INTRODUCTION OF COMPUTERS

Computer is an electronic device which accepts the data, processes the data and gives the meaningful output.

TYPES OF COMPUTERS:

Based on Operating Principles computers are classified into three types. They are Digital computers, Analog computers and Hybrid computers.

A. Digital Computers

These are high speed programmable, electronic devices that perform mathematical calculations, compare values and store the results. They recognize data by counting discrete signals representing either a high (ON) or low (OFF) state of voltages. All numbers, alphabets and special symbols can be represented by 0's and 1's.

B. Analog Computers

Analog computers recognize data as a Continous measurement of physical properties. Their output is usually in the form of readings on dials or graphs. Voltage, pressure, speed and temperature are some physical properties that can be measured in this way.

C. Hybrid Computers

Computer falls into a category in between analog and digital. Because of the special design in processor and memory, some of the operations are performed digitally and some in analog.

CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS:

Based on size, Computers are classified as Micro Computer, Mini Computer, Mainframe computer and Super computers.

As the hardware evolved over the years, different classification schemes were used to classify the machines.

Micro computer:

The personal computers are generally micro computers built for personalized use, and are equipped with user-friendly, personal productivity software.

A work station is a powerful single user computer used for computing intensive work such as complex data analysis, graphic design, engineering applications etc.

Mini computer:

Minicomputers are introduced in the early nd 1960’s aannounced a new era in computing. They are relativelylow cost and small. Mini computers are well adapted for functions such as accounting, word processing, data base management, statistical packages for social sciences. and Numerical Computer Aided Design (CAD)Analysis etc.

Mainframe computers:

Mainframe Computers are very large computers in which all the units like processor or any other are hung into a single frame.

They are used for certain large computing applicationsor enormous data processing. They are typically linked to hundreds or even thousands of terminals for processing huge volumes of on-line transactions.

Super computers:

Super Computers are meant for specialized numeric computations, intensive Jobs like seismic dataprocessing, weather forecast, nuclear research, space research, defence applications etc. They are also used in banking, manufacturing and data mining operations.

SUMMARY

There are three types of computers, digital computers, analog computers and hybrid computers. The digital computers which can theoretically be used for any type of application are called general purpose digital computers. Analog computers recognize data as a continuos measurement of a physical property. Hybrid computer falls into a category in between analog and digital. The micro computers are personal computers are generally micro computers built for personalized use, and are equipped with user-friendly, personal productivity software. Mini computers are well adapted for functions such as accounting, word processing, data base management, statistical packages for social sciences. Mainframe Computers are used by large organizations' using very large data base operations. Super Computers are meant for specialized numeric computations, intensive Jobs like seismic data processing.
