Every week, R66 organises activities to allow our students to get to know each other and the city, enjoy the local culture, or just enjoy the good weather…With its f lat streets and good weather, Valencia is the perfect city to get around on bike. Located on the Costa Blanca, Valencia has beautiful countryside and a lot of water – the perfect conditions for adventure sports. Valencia also hosts many events, not only Las Fallas in March, but also “La Tomatina” on the last Wednesday in August, which is well worth a visit.

tell us a bit about yourself!I’m from Cantabria (the most beautiful region of Spain), but I’ve been living in Valencia for three years after travelling around Europe and the north of Spain.

how long have you been teaching, and what did you do before? Before Spanish, I’ve taught English, Italian, and Valencian to children, but I’ve also worked in a nursery, an old-people’s home, a circus, a thousand bars and restaurants, in supermarkets, as a pollster, a tour guide, and more.

what do you like about being a teacher?I really like teaching Spanish to foreign students because they’re always keen to learn. And I’m truly passionate about cultural interchange.

we’re sure you’ve had some funny moments in your classes…Well, one pupil tried to say that they had a very big kitchen (“cocina”) in their house, but said “cochina” which means pig. And another student was really worried when they realized that to pay in a bar you

should ask “¿Cuánto cuesta?” (“How much is it?”) and they’d been saying “¿Cuánto cobras?”, which means ¨How much do you charge for your ¨services¨?¨!!

Your vices, passions and manias? My vices: good white wine, music and my friends. Passions: travelling and writing. Manias: spelling and rudeness.

Jon, Spanish teacher since September 2006.

1. where do you usually go to have a coffee?2. where would you recommend having a picnic?3. what place in Valencia never ceases to amaze you?

ralph, learning Spanish (Scotland).

1. “Poquito a poco”, in Calle Hospital, very close to the Central Library.2. If I’ve got time and it’s not raining, next to the pools at the City of Arts: a very quiet and pretty place.3. I love the Cathedral. I’m not religious, but it’s a good place to think about others…

Marloes, learning Spanish (holland).1. Café Museu (Calle del Museo, El Carmen). A small terrace with great people.2. The Monforte gardens, between the Alameda and Blasco Ibáñez: there aren’t too many people and it

smells really good.3. Even with all the posh shops, the Mercado Colón (Calle Jorge Juan) is impressive.

Xiao Lei, learning Spanish (china).1. “La trovada”, in Plaza de los Pueros, behind the Serrano Towers.2. The Viveros gardens at night: yes, it’s forbidden, but if you could get in it would be a unique experience and very quiet.3. A night time walk from the Plaza Cisneros and the Museum of Medicine to the Serrano Towers. It’s a beautiful route.
