One of the benefits was for high school sweethearts who knew what they were getting into when they married, and are now matched in a rare way. The day Kristi (Nelson) Fabre married Ryan was the 14th anniversary of her first kidney transplant. After living successfully for 14 years with a kidney donated by her father, Kristi was in need of another transplant. Members of her family were tested to see who might match, but for various reasons, none of them were able to donate a kidney. Kristi already had a heart match with Ryan, but it was a surprise when he could be a kidney match, too. A few months later, he was in surgery, donating a kidney to his young bride. “Ryan was his own decision maker,” Kristi said. To help the young couple recover from substantial out-of-pocket expenses, the Dilworth Loco Ladies Lions coordinated a benefit. The cooperation between Lend A Hand, the Lions and community members resulted in a successful fundraising effort, allowing the young couple to survive financially and plan for their future. The fundraising resources Lend A Hand offers, the DMF matching funds and the experience of Lend A Hand director Jeana Peinovich make the program a huge asset for volunteer leaders. Lion Kris Johnson said Kristi’s benefit was personal for her. Her daughter is married to Kristi’s brother. Knowing the need, her Lions Club first thought about a raffle. After talking to Jeana, they decided to add a community dinner and silent auction. As another Lion said, “DMF is like a college course, Benefit 101.” Lion Carol Skabo echoes others when she says they will always be grateful for the caring and guidance they received from DMF Lend A Hand to successfully help families in their community. Both Kristi and Ryan are back at work, he farming and she at Sanford Health. They want to have children. Kidneys need to be in tip-top function for a transplant patient to have a child. Due to generous community support and a rare match, Kristi and Ryan are hopeful and excited about their future years together. Story by Katherine Tweed Dilworth Loco Ladies Lions Lend A Hand
