshire-ware pot to take away. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage

2: History - See Secrets of the mummies above and, “At Key stage 2, pupils should be taught about: The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain. This could include…’Romanisati on’ of Britain: sites such as Caerwent* and the impact of technology, culture and beliefs. (*in this case Derventi o – the Roman name for Derby).

VIKINGS!MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

The session begins with an explorati on of the Viking sett lement of Britain and the confl icts with the Anglo-Saxons, with parti cular reference to Derby. Pupils will examine a replica Viking burial, complete a Skeleton Recording Sheet and learn how to use objects to fi nd out informati on about a person’s life and status. Children will write a postcard using Viking runes for their classmates to decipher.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to make their own Hammer of Thor pendant to take away. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History – see Secrets of the mummies to left and, “Pupils should be taught about…the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the ti me of Edward the Confessor (including) Viking raids and invasion”.

VICTORIAN VOYAGEPICKFORD’S HOUSE

Your class will be welcomed to the house by a costumed Victorian lady or gentleman. They will then adopt the role of prospecti ve applicants for a new servant post of the house and try on replica Victorian clothing. The class will be split into smaller groups to engage in washing day acti viti es and will use our handling collecti on to investi gate mysterious objects using our ‘Become a Museum Curator’ worksheet.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to make a peg doll to take away. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History - “Pupils should conti nue to develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of Briti sh, local and world history…they should note connecti ons, contrasts and trends over ti me and develop the appropriate use of historical terms.”

ESPIONAGE AND INTRIGUE: THE EARLY YEARS OF THE SILK MILLTHE SILK MILL

Derby’s Silk Mill is the site of the world’s fi rst powered factory, and is part of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site. Your class will fi nd out about the mill’s origins in the early 18th century – at the very beginning of the industrial revoluti on – and about the stories surrounding the fi rst owner, John Lombe, and his mysterious demise…

at the hands of an Italian woman! They will also fi nd out about the life cycle of the silk worm, and the process whereby its thread is obtained.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Pupils will have the opportunity to create their own twined key ring. Relevant to the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History. See Victorian voyage to above and “Signifi cant historical events people and places in their own locality” beginning from Key stage 1.

WW1: BERT AND AGATHAMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Inspired by actual postcards writt en by a soldier at the front to his family in Derby, this session explores the changing lives both of men and women during WW1, and the impact of the war upon the nati on. Using Museum artefacts and objects, Bert, a soldier, and Agatha, a nurse, bring their stories to life. Pupils will have the opportunity to handle original and replica objects.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Using postcards from our collecti on as inspirati on, each pupil will have the opportunity to create their own postcard to take away. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History - See Victorian voyage above and, “Pupils should be taught about a signifi cant turning point in Briti sh history, for example the fi rst railways or the Batt le of Britain”.

CHILDREN AT WARPICKFORD’S HOUSE

Your pupils will experience what it was like to shelter in the Pickford’s House cellar during a World War II air raid att ack. Our costumed ARP Warden will train your pupils to deal with gas att acks and incendiary bombs. There will also be the chance to explore the causes and eff ects of rati oning on people’s lives during WWII. Aft er WWII, Britain would never be the same again!

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Your pupils will have the opportunity to make a model of an Anderson Shelter to take away. Relevant to the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: History – see Victorian voyage and WW1: Bert and Agatha above.

JOSEPH WRIGHT AND THE ORRERYMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

This fun and interacti ve schools session uses Joseph Wright’s famous painti ng, ‘A philosopher giving a lecture on the orrery’, as a starti ng point to examine how an orrery – a mechanical representati on of the solar system – explains to us the relati ve positi ons of the planets around the sun, and of the moons around the planets. By creati ng a human orrery with the children

themselves, they can then explore space, distance and gravity, and then investi gate the phases of the moon. And other space mysteries!

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will make their own tellurian – a mini version of the orrery representi ng the sun, the Earth and the Moon. The session meets requirements of the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: Science – ‘Earth and space’, and has been developed by a real astrophysicist!

NOT JUST LOOKING AT ARTMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Pupils will be introduced to alternati ve ways of experiencing art through acti viti es which encourage acti ve parti cipati on, such as ‘performing’ artworks as a human orchestra. The acti viti es, in the renowned Joseph Wright gallery, are designed to enrich pupils’ interpretati ons of the works on display and recognise that an encounter with art is a multi -sensory experience.

OPTIONAL MAKE AND TAKE

Each pupil will have the opportunity to try their hand at portraiture. From the Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: Art and Design – “Pupils…should be able to think criti cally and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design…(and)…all pupils (are taught)…“about great arti sts, architects and designers in history”.

REMARKABLE ROCKS AND FANTASTIC FOSSILSMUSEUM & ART GALLERY

Pupils work with museum specialists to explore and understand the three types of rock, working scienti fi cally in examining appearance and physical properti es, and discovering the diff erences in hardness and permeability of rocks. They will learn about the rock cycle and how fossils have been created. They will fi nd and cast their own fossils. Fun and interacti ve! Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: Science – Rocks.

CLASSIFICATION – THAT’S THE NAME OF THE GAME!MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

One of the great ongoing scienti fi c challenges is the classifi cati on – and understanding – of living things. Two biologists and a zoologist have developed this session to help pupils apply some of the methods used to group and categorise animals, and look for the evidence of animal lifestyles and life cycles. Nati onal curriculum Key stage 2: Science – Living things and their habitats, and Evoluti on and inheritance.
